Trump Meets Macron in First International Visit Since Reelection

PARIS, Dec 8 – President-elect Donald Trump marked his return to the global stage with a high-profile meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace, his first international trip since his reelection. The meeting, described by both leaders as a reaffirmation of strong ties, occurred amidst global uncertainty and France’s own political challenges.

Warm Welcome and Mutual Praise

Macron greeted Trump with a warm reception, reflecting on their past collaborations during Trump’s first term. “It’s a great honor for the French people to welcome you five years later,” Macron said, thanking Trump for his “solidarity” and swift action during his initial presidency.

Trump reciprocated the praise, emphasizing the shared successes between the U.S. and France in both defense and diplomacy. “We had a great relationship, and we accomplished a lot together,” Trump remarked. He praised the French people, calling them “spectacular, talented, and extremely energetic.”

Zelenskyy Joins the Discussion

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the meeting at approximately 11:34 a.m. Eastern time. Although Zelenskyy did not make a public statement, his presence underscored the critical international focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine and its broader implications.

Notre Dame Ceremony and Global Challenges

Trump’s visit coincided with the reopening ceremony for Notre Dame Cathedral, more than five years after a devastating fire severely damaged the iconic structure. Dignitaries from around the globe, including First Lady Jill Biden, attended the event.

In their discussions, Trump acknowledged the chaotic state of current world affairs, noting, “It certainly seems like the world is going a little crazy right now.” Macron’s government is also facing turbulence, following the resignation of Prime Minister Michel Barnier after a no-confidence vote. Despite political challenges, Macron reaffirmed his commitment to serve his full term until 2027.

Missed Meeting with Prince William

Trump was originally scheduled to meet Prince William, the Prince of Wales, before the Notre Dame ceremony. However, the meeting was postponed and ultimately took place later that evening at the U.K. residence in Paris. Trump commended the Prince, saying, “He’s doing a fantastic job,” before the two entered a private discussion.

Reaffirming U.S.-French Relations

The meeting underscored the enduring partnership between the United States and France, with both leaders expressing optimism about future collaborations. “We had a lot of success working together on defense and offense,” Trump said, hinting at continued cooperation amidst global challenges.
