Trump Congratulates Mike Johnson After Tight House Speaker Vote

On Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to reelect Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) as Speaker, following a tense and closely contested vote. Despite early opposition from several Republicans, which led to President-elect Donald Trump’s involvement in the discussions, Johnson emerged victorious.

The final tally was 218 votes for Johnson and 215 votes against him. While Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) voted against Johnson, eight other Republicans either voted against him or withheld their support in the initial roll call. However, Johnson’s support shifted as the vote remained open for negotiation.

The Tense Vote

The first ballot left Johnson in a precarious position, as he could only afford one Republican defection. All Democrats supported Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), putting Johnson’s chances of securing the speakership at risk.

But Johnson took the opportunity to engage in private discussions with holdout Republicans. By the time the vote was concluded, all but Massie had switched their votes in favor of Johnson.

Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) and Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas) initially opposed Johnson but later joined the support. Several Republicans, including Reps. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), Michael Cloud (R-Texas), Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.), Andy Harris (R-Md.), and Chip Roy (R-Texas), either withheld their votes or abstained from voting altogether in the first round.

Trump’s Role in the Outcome

While the specific details remain unclear, Trump played a role in influencing the vote. Reports suggest he spoke with Norman and Self before they changed their stance to support Johnson. Earlier in the week, Trump endorsed Johnson, calling him “the one who can win right now.”

After the vote, Trump took to Truth Social to congratulate Johnson, saying, “Congratulations to Speaker Mike Johnson for receiving an unprecedented Vote of Confidence in Congress. The People of America have waited four years for Common Sense, Strength, and Leadership. They’ll get it now, and America will be greater than ever before!”

Key Background

The vote for Speaker took place on the first day of the 119th Congress. Though the election of a new speaker has typically been a formality, it had recently become more contentious. In 2023, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) faced 15 rounds of voting before securing the position. Later that year, McCarthy was ousted, leading to Johnson’s eventual rise to the role.

In addition to Trump’s endorsement, Johnson also received support from Tesla CEO and Trump ally, Elon Musk.

With the election of Mike Johnson as Speaker, the House has signaled a shift in leadership and direction, promising a new chapter in the 119th Congress.
