Australian Judge Attributes Melbourne Synagogue Arson to Mental Illness Rather Than Antisemitism

MELBOURNE, Australia (Journos News) – An Australian magistrate has ruled that a man who set fire to a Melbourne synagogue was driven by mental illness rather than antisemitic intent. Angelo Loras, 35, had pleaded guilty to arson and placing people at risk, though no worshippers were harmed. Authorities continue to monitor rising religiously motivated incidents across Australia.

Court Ruling on Arson AttackJournos News

Angelo Loras, 35, ignited a fire at the East Melbourne Synagogue on July 4 while about 20 worshippers were inside. The congregation was sharing a Shabbat meal at the time, and fortunately, no one was injured. Loras pleaded guilty to arson and recklessly placing people at risk of death.

Magistrate Malcolm Thomas ruled on Monday that Loras’s actions were not motivated by antisemitism. The judge found that Loras, who suffers from schizophrenia, had experienced a severe delusion after failing to take his prescribed medication. He sentenced Loras to four months in prison, a term shorter than the 138 days he had already served in custody.

Loras is required to continue medical treatment for schizophrenia for 20 months and perform unpaid work. Although eligible for immediate release, authorities emphasized the importance of ongoing psychiatric care.

Government Response and Context

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack immediately following the incident, describing it as “cowardly, an act of violence and antisemitism, and has no place in Australian society.” Reports of antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents have increased sharply across Australia since the 2023 Israel–Hamas conflict began, heightening government concern over religiously targeted attacks.

Earlier in recent years, Australian authorities attributed other synagogue attacks to foreign interference. Spy agencies have accused Iran’s Revolutionary Guards of orchestrating an arson attack on Melbourne’s Adass Israel Synagogue in December and targeting a Sydney kosher business two months prior. Both attacks caused extensive property damage, though Iran has denied involvement.

Investigation and Background of the Arsonist

Loras, formerly a Sydney-based forklift driver, had no prior criminal record. He told police he mistakenly believed the synagogue was a residential address when committing the arson. Magistrate Thomas advised the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation not to pursue a restitution order for the AUD 54,000 ($35,000) in damages due to Loras’s prolonged homelessness.

Authorities noted that Loras’s attack occurred amid heightened tensions, coinciding with two other suspected antisemitic incidents in Melbourne between July 4 and 6. Masked protesters targeted an Israeli-owned restaurant on July 5, cracking windows, flipping tables, and chanting slogans against the Israel Defense Forces. Police also investigated vandalism and arson at a related business, finding antisemitic references at the scene.

Public Safety and Ongoing Concerns

While the magistrate emphasized Loras’s mental health as the driving factor, Australian law enforcement continues to monitor antisemitic and Islamophobic activity nationwide. Officials stress the importance of community vigilance and mental health support to prevent similar incidents.

Experts highlight that mental illness can sometimes intersect with perceived social tensions, complicating law enforcement assessments. This case underscores the need to balance criminal accountability with psychiatric care and rehabilitation.
