Ukraine’s Zelenskyy Aims for Peace Talks to Resolve Conflict in 2024

Zelenskyy Aims for Diplomatic End to War with Russia by Next Year

KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his hope on Saturday, November 16, to bring an end to the ongoing war with Russia through diplomatic negotiations next year. His remarks came just a day after predicting that the conflict could conclude sooner under the leadership of United States President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to take office next year.

“For our part, we must do everything we can to ensure that this war ends next year. We have to end it by diplomatic means,” Zelenskyy stated during an interview with Ukrainian radio. “And this, I think, is very important.”

Diplomatic Uncertainties and Challenges

Despite Zelenskyy’s optimism, meaningful peace talks between Ukraine and Russia have not materialized. The potential influence of a Trump presidency on the conflict adds another layer of complexity. Trump has frequently claimed he would end the war swiftly but has not detailed how this would be achieved.

Zelenskyy underscored the challenges Ukraine faces:
“You are at war with a state that does not value its people, that has a lot of equipment, and does not care how many people die,” he said.

Russian Stance on Negotiations

Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to demand Ukraine’s surrender of territories currently under Moscow’s control as a precondition for peace talks. Zelenskyy has firmly rejected these terms.

The Kremlin reiterated its stance during a phone call between Putin and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday, with Putin insisting on his territorial demands.

War Progress and G7 Support

Russia has made incremental advances in eastern Ukraine over the summer, nearing key locations such as Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. However, Zelenskyy noted that Russian forces are facing heavy losses, and their offensive has “slowed down” in several areas.

On Saturday, the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations released a statement marking 1,000 days since the beginning of the Russian invasion. The G7 reiterated its support for Ukraine, declaring that Russia remains the sole obstacle to achieving a fair and lasting peace.

“Russia remains the only obstacle to a just and durable peace,” the G7 stated, with Italy, the current chair of the group, reaffirming the commitment to stand united with Ukraine.

As the conflict endures, the path toward resolution remains fraught with challenges, but Ukraine’s leadership emphasizes the importance of diplomatic efforts to secure peace and stability.
