Sweden School Shooting: Five Injured, Including Suspected Gunman

At least five people have been shot inside a school in Örebro, central Sweden, with the suspected perpetrator among the injured, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Ongoing Police Operation

Authorities are actively responding to what they describe as a “suspected serious crime of violence” at the Risbergska School for Adults. The campus, which also houses other schools, including those for children, remains under lockdown.

The shooting took place around 12:30 p.m. local time (6:30 a.m. ET), according to Roberto Eid Forest, head of the Örebro police district.

Victims and Injuries

According to Jonas Claesson, regional healthcare director, at least one person is seriously wounded. Five individuals have been transported to Örebro University Hospital, with four undergoing surgery. Two of them are now in stable condition.

Suspect and Police Response

The suspected shooter, identified as a man, is among the injured, police confirmed.

CNN affiliate Expressen reported that a gunfire exchange took place between the police and the suspect, though no officers were harmed. The total number of injured individuals remains unclear.

Public Safety Warning

Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the area, emphasizing that the danger is not over. Nearby schools have begun evacuating students as a precaution.

Sweden’s Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation and is in direct contact with the police.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses described scenes of terror and chaos inside the school.

“We heard three bangs and loud screams,” said Andreas Sundling, 28, who sheltered in a classroom. “Now we’re sitting here waiting to be evacuated. We’ve been told to stay put.”

School Profile

The Risbergska School provides primary and upper secondary education for adults, including immigrants and vocational training programs.

Developing Story

Authorities continue to assess the situation, and updates are expected as investigations proceed.
