Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian fashion designer who brought understated elegance to the global stage and built one of the world’s most influential fashion empires, has died at the age of 91. His passing marks the end of an era that shaped not only Italian fashion but also modern style across boardrooms, red carpets, and Hollywood screens.

According to a statement from the Armani fashion house, the designer died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. Despite recent health challenges, he remained active in the company’s creative work until his final days.

A Life Dedicated to Fashion and Elegance

Born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy, Giorgio Armani initially dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, a part-time job as a window dresser in Milan shifted his path toward fashion. In 1975, alongside partner Sergio Galeotti, Armani launched his namesake brand with just $10,000 raised from selling their Volkswagen.

From the late 1970s, Armani redefined fashion with his unlined sports jackets, neutral palettes, and relaxed tailoring. His sleek, understated style soon became a global hallmark, dressing executives, Hollywood stars, and world leaders alike.

Influence on Hollywood and Red Carpets

Armani’s international breakthrough came in 1980 with the film American Gigolo, where actor Richard Gere wore his tailored suits, solidifying Armani as a symbol of cinematic glamour.

Over the decades, Armani designed for more than 200 films and dressed countless celebrities. Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Sean Penn, Sophia Loren, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt were among those who frequently wore his designs.

Oscar night often sparkled with Armani gowns and suits, reinforcing his reputation as the master of red-carpet fashion.

The Armani Empire

At the time of his death, Armani had built a business empire worth over $10 billion, according to Forbes. His brand expanded far beyond clothing to include accessories, perfumes, cosmetics, home furnishings, chocolates, and even books.

He also invested in lifestyle ventures, opening more than 20 restaurants, bars, and clubs worldwide, as well as luxury hotels in Dubai (2009) and Milan (2010). Armani was also the owner of the basketball team Olimpia Milano, underscoring his influence beyond fashion.

Global Tributes and Remembrances

Tributes poured in following the announcement of Armani’s passing.

Donatella Versace, creative director of Versace, said: “The world lost a giant today. He made history and will be remembered forever.”

Actress Julia Roberts, who famously wore an oversized Armani suit to the 1990 Golden Globes, posted on social media: “A true friend. A Legend.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, often seen in Armani attire, praised his “elegance, sobriety, and creativity,” calling him “a symbol of the best Italy.”

Signature Style and Lasting Legacy

Known as “Re Giorgio” (King George) in Italy, Armani created a fashion philosophy rooted in elegance and practicality. His famous quote captured this ethos: “I design for real people. There is no virtue whatsoever in creating clothes and accessories that are not practical.”

His personal style mirrored his creations—simple dark trousers, a plain T-shirt, and minimalist homes that reflected his design principles. Armani’s influence reshaped wardrobes across the globe, from the introduction of women’s power suits in the 1980s to timeless evening gowns that remain fashion staples.

A Reluctant Successor, A Strong Foundation

Armani maintained complete control of his company throughout his life, never selling shares to outsiders. In preparation for succession, he established a foundation to ensure the brand’s stability. Leadership of the creative direction is expected to continue under longtime collaborator Leo Dell’Orco and his niece Silvana Armani.

The company, with more than 9,000 employees and over 600 stores worldwide, continues to be a cornerstone of the global fashion industry.

Philanthropy and Personal Life

Beyond fashion, Armani was committed to humanitarian causes. He supported multiple charities, especially those focused on children and AIDS research. In 2002, he was appointed as a U.N. goodwill ambassador for refugees.

Armani never married and had no children but was very close to his nieces, Silvana and Roberta, and his sister Rosanna. Roberta often represented him at events and played a key role in connecting the Armani brand to the celebrity world.

Public Farewell and Private Funeral

A public viewing of Giorgio Armani will be held at the Armani Theater in Milan, where many of his most iconic collections were first unveiled. The funeral will be private, respecting the wishes of his family.

Remembering “Re Giorgio”

From humble beginnings in Piacenza to the pinnacle of global fashion, Giorgio Armani embodied timeless elegance and entrepreneurial vision. His impact on fashion, film, and culture ensures that his legacy will continue to inspire generations.

As Donatella Versace said, “He made history and will be remembered forever.” For millions who wore his creations, Giorgio Armani will remain not only a designer but also a symbol of enduring style.
