Tom Skerritt, the Emmy-winning actor known for Picket Fences, Alien and Top Gun, died on October 21, 2026. He was 93. His family said he died of natural causes.

In a statement, his family remembered him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom and generosity. They also highlighted his commitment to creativity, storytelling, veterans and the natural world.

Skerritt worked for more than six decades, moving between film, television and theater. He played military officers, fathers, police officers and complicated authority figures. His roles often brought a steady presence to stories that ranged from science fiction to family drama.

From Detroit to Hollywood

Born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 25, 1933, Skerritt served in the U.S. Air Force before pursuing a career in acting. He made his film debut in War Hunt in 1962, a war drama that also featured Robert Redford.

Early work in television helped him build a career that lasted well beyond a single genre. In Robert Altman’s MASH* (1970), he played Dr. Duke Forrest, one of the surgeons in the dark military comedy. The role brought him wider attention and led to further work in film.

Rather than remain tied to one kind of character, Skerritt took roles in dramas, comedies, thrillers and major studio productions. His career would span more than 60 years.

A Captain in Alien, an Instructor in Top Gun

In Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), Skerritt played Captain Dallas, the commander of the commercial spacecraft Nostromo. The crew’s mission turns into a fight for survival after they encounter a deadly alien creature.

Dallas was responsible for the ship and its crew, placing Skerritt at the center of the film’s growing danger. His performance helped establish the authority and tension that shaped the story.

Seven years later, he appeared in Top Gun (1986) as Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf, a flight instructor who helps train the naval aviators played by Tom Cruise and his fellow cast members. The part again drew on Skerritt’s ability to portray an experienced leader, but in a very different setting.

The two films reached different audiences, yet both remain among the best-known titles in his career.

The Human Drama of The Turning Point and Steel Magnolias

Skerritt also made a mark in films built around relationships and family life.

In The Turning Point (1977), he played Wayne Rodgers, the husband of a former ballerina played by Shirley MacLaine. The film explores the choices and sacrifices that shape a life in dance. Skerritt’s role gave the story a perspective beyond the world of the performers.

In Steel Magnolias (1989), he played Drum Eatenton, the husband of M’Lynn, portrayed by Sally Field. Set in a close-knit Southern community, the film follows women whose friendships help them face family struggles, illness and loss.

These roles showed another side of Skerritt’s career. He could support a story through a family relationship rather than command every scene himself.

An Emmy for Picket Fences

Skerritt found one of his most prominent television roles as Sheriff Jimmy Brock in Picket Fences, which ran from 1992 to 1996.

The drama followed life in the fictional town of Rome, Wisconsin, where strange events often challenged residents’ ideas about law, family and community. As Brock, Skerritt played a sheriff trying to maintain order while confronting cases that rarely offered simple answers.

The Television Academy awarded Skerritt the 1993 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the role. He received another nomination in the same category in 1994.

The award recognized a performance that carried the series through its mix of crime stories, family conflicts and unusual local disputes. It also confirmed his success in television after decades of film work.

A River Runs Through It and His Work With Robert Redford

Skerritt reunited with Redford for A River Runs Through It (1992), Redford’s film adaptation of Norman Maclean’s memoir. Skerritt played the Rev. John Maclean, the father of two sons growing up in Montana.

The story follows the brothers’ different paths and their complicated ties to family, faith and fly-fishing. Skerritt’s character provides a strong presence within that family, shaping the world in which the sons come of age.

The film also connected two points in Skerritt’s career: his early appearance alongside Redford in War Hunt and their later work together on a story rooted in family and the natural world.

Helping Veterans Tell Their Stories

Skerritt’s work extended beyond acting. He co-founded the Red Badge Project in 2012 with former Army captain Evan Bailey.

The organization helps wounded veterans develop storytelling and communication skills. Its mission encourages participants to draw on their experiences and share their stories in their own voices.

The project connects Skerritt’s interest in storytelling with support for people who have served in the military. He was himself an Air Force veteran, and the organization’s work focused on giving veterans tools to express their experiences and strengthen their sense of connection with others.

His involvement offered a practical way to support storytelling outside film and television, helping others develop the skills to tell their own accounts.

A Career Across Generations

Skerritt’s career did not rest on a single defining role. Audiences knew him as the captain in Alien, the instructor in Top Gun and the sheriff in Picket Fences. Other performances, including The Turning Point, Steel Magnolias and A River Runs Through It, showed his range across intimate drama and larger productions.

He worked across generations of actors and filmmakers, from his early film appearances with Redford to projects that brought him to new audiences decades later.

His family’s statement also pointed to a legacy beyond the screen: his support for veterans, creativity and the natural world. Through the Red Badge Project, that commitment included helping others find ways to share their experiences.

Tom Skerritt’s career spanned more than six decades and left a record across film, television and theater. His performances remain part of the stories audiences return to, while his work with veterans reflected a lasting interest in the power of storytelling.
