Biden Pardons Fauci, Milley, and Jan. 6 Investigators in Effort to Protect Against Potential Trump “Revenge”

In his final hours in office, President Joe Biden used his pardoning power to protect key individuals from potential retribution under the incoming Trump administration. Among those granted pardons were Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley, and members of the House committee that investigated the January 6 Capitol attack. The pardons were issued in an effort to shield these individuals from any potential “revenge” by former President Donald Trump and his supporters.

Trump’s Threat of Retaliation

Biden’s move comes in the wake of warnings from Donald Trump, who has previously mentioned creating an “enemies list” of people who have politically opposed him or worked to hold him accountable. This includes individuals who have challenged his baseless claims about the 2020 election and his involvement in the January 6th attack. Trump has already selected Cabinet nominees who have supported his election lies and pledged to take action against those involved in investigating his actions.

Dr. Anthony Fauci: Target of Trump’s Critics

Dr. Anthony Fauci, who played a pivotal role in leading the nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, became a frequent target of Trump’s ire. Fauci publicly contradicted Trump’s misleading statements about the virus and vaccine, angering many of Trump’s supporters. Those on the political right, in particular, blamed Fauci for mask mandates and other public health policies, despite the overwhelming public health crisis that resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of American lives.

Gen. Mark Milley: A Voice Against Trump’s Actions

Gen. Mark Milley, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also found himself at odds with Trump, especially after the events of January 6, 2021. Milley publicly condemned Trump’s actions surrounding the Capitol insurrection, referring to him as a fascist. He played a significant role in warning against Trump’s attempts to undermine democracy and democracy’s institutions during that turbulent period.

Pardons as a Shield for the Future

By issuing these pardons, President Biden aimed to protect these individuals from the potential fallout of a political climate increasingly hostile to those who challenge Trump’s influence. The pardons are viewed as both a protective measure and a statement of support for those who stood up to defend democratic values, public health, and accountability during one of the most challenging periods in recent U.S. history.
