Ukraine Strikes Deep Inside Russia, Destroys Dozens of Warplanes in Bold Drone Attack

In a stunning show of military precision, Ukrainian forces launched a drone attack deep inside Russian territory on Sunday, destroying 40 Russian warplanes across five airfields. The operation, which reportedly took over a year to plan, targeted a range of aircraft including strategic bombers and reconnaissance planes.

How the Attack Unfolded

According to Ukrainian officials, drones were transported in containers carried by trucks deep into Russia before being unleashed on several key airbases. The strike reportedly hit 41 aircraft, including Tupolev A-50 early warning planes and Tu-95 and Tu-22M long-range bombers — aircraft Moscow has used to launch missile attacks against Ukraine and coordinate air defenses.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the attack on Sunday but did not offer many details beyond acknowledging that five airfields were hit.

Zelenskyy’s Role and International Reactions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally oversaw the operation, underscoring the attack’s significance in Ukraine’s ongoing defense efforts.

“We are doing everything to protect our independence, our state and our people,” Zelenskyy said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the White House told Fox News that the Trump administration was not informed of the strike ahead of time, highlighting the sensitive nature of this cross-border operation.

Timing and Wider Context

The drone attack came just a day before Ukrainian and Russian officials were scheduled for a second round of ceasefire talks in Istanbul, Turkey — a reminder of the fragile and tense nature of the ongoing conflict.

The military action follows a string of explosions on bridges in Russia near the Ukraine border on Saturday night. While Ukraine has not claimed responsibility, Russian investigators reported two major incidents:

What This Means Moving Forward

The attack signals Ukraine’s growing ability to strike deep into Russian territory, targeting critical military assets far from the frontline. It also serves as a potent message ahead of diplomatic talks, showing Ukraine’s resolve and capability.

As ceasefire discussions loom, the impact of these bold military moves will be closely watched by the world, with hopes high for a peaceful resolution but uncertainty lingering.
