Mystery Illness in Congo Kills Over 50 People Within Hours

A mystery illness in northwestern Congo has rapidly claimed the lives of more than 50 people in just a few weeks. The disease, first detected in three children who ate a bat, causes fever, vomiting, and internal bleeding—leading to death within 48 hours in most cases.

Health experts are deeply concerned as common deadly viruses, such as Ebola, Marburg, and yellow fever, have been ruled out.

Rapid Spread and Deadly Symptoms

The outbreak, which began on January 21, 2024, has led to 419 reported cases and 53 deaths so far.

Symptoms include:
✔ High fever
✔ Severe vomiting
✔ Internal bleeding

“The short time between the first symptoms and death is extremely alarming,” said Dr. Serge Ngalebato, medical director of Bikoro Hospital, a regional monitoring center.

Possible Origin: Disease Jumping from Animals to Humans

The outbreak started in Boloko village, where three children died within 48 hours after consuming a bat. This has raised concerns about zoonotic diseases—illnesses that jump from animals to humans.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that animal-to-human disease outbreaks in Africa have surged by 60% in the last decade, largely due to the consumption of wild animals.

Spread to a Second Village & Ongoing Investigations

On February 9, 2024, the disease appeared in Bomate village, sparking further concern. Thirteen samples from infected individuals were sent to the National Institute for Biomedical Research in Kinshasa for testing.

✅ Tests ruled out Ebola, Marburg, dengue, and yellow fever.
⚠ Some patients tested positive for malaria, but it remains unclear if malaria is the sole cause.

In 2023, another mystery flu-like illness in Congo killed dozens of people before being identified as malaria.

What’s Next?

Health experts are still searching for the cause of the illness and possible containment measures. The rapid death rate and unknown origin make urgent investigation critical.

The WHO and Congo’s health authorities continue to monitor the outbreak, urging caution in consuming wild animals and taking necessary precautions to prevent further spread.

Key concerns:

  • The rapid progression of symptoms
  • The high fatality rate
  • The potential for further outbreaks

Stay tuned for updates as researchers work to uncover the true nature of this deadly illness.
