A fatal shooting inside a Chicago hospital has intensified scrutiny over law enforcement custody procedures after a detained suspect opened fire on two officers, killing one and critically injuring another. According to reporting by the Associated Press, the incident unfolded during what was expected to be a routine medical observation, transforming a controlled environment into a lethal breach.

Authorities confirmed the suspect, who had been in police custody, was later apprehended after fleeing the scene. The officers were escorting the individual at the time of the attack, underscoring how quickly operational control can collapse even under direct supervision.

Custodial Control Fails at Point of Maximum Vulnerability

The shooting occurred at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, where the suspect had been transported for treatment. Officials said the individual had undergone standard intake procedures, including a security screening, before being continuously escorted by officers.

Despite those safeguards, the suspect managed to produce a firearm and open fire, striking both officers. One officer, a 38-year-old with a decade of service, was pronounced dead, while a second officer with more than two decades on the force remains in critical condition.

The breakdown raises immediate questions about how a weapon was accessed inside a secured medical setting, particularly after screening protocols were reportedly followed.

Rapid Escalation Forces Emergency Lockdown and Manhunt

Gunfire triggered an immediate lockdown of the hospital campus as law enforcement mobilized to contain the situation. Officials confirmed that no patients or hospital staff were injured during the incident, even as armed officers secured the facility and surrounding area.

The suspect fled the hospital shortly after the shooting, prompting a coordinated search before being taken into custody. A firearm was recovered, though authorities have not disclosed how it entered the facility or whether additional security lapses occurred.

The speed at which the situation escalated—from medical transport to active shooter response—has become a central focus for investigators examining procedural gaps.

Urban Security Protocols Face Renewed Pressure

Chicago officials described the incident as a “tragedy,” with Mayor Brandon Johnson acknowledging the strain placed on law enforcement personnel and announcing support services for officers affected by the shooting.

The event highlights a broader operational risk: detainee transfers into civilian environments such as hospitals, where security control is inherently shared and less rigid than in detention facilities. Even with escort protocols in place, such settings introduce unpredictable variables that can compromise officer safety.

Comparisons are likely to emerge with prior hospital-based shootings in the United States, reinforcing concerns that healthcare facilities—designed for accessibility—present unique challenges for armed security management.

Investigation Centers on Weapon Access and Procedural Gaps

Authorities have launched a full investigation into how the suspect obtained the weapon and whether existing safeguards were sufficient. Police leadership has indicated that details remain limited as the inquiry continues.

The outcome may influence future policy on detainee handling, including stricter screening, enhanced restraints, or revised escort protocols during medical transfers. The incident underscores a critical reality for urban policing: even tightly controlled situations can unravel when a single point of failure intersects with access to a weapon.

As the investigation unfolds, the shooting is expected to shape internal reviews across law enforcement agencies, particularly regarding how custody is maintained beyond traditional detention environments.

The case is now under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is examining whether the attack reflects a broader domestic security concern or a violent episode driven primarily by personal distress.

Warning Signs Surface Hours Before the Attack

Recordings obtained by Detroit television station WXYZ-TV reveal that Ghazali’s former spouse contacted police in Dearborn Heights shortly before the synagogue assault.

In the call, she expressed concern about his mental state, telling dispatchers that he appeared deeply distressed and emotionally unstable.

“I feel like he’s really upset,” she said in the call, according to the broadcast report.

She also warned officers that his condition appeared to be worsening, telling authorities that his “voice is not stable” and describing him as suicidal.

Police were dispatched to Ghazali’s residence, but officers found no one there.

At the time of the call, she indicated she did not know whether he possessed any weapons and said she had no indication he intended to target a religious institution.

Personal Loss and International Conflict Enter the Investigation

Investigators are also examining whether recent events overseas may have contributed to the suspect’s mental state.

According to the 911 call, Ghazali had recently lost relatives in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon earlier this month. A memorial service for those killed was reportedly held at the Islamic Institute of America.

The Israeli military later stated that one of the individuals killed in the strike, Ghazali’s brother Ibrahim, was a commander affiliated with Hezbollah.

Officials at the FBI’s Detroit field office declined to comment on that characterization or whether it is relevant to the synagogue attack investigation.

For investigators, the overlapping timeline of personal loss, emotional distress, and the violent incident has added complexity to determining the motive behind the attack.

Security Response Prevented Potential Mass Casualties

Authorities say Ghazali waited outside the synagogue complex in his vehicle for approximately two hours before carrying out the attack.

He eventually drove the truck into the building housing the synagogue and its early childhood learning center, where numerous children were present.

A security guard stationed at the site exchanged gunfire with the suspect as the vehicle came to a stop. Ghazali died inside the vehicle, which subsequently caught fire.

Despite the scale of the incident and the presence of children in the building, no one inside the facility was injured.

The confrontation has drawn attention to the role of private security at religious institutions, which in recent years have increased protective measures amid rising concerns over targeted violence.

Investigators Weigh Personal Breakdown Against Broader Security Concerns

While the attack caused limited physical damage and no casualties, it has intensified discussion among law enforcement officials about how personal crises can escalate into violent incidents involving sensitive targets.

For federal investigators, the key question now is whether the event represents an isolated act tied primarily to Ghazali’s personal circumstances or reflects wider tensions connected to global conflicts that can reverberate within local communities.

Officials have so far indicated that the investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to review communications, personal history, and the timeline leading up to the attack.

The case underscores a broader challenge facing domestic security agencies: distinguishing between isolated psychological crises and incidents that may signal wider ideological or geopolitical influences.

A violent vehicle assault at a major Michigan synagogue has intensified security concerns among U.S. Jewish communities after federal investigators said the incident appears to have deliberately targeted a religious institution.

According to reporting by The Associated Press, an attacker armed with a rifle rammed a vehicle into Temple Israel on Thursday before being fatally shot by security personnel responding to the breach.

Federal authorities say the incident is now being investigated as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community, raising new questions about security vulnerabilities at religious institutions across the United States.

Threat Environment Intensifies Around Jewish Institutions

The attack unfolded at one of the largest Reform synagogues in the country, located in West Bloomfield Township, a suburb outside Detroit that is home to a significant Jewish population.

Jennifer Runyan said federal investigators believe the assault was directed specifically at the Jewish community.

“This was a targeted act of violence,” Runyan told reporters, adding that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not yet determined what motivated the suspect.

Local officials said the attacker drove the vehicle into the synagogue building before security personnel opened fire to stop the threat.

Security Response Prevents Mass Casualties

Officials say quick action by the synagogue’s security team likely prevented a far more serious outcome.

According to Mike Bouchard, the vehicle crashed through a hallway inside the synagogue complex and caught fire shortly afterward.

The building contained approximately 140 children enrolled in the synagogue’s early childhood center at the time of the attack, along with more than 30 staff members.

Despite the scale of the incident, none of the children or staff were physically injured.

A synagogue security officer was struck by the vehicle and briefly knocked unconscious, though authorities said the injuries were not life-threatening.

More than 30 responding law-enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation following the fire triggered by the crash.

Preparedness Measures Tested in Real Time

Inside the synagogue, staff moved quickly to implement emergency procedures.

Cassi Cohen said she heard a loud crash near the hallway where the vehicle entered the building.

Recognizing the potential threat, she and several staff members immediately secured themselves inside an office.

Temple Israel officials said routine active-shooter training helped staff respond quickly and initiate lockdown procedures designed to protect children and employees during emergencies.

Rabbi Arianna Gordon later praised teachers, security staff and emergency responders for ensuring that children were safely evacuated and reunited with their families.

Regional Security Concerns Grow

The incident comes at a time when Jewish institutions worldwide have increased security following the outbreak of the Israel–Iran war.

That conflict began after U.S. and Israeli forces launched missile strikes on Iranian targets on Feb. 28, triggering heightened tensions across the Middle East and raising concerns among Western security agencies about potential retaliatory attacks.

U.S. law-enforcement agencies have recently warned about possible threats to Jewish and government targets, including alerts about suspected Iranian-linked plots and extremist activity inspired by militant groups.

Community on Edge After Near Miss

Parents rushed to the synagogue shortly after authorities declared the building safe.

Some families reunited at a nearby Jewish community center while emergency crews continued clearing smoke from the synagogue complex.

Allison Jacobs said she first received a message from her daughter’s teacher confirming that the children were safe before she even knew what had happened.

“You never think this is actually going to happen to you,” she told the AP.

Community leaders acknowledged that the attack has intensified existing fears.

Steven Ingber said the organization has spent years preparing institutions for potential attacks — a reality that many hoped would never materialize.

Memories of Past Attacks Resurface

The attack also revived painful memories of previous violence targeting religious institutions in the United States.

Gretchen Whitmer said the incident was deeply troubling and emphasized that Jewish residents should be able to worship safely.

It follows another deadly attack at a Michigan house of worship last year when a gunman killed four people at a church north of Detroit before setting the building on fire.

Nationally, Jewish leaders also referenced the legacy of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history.

Jeffrey Myers, who survived that massacre, said the Michigan incident underscores the ongoing consequences of extremist violence.

Security Vigilance Likely to Intensify

Temple Israel, which has roughly 12,000 members, remains one of the largest Reform Jewish congregations in North America.

Following the attack, Jewish organizations across the Detroit region briefly placed institutions under precautionary lockdown while authorities assessed potential risks.

Investigators continue to analyze the suspect’s background and possible motives as part of the federal probe.

For Jewish communities across the United States, the attack serves as a reminder that the security landscape around houses of worship remains volatile — and that vigilance remains a permanent requirement.

AUSTIN, Texas (Journos News) – A shooting at Buford’s, a popular bar in Austin’s entertainment district, left three people dead and 14 others injured early Sunday, authorities said. Police confronted the suspect at the scene, fatally shooting him, officials confirmed.

The incident shocked the city’s nightlife area, which draws large crowds on weekends. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said officers responded swiftly after reports of a “male shooting.” Upon arriving, they encountered an armed man and opened fire, killing him at the scene.

Victims and Emergency Response

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Chief Robert Luckritz said three victims died at the bar. Fourteen others were taken to local hospitals, and three remained in critical condition. “We received a call at 1:39 a.m., and within 57 seconds, the first paramedics and officers were on scene actively treating the patients,” Luckritz said.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the quick actions of first responders. “They definitely saved lives,” he said, emphasizing the importance of rapid intervention in preventing further harm.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or a motive. Police are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation. The area around Buford’s remained closed early Sunday while officers gathered evidence.

Broader Safety Concerns

The shooting adds to a growing list of firearm-related incidents in Texas and across the United States. City officials said they plan to increase patrols in busy nightlife areas to enhance public safety. They also urged anyone present at Buford’s or nearby during the shooting to contact the Austin Police Department with information that could aid the investigation.

WASHINGTON (Journos News) – An armed man was shot and killed after entering the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago early Sunday, according to the U.S. Secret Service. President Donald Trump was in Washington at the time of the breach. Federal and local authorities are investigating the circumstances and possible motive.

Palm Beach, Florida — An armed man was shot and killed by law enforcement after driving into the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago early Sunday morning, authorities said. The Secret Service confirmed the breach occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m., triggering an immediate response from federal agents and local deputies.

President Donald Trump, who frequently spends weekends at his Palm Beach resort, was at the White House when the incident unfolded. Officials said there was no immediate threat to the president.

The episode adds to a series of security incidents in recent years involving high-profile political figures, underscoring the persistent risks faced by federal protective agencies. Investigators are continuing to assess the circumstances surrounding the breach.

The breach and response

According to the U.S. Secret Service, the man entered the north gate of Mar-a-Lago as another vehicle was exiting the property. He was confronted by two Secret Service agents and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw told reporters the individual was carrying a gas can and a shotgun. He was ordered to drop the items. Authorities said he put down the gas can but raised the shotgun into a firing position. The agents and deputy then opened fire, killing him at the scene.

The man was later identified by the FBI as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of North Carolina. Officials said his family had reported him missing earlier Sunday. Authorities believe he purchased the shotgun while traveling south; a box for the weapon was recovered from his vehicle.

Investigators have not determined a motive. Sheriff Bradshaw said there was no immediate indication that Martin had prior contact with law enforcement.

The FBI has urged residents in the vicinity of Mar-a-Lago to review home security footage that could assist the investigation. In a statement posted on X, FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau would dedicate “all necessary resources” to determining what led to the incident.

Family reaction in North Carolina

In Cameron, North Carolina, vehicles blocked access Sunday afternoon to a residence listed in public records as associated with Martin. A relative who spoke to reporters described him as quiet and not inclined toward firearms.

Braeden Fields, identified as Martin’s cousin, expressed disbelief at the events. He said Martin worked at a local golf course and often donated part of his paycheck to charity. Fields described his cousin as someone who avoided political discussions, even though other family members were strong supporters of Trump.

Law enforcement officials said they are working to compile a psychological profile as part of their inquiry. No further details about Martin’s recent movements or mental state have been released.

Previous threats and heightened security

Sunday’s breach occurred amid an already elevated security environment surrounding Trump. During the 2024 presidential campaign, he survived two assassination attempts.

In one case, a man later identified as Ryan Routh attempted to target Trump while he was playing golf at a club in West Palm Beach. A Secret Service agent intervened before Trump came into view, prompting an exchange that led to Routh’s arrest. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

Trump was also targeted at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a gunman fired multiple shots before being killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper. One rally attendee was killed in that attack.

Federal officials have consistently cited those incidents as examples of the challenges facing protective details assigned to current and former presidents.

Political backdrop

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a social media post that the Secret Service acted “quickly and decisively” in response to the threat. She also referenced the partial government shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security, which began Feb. 14 following a dispute in Congress over immigration policy.

The Secret Service, which operates under the Department of Homeland Security, is among the agencies continuing essential operations during the funding lapse, though many employees are working without pay.

The White House directed further inquiries about Sunday’s shooting to the Secret Service and the FBI. Trump and his wife posted unrelated messages on social media after the incident.

Broader climate of political violence

The Mar-a-Lago breach comes against a backdrop of several high-profile acts of politically motivated violence in the past year, including attacks on elected officials and activists across the political spectrum. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly warned of an environment in which threats against public officials have become more frequent and more public.

Five days prior to the Mar-a-Lago incident, authorities arrested a Georgia man armed with a shotgun near the west side of the U.S. Capitol. Trump is scheduled to deliver his State of the Union address there on Tuesday.

Officials emphasized that the investigation into Sunday’s breach remains active. Authorities have not indicated whether the incident was politically motivated or whether the suspect intended to target anyone specifically inside the property.

For now, federal agents are focused on reconstructing the man’s travel, communications and actions in the hours before he entered the resort’s secured perimeter.

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (JN) – A shooting at a youth hockey game in Rhode Island has left three people dead, including the suspected gunman, and three others in critical condition, according to local authorities. The violence unfolded Monday afternoon inside a community arena in Pawtucket, abruptly turning a family sporting event into a scene of chaos.

Police say the suspected shooter died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after bystanders intervened. Investigators are working to determine the sequence of events and confirm the circumstances surrounding what officials described as a targeted incident.

The tragedy has once again raised concerns about gun violence in public spaces in the United States, particularly at venues where families gather. For Pawtucket, a small city just north of Providence, the shooting marks another painful chapter in a state still recovering from a separate high-profile attack earlier this year.

Rhode Island youth hockey shooting under investigation

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves told reporters that the shooting occurred at Dennis M. Lynch Arena, where families had gathered to watch a youth hockey game. The suspected gunman was attending the game to see a family member play.

Goncalves identified the shooter as Robert Dorgan, born in 1969, who also went by the name Roberta Esposito. She said two other adults were killed in the attack, though authorities have not publicly released the victims’ identities pending notification of relatives.

“It appears that this was a targeted event, that it may be a family dispute,” Goncalves said, cautioning that the investigation remains ongoing. She noted that one individual at the scene attempted to subdue the shooter, helping to bring the incident to a quicker end.

Three additional people were hospitalized in critical condition as of Monday night. Police did not provide details on their identities or ages.

Investigators have interviewed numerous witnesses who were inside the arena and are reviewing video footage from the game. Unverified clips circulating on social media appear to show players dropping to the ice and spectators scrambling for exits after the sound of gunfire.

Outside the arena, families embraced and comforted one another. High school players, some still in uniform, boarded buses as officials secured the area.

Community shaken in Pawtucket

Don Grebien, the mayor of Pawtucket, described the attack as deeply distressing for a close-knit community.

“These are high school kids,” Grebien said. “They were doing an event, they were playing with their families watching, a fun time, and it turned into this.”

Pawtucket, a city of just under 80,000 residents, sits along the Massachusetts border a few miles north of Providence. Long known as the home of toy manufacturer Hasbro’s headquarters, the city has typically been associated with youth sports and community gatherings rather than large-scale violence.

Officials emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Recent violence in Rhode Island

The shooting comes less than two months after a separate tragedy in the state. In that case, a gunman killed two students and wounded nine others at Brown University before fatally shooting a professor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Authorities later found the suspect, Claudio Neves Valente, 48, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a storage facility in New Hampshire.

Mayor Grebien noted that the two incidents are not connected but acknowledged the emotional toll on residents.

“The fortunate thing is that the two incidents are not related, but it is very tragic,” he said.

While Rhode Island has historically recorded lower levels of gun violence than many larger states, incidents in schools and public venues have intensified scrutiny of security measures and crisis response planning across the region.

Ongoing investigation

Police said they are continuing to collect evidence and interview witnesses to clarify what led to the confrontation. Authorities have not disclosed whether the shooter had a criminal history or how the firearm was obtained.

Chief Goncalves said the priority is supporting victims and their families while ensuring a thorough investigation. Further updates are expected as officials confirm details.

For a community accustomed to cheering from the stands, Monday’s events have left lingering shock. What began as a routine youth hockey game ended in loss, underscoring how quickly violence can intrude into everyday life.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (JN) – An 18-year-old woman identified by police as the suspect in a school shooting in western Canada had previously come to the attention of officers during mental health checks at her home. Authorities released the details a day after the attack that left eight people dead and more than 25 injured in a remote part of British Columbia.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said Jesse Van Rootselaar died from an apparent self-inflicted wound after the shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, a small campus in a mountain town near the Alberta border.

Investigators believe the violence began at her family home before she went to the nearby school. Police are still working to establish why the attack happened and how events unfolded.

Violence began at family home before moving to school

RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said Van Rootselaar first killed her 39-year-old mother and her 11-year-old stepbrother at their home. A young relative ran to a neighbor for help, and the neighbor called police. Officers later found the two bodies inside the house.

Soon after, the suspect went to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Police believe most of the shooting took place in the library and a stairwell. One victim lay in the stairwell, while others were in the library area, McDonald said.

He said the suspect had no known connection to the victims at the school. Investigators have not found any evidence that she targeted specific people.

Officers recovered a long gun and a modified handgun at the scene. Police reached the school within two minutes of the first emergency call and faced gunfire as they approached, McDonald added.

Eight dead and more than 25 injured

Police first reported nine deaths but later corrected the number to eight. McDonald said the mistake happened after a critically injured person was airlifted to a medical center and mistakenly listed as deceased.

The victims included a 39-year-old teacher and five students between the ages of 12 and 13. More than 25 people suffered injuries.

According to provincial records, the school serves about 175 students in grades 7 to 12.

History of mental health-related police visits

McDonald said officers had visited the suspect’s home in the past for mental health-related concerns. He did not give further details about those visits.

Investigators have not yet identified a motive for the attack.

Shock in a small and close-knit town

Tumbler Ridge has about 2,700 residents and sits more than 1,000 kilometers northeast of Vancouver. The town lies in the Canadian Rockies and functions as a tight community where many people know one another.

Mayor Darryl Krakowka said the loss hit the town hard.

“I broke down,” Krakowka said. “I have lived here for 18 years. I probably know every one of the victims.”

Police vehicles surrounded the school as officers secured the area. A helicopter circled overhead. Video footage showed students leaving the building with their hands raised.

Flowers, stuffed toys, and handwritten notes began to appear near the school grounds as residents gathered at a nearby community center for support.

Witness accounts from inside and outside the school

Shelley Quist said her neighbor lost a 12-year-old child in the attack. She described hearing the boy’s mother crying in the street and asking for her son.

Quist said her 17-year-old son, Darian, was inside the school when the shooting began. He remained on lockdown for more than two hours. He had been in the library shortly before the attack, she said.

Darian said he understood the seriousness of the situation when the principal ordered doors to be closed. Students pushed desks against classroom doors while he received messages from others inside the school.

Quist was working at the nearby hospital at the time. She said she wanted to run to the school but a coworker stopped her. She later reached her son by phone and learned he was safe.

National response and mourning

Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke about the tragedy as he arrived in Parliament. He said Canadians were mourning alongside the people of Tumbler Ridge.

“Parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers in Tumbler Ridge will wake up without someone they love. The nation mourns with you, and Canada stands by you,” Carney said.

The government ordered flags at federal buildings to fly at half-staff for seven days. Carney also canceled a planned trip to Europe.

British Columbia Premier David Eby said the scale of what happened would take time to process. He described the town as an “incredibly strong community.”

Rare but devastating in Canada

School shootings are uncommon in Canada, where gun-control laws are stricter than in many countries. The federal government expanded its ban on firearms it classifies as assault-style weapons after previous mass shootings.

This attack marks the deadliest episode of violence in Canada since 2020, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people and set fires that left nine others dead.

Local authorities closed both the high school and the elementary school for the rest of the week as residents grieve and police continue their work.

The Rev. George Rowe, who once taught at the high school and whose children studied there, said the building would never feel the same.

“To walk through the corridors of that school will never be the same again,” he said.

Flags at government buildings will be flown at half-staff for seven days. Carney also canceled a planned trip to Europe for the Munich Security Conference.

British Columbia Premier David Eby said the full impact of the events would take time to process but described the town as an “incredibly strong community.”

Rare but devastating in Canada

School shootings are rare in Canada, which has some of the world’s stricter gun-control laws. The federal government has introduced additional measures in recent years, including an expanded ban on firearms it classifies as assault-style weapons, following previous mass shootings.

The attack is the deadliest in Canada since 2020, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people and set fires that left another nine dead.

Local schools, including the high school and an elementary school, will remain closed for the rest of the week as the community grieves and authorities continue their investigation.

The Rev. George Rowe, who once taught at the high school and whose children attended the school, said walking its halls would never feel the same.

“To walk through the corridors of that school will never be the same again,” he said.
