AUSTIN, Texas (Journos News) – A shooting at Buford’s, a popular bar in Austin’s entertainment district, left three people dead and 14 others injured early Sunday, authorities said. Police confronted the suspect at the scene, fatally shooting him, officials confirmed.
The incident shocked the city’s nightlife area, which draws large crowds on weekends. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said officers responded swiftly after reports of a “male shooting.” Upon arriving, they encountered an armed man and opened fire, killing him at the scene.
Victims and Emergency Response
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Chief Robert Luckritz said three victims died at the bar. Fourteen others were taken to local hospitals, and three remained in critical condition. “We received a call at 1:39 a.m., and within 57 seconds, the first paramedics and officers were on scene actively treating the patients,” Luckritz said.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the quick actions of first responders. “They definitely saved lives,” he said, emphasizing the importance of rapid intervention in preventing further harm.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or a motive. Police are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation. The area around Buford’s remained closed early Sunday while officers gathered evidence.
Broader Safety Concerns
The shooting adds to a growing list of firearm-related incidents in Texas and across the United States. City officials said they plan to increase patrols in busy nightlife areas to enhance public safety. They also urged anyone present at Buford’s or nearby during the shooting to contact the Austin Police Department with information that could aid the investigation.
