New Zealander Triumphs at Spanish Scrabble Championship Without Speaking Spanish

A New Zealand man, Nigel Richards, has stunned the Scrabble world by clinching victory at the Spanish World Scrabble Championships in Granada, Spain, despite not speaking the language. Richards, widely celebrated as a Scrabble prodigy, continues to amaze with his uncanny ability to excel in foreign-language competitions.

A Remarkable Feat

Richards’ achievement in Spain saw him outplaying 145 top competitors from countries like Argentina, Venezuela, Spain, and Colombia. Over the course of the tournament, he won an astounding 22 consecutive matches, earning praise from the Federación Internacional de Léxico en Español, which highlighted his dominance on Instagram. His victory left his closest rival, Benjamín Olaizola, in awe.

“This is an incredible humiliation,” said Olaizola, the tournament’s runner-up, during an interview with Spanish radio network La Cadena SER. He described Richards as a “gifted man” with “very specific capabilities.”

The “Tiger Woods of Scrabble”

Nicknamed the “Tiger Woods of Scrabble,” Richards has built an unparalleled legacy in the Scrabble world. With nearly 200 tournament wins and multiple world titles under his belt, he is ranked No. 1 by the World English-language Scrabble Player’s Association (WESPA).

Richards first made international headlines in 2015 when he won the French-language Scrabble championship. At the time, he reportedly knew little more than basic phrases like “Bonjour.” Remarkably, he spent just nine weeks memorizing the French Scrabble dictionary, which contains nearly 400,000 words. His unique memorization technique, described by his friend Liz Fagerlund, allows him to absorb large amounts of information with astonishing speed.

“It’s most likely that he’s wired differently,” Fagerlund told CNN. “He doesn’t even study the pages word by word. He can look at a page full of words and absorb them all.”

A Humble Beginning

Richards’ journey in Scrabble began in 1996 when he joined the Christchurch Scrabble Club in New Zealand. According to Fagerlund, he started playing Scrabble with his mother after she grew tired of losing to him at card games. Ironically, Richards was not particularly strong in English during his school years.

“He came to the club and was very soon beating everyone there,” Fagerlund said.

The Enigmatic Champion

Known for his reclusive nature, Richards rarely gives interviews. He lives a simple life, enjoying biking and abstaining from smoking, drinking, or even watching TV or listening to the radio. His ability to strategize and adapt is legendary, as Olaizola noted during the Spanish tournament.

“He had a hand that was the most obvious one, the one that a computer would give to you, and he didn’t use it,” Olaizola said, referring to Richards’ ability to surprise his opponents with unexpected moves.

A Legacy Beyond Words

Nigel Richards’ latest triumph cements his status as one of the greatest Scrabble players in history. His exceptional talents and unconventional approach continue to inspire awe, proving that mastery knows no linguistic boundaries.
