The Howard Stern Show's Uncertain Future: SiriusXM Breaks Silence on Rumors - Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

Is The Howard Stern Show Getting Canceled? Here’s What We Know So Far

Published Time: August-06-2025, 15:00 (U.S. Eastern Time)

Rumors have emerged suggesting the end of an era for ‘The Howard Stern Show’ as its SiriusXM contract approaches expiration. While no official statement has been made, fans and analysts are closely watching what could be a major shift in the satellite radio landscape.

The long-running show, hosted by the legendary Howard Stern, has been a cornerstone of modern radio broadcasting for decades. With the current contract set to expire soon, questions about Stern’s next move—and whether the show will continue—are now front and center.

A Legacy That Shaped Modern Radio

Howard Stern began his career in radio in the 1980s and joined Sirius Satellite Radio—now SiriusXM—in 2006. Known for his provocative style and dedicated fan base, Stern quickly became one of the platform’s most influential and profitable personalities.

His impact on the industry has been widely recognized. Stern was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2012 and appeared on Forbes’ 2022 list of the highest-paid entertainers. He signed a landmark five-year, $500 million contract extension with SiriusXM in 2020, solidifying his role as a central figure in satellite radio.

Despite occasional teases about retirement—like a 2010 prank announcement to writer Sal Governale—Stern has continued his show with dedication, often emphasizing his creative freedom under SiriusXM’s platform.

Are Cancellation Rumors True?

On August 5, 2025, several media reports speculated that The Howard Stern Show could be facing cancellation, primarily due to the impending end of Stern’s most recent five-year deal.

However, no official confirmation has been made by either Howard Stern or SiriusXM. The company has not issued any public statements indicating that the show is being discontinued.

This has not stopped fans and analysts from raising questions. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Credit Suisse analyst Brian Russo noted in a 2020 study that approximately 15%—or roughly 2.7 million subscribers at the time—might cancel their SiriusXM subscriptions if Stern were to retire or leave the platform.

SiriusXM Responds to Speculation

In an October 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, SiriusXM president and chief content officer Scott Greenstein addressed the speculation, making it clear that Stern remains a valued and respected talent within the organization.

“He’s been with me and the company going on two decades, and so he’s pretty happy,” said Greenstein. “But he’s also able, like many great artists, to stop whenever he wants.”

Greenstein emphasized that there would be no attempt to “replace” Stern if he did choose to retire, calling him a “singular talent” whose legacy is irreplaceable.

In a 2024 earnings call, Greenstein further reiterated:

“As for Howard, he continues to excel, get us awareness, and everything else that goes with what he does. I hope he continues forever.”

PEOPLE magazine has reached out to SiriusXM for comment, but no further updates have been provided at the time of writing.

Has Howard Stern Addressed Retirement?

While Stern has not directly responded to the latest cancellation rumors, he has previously spoken about the possibility of retirement.

In a 2019 episode, Stern told longtime co-host Robin Quivers that he was “pretty sure” he was “almost out the door,” citing concerns about how the demands of daily broadcasting affected his health.

“When I’m home on the weekends, I’m fine. And then when I come here, all kinds of stuff happens,” he said, according to Far Out Magazine.

However, Stern later clarified that such statements shouldn’t always be taken at face value. He eventually renewed his contract in 2020, praising SiriusXM for giving him the flexibility to work from home.

“Now that I can work from home, I simply don’t have an excuse to quit,” he said during that renewal announcement.

What Happens If Stern Retires?

Even if Stern chooses to retire, his influence won’t disappear from the SiriusXM platform anytime soon. As part of the 2020 deal, the satellite radio company secured licensing rights to Stern’s entire archive—including both audio and video content—for an additional seven years beyond the contract’s expiration.

This means that SiriusXM will continue to air Stern’s content even if new episodes stop being produced.

Greenstein confirmed this in past interviews, saying:

“We’ll always have Howard’s voice on our air.”

Who Could Carry the Torch at SiriusXM?

SiriusXM has already begun diversifying its roster of audio talent in preparation for a potential transition. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the company has been building a broader lineup that includes notable personalities like:

  • James Corden
  • Conan O’Brien
  • Andy Cohen
  • Alex Cooper, whose Call Her Daddy podcast joined SiriusXM after leaving Spotify in 2024

Alex Cooper, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in October 2024, praised the platform’s long-term vision:

“To see what they’ve done with Howard Stern is incredible. I chose Sirius because there is a lot of opportunity to go to different places and grow Call Her Daddy into something bigger.”

What’s Next for The Howard Stern Show?

As of now, The Howard Stern Show continues to air with no formal cancellation or confirmed retirement plans. Stern has neither announced his departure nor signed a new extension.

What remains clear is that both Stern and SiriusXM have positioned themselves to handle a transition—whenever that may come—without compromising the legacy or reach of the show.

For fans and industry watchers, all eyes will remain on Stern and SiriusXM in the coming months as his 2020 contract draws to a close.
