Mahomes, Kelce Lead Chiefs in Quest for Super Bowl History Against Eagles

Chiefs Aim for Historic Three-Peat in Super Bowl Showdown with Eagles

Mahomes, Kelce, and the Chiefs’ Quest for a Historic Three-Peat Faces Tough Test Against Eagles

Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs are chasing history—and perhaps a few of Taylor Swift’s records—as they pursue their third straight Super Bowl victory. But standing in their way are Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts, and the formidable Philadelphia Eagles.

The Chiefs (17-2) are set to face the Eagles (17-3) on Sunday in the Superdome, hoping to make history by becoming the first team to secure three consecutive Super Bowl wins. This matchup is a rematch of the 2023 Super Bowl, when Hurts nearly led the Eagles to victory but saw Mahomes rally the Chiefs to a 38-35 win with a clutch 27-yard field goal by Harrison Butker in the final seconds.

Chiefs’ Road to a Three-Peat

Mahomes and Kelce, who have become the faces of Kansas City’s dynasty, are looking to build on the team’s previous successes. Mahomes led the Chiefs to an overtime win against San Francisco in last year’s Super Bowl, cementing his legacy. Now, they’re gunning for the elusive three-peat, although Chiefs coach Andy Reid doesn’t often mention the idea of a three-peat.

“I think the only time I’ve heard him say it is when y’all ask him about it,” Mahomes said, adding that Reid stays focused on the task at hand—preparing for the Eagles.

Reid, who previously coached in Philadelphia, has already built a Super Bowl-winning dynasty in Kansas City with Mahomes, Kelce, and standout players like Chris Jones. Despite the potential to make history, Reid emphasizes staying focused on the upcoming game.

“We don’t talk about no three-peat,” Jones said. “Our main focus is making sure we’re prepared for the Eagles.”

Eagles’ Revenge and a New Challenge

The Eagles are determined to avenge their loss two years ago and are an even stronger team this time around. With MVP candidate Jalen Hurts at the helm and Saquon Barkley leading the backfield, the Eagles’ offense presents a formidable challenge for the Chiefs’ defense. Barkley rushed for 2,447 yards with seven touchdowns of 60+ yards this season, and Hurts is more motivated than ever after falling short in 2023.

“It lit a flame, lit a fire in me, and to have this opportunity again is exactly what you work for,” Hurts said of his previous Super Bowl loss.

The Eagles’ offense, bolstered by A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and a dominant offensive line, is one of the most potent in the league. They also boast the league’s No. 1-ranked defense, led by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. The defense has been significantly revamped since last year, with new starters like All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun, rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, and defensive stars like Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith.

The Chiefs’ Defense vs. Eagles’ Dynamic Offense

Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo knows that facing the Eagles’ top-ranked defense will be no easy task, but he believes in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion.

“We’re fortunate to have Steve Spagnuolo, but I tell you that Vic [Fangio] is one of those guys,” Reid said. “He’s been time-tested, and he has the trust of his players.”

If the Chiefs win, Reid and Mahomes will inch closer to matching the legacy of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, who won six Super Bowls together in New England. Mahomes is still four rings away from Brady’s all-time record of seven.

“I’m trying to be the greatest Patrick Mahomes that I can be,” Mahomes said. “To be the greatest, you have to be the greatest every single day.”

Kelce, Swift, and the Super Bowl Rings

For Kelce, a third Super Bowl win would give him his fourth ring, matching the number of Grammy Awards his pop star girlfriend, Taylor Swift, has won for Best Album. Kelce has 18 playoff wins to his name, while Swift has 14 Grammys.

“She’s up there being the superstar that she is and never taking no for an answer,” Kelce said. “I better match that energy for sure.”

As the Chiefs chase history and the Eagles seek redemption, this Super Bowl promises to be one of the most thrilling matchups yet.
