Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs in Southern California, according to authorities. The incident occurred Wednesday night near the singer’s home, and she was released early Thursday morning after being booked at a Ventura County jail.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers received a report shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday about a black BMW 430i driving at high speed and weaving through traffic on U.S. 101 near Newbury Park in Ventura County, close to the Los Angeles County line.
Authorities said Spears, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, exited the freeway and pulled over after officers located the car. Officers reported that she appeared impaired and conducted a series of field sobriety tests.
Spears was then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs. Officials said chemical test results remain pending and the investigation is ongoing.
Jail records show the singer was booked early Thursday morning and released at approximately 6 a.m.

A representative for Spears described the arrest as an “unfortunate incident.”
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” the representative said in a statement. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
