A nationwide recall has been issued for thousands of Crayola-branded magnetic building kits after U.S. safety regulators warned that loose internal magnets could pose a life-threatening hazard if swallowed. The action affects approximately 9,400 units sold in stores and online earlier this year.
The recall highlights longstanding concerns among consumer safety officials about high-powered magnets in children’s products. While no injuries have been reported, authorities say the potential consequences of ingestion are severe, prompting immediate removal of the affected kits from sale.
Consumer Product Safety Commission Issues Warning
The recall was announced Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which said internal magnets inside the building cubes can detach.
According to the agency, when high-powered magnets are swallowed, they can attract to one another or to other metal objects inside the body. This can lead to perforations, twisting or blockages in the intestines, blood poisoning, and in rare cases, death. The CPSC described the risk as potentially resulting in “serious injury or death.”
Magnet-related injuries have been a recurring safety issue in recent years, particularly among young children who may place small objects in their mouths. Medical experts have warned that ingestion cases can escalate quickly and often require emergency surgery.
Products and Sales Details
The recall covers CreateOn Crayola-branded pip-Cube magnetic building sets sold in two styles — Bold Colors and Glitter — and in 24-piece and 27-piece packs.
The affected products include:
Bold Colors, 24 Cubes — Model 1000199 (UPC 850067300199)
Bold Colors, 27 Cubes — Model 1000243 (UPC 850067300205)
Glitter Cubes, 24 Cubes — Model 1000205 (UPC 850067300205)
Glitter Cubes, 27 Cubes — Model 1000250 (UPC 850067300250)
Model and UPC information can be found on the bottom of the packaging.
The 24-cube sets were sold at Michaels stores nationwide and on Michaels.com, while the 27-cube versions were sold online through Amazon. All recalled units were available between May and July 2025.
The kits were manufactured in China and imported by CreateOn LLC, a company based in Wheeling, Illinois.
Three Incidents Reported, No Injuries
CreateOn confirmed that three incidents have been linked to the magnet issue. However, the company said no injuries have been reported.
In a statement posted on its website, CreateOn apologized for the inconvenience and said it is working to resolve the matter “quickly and transparently.” The company did not provide further details about the reported incidents.
The recall notice instructs consumers to stop using the magnetic building cubes immediately and to keep them away from children. Customers are advised to contact CreateOn to receive a replacement set. The company will provide a prepaid shipping label so consumers can return the recalled cubes.
Ongoing Concerns Over Magnet Safety
High-powered magnets have been subject to regulatory scrutiny for more than a decade. The CPSC has repeatedly warned about the dangers posed by small, strong magnets used in toys and novelty items. When more than one magnet is ingested, they can attract through the walls of the digestive tract, leading to serious internal damage.
In recent years, regulators have tightened standards for magnet strength and labeling requirements in children’s products. Safety officials continue to urge parents and caregivers to monitor young children closely around small magnetic objects.
Although the number of recalled units in this case is limited, authorities say prompt consumer response is essential to prevent potential injuries. The agency’s guidance emphasizes immediate action rather than continued use, even if no defect is visible.
Consumers seeking more information can consult the official recall notice issued by the CPSC or contact CreateOn directly for replacement instructions.
