NEW YORK, United States – Duncan Sheik, the singer-songwriter who became known worldwide for the 1996 hit “Barely Breathing” before building a second career as a Tony Award-winning musical-theater composer, died Sept. 17 in New York. He was 56.
Sheik’s death was confirmed by his family through his official Instagram account. His mother, Suzanne Sheik, told The New York Times that he died from organ failure. His family had said a day earlier that he was receiving medical care and was in critical but stable condition.
His death came just days before performances were scheduled to begin for his newest musical, “Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen,” an Off-Broadway production based on the manga by Moyoco Anno. Performances were scheduled to begin Sept. 25.
‘Barely Breathing’ made him a 1990s pop star
Sheik was born Nov. 18, 1969, in Montclair, New Jersey, and spent part of his childhood in South Carolina after his parents divorced. His grandmother, a Juilliard-trained musician, introduced him to piano. He later learned guitar and studied semiotics at Brown University.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1992, he pursued a career as a singer-songwriter.
His self-titled debut album arrived in 1996 and produced “Barely Breathing,” a song that became his signature recording. It reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Sheik a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. The song remained on the Hot 100 for 55 weeks.
The success made Sheik a recognizable figure in 1990s pop music, but his subsequent work increasingly moved away from conventional pop stardom.
He released albums including “Humming,” “Phantom Moon,” “Daylight,” “White Limousine,” “Whisper House” and “Claptrap,” while also developing an increasingly substantial body of theater work.
‘Spring Awakening’ changed the direction of his career
Sheik’s most consequential work in theater came through his collaboration with lyricist Steven Sater on “Spring Awakening.”
Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, the musical follows young people confronting sexuality, repression and the restrictions imposed by adults in 19th-century Germany. Sheik and Sater approached the material with a contemporary rock score rather than traditional Broadway musical conventions.
The production opened on Broadway in December 2006 after an Off-Broadway run.
At the 2007 Tony Awards, “Spring Awakening” won Best Musical, while Sheik won for Original Musical Score and Orchestrations. The American Theatre Wing’s official records list Sheik as the winner for both categories.
The musical won eight Tony Awards overall and helped establish performers including Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr.
Sheik later shared a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album for the original Broadway production.
The success gave him a lasting place in musical theater while he continued recording and performing outside Broadway.
He continued writing for stage and screen
Following “Spring Awakening,” Sheik worked on a series of theater projects.
His credits included “American Psycho,” “Alice by Heart,” “Because of Winn-Dixie,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Whisper House” and other productions. He also wrote music for film and television.
“American Psycho,” based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel, opened on Broadway in 2016 after premiering in London.
Sheik continued to release music alongside his theater work. His final studio album, “Claptrap,” was released in 2022.
His career consequently developed along two distinct but connected paths: a singer-songwriter career that began with a major 1990s pop hit and a theater career built around contemporary music and unconventional adaptations.
His final musical was preparing to open
Sheik was still working on new theater material at the time of his death.
“Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen,” with music and lyrics by Sheik and a book by Leah Nanako Winkler, is based on Moyoco Anno’s manga. Tony Award winner Rob Ashford was directing and choreographing the production, which was scheduled to begin performances Sept. 25 at the Night Egg at the Culture Club in New York.
A new production of “Spring Awakening” was also scheduled to return to New York later in the year.
That placed two of Sheik’s theatrical works on the city’s performance calendar at the time of his death.
Sheik’s family said he is survived by his parents, partner Nora Ariffin, daughter Ines and half-siblings Peter and Kacie.
His career left a body of work that moved between alternative pop, electronic music and contemporary musical theater, with “Barely Breathing” and “Spring Awakening” remaining the two works most closely associated with his public legacy.
