Manhunt Intensifies for Montana Shooting Suspect After Bar Tragedy Claims Four Lives
Written: August 3, 2025, 17:00 (U.S. Eastern Time)
Authorities in Montana continued a multi-agency manhunt on Saturday for a former Army soldier suspected of fatally shooting four people at a small-town bar. The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Michael Paul Brown, fled the scene barefoot and is believed to be armed and extremely dangerous.
The attack stunned the close-knit community of Anaconda, where Brown lived next door to the crime scene. Helicopters hovered over rugged mountains while law enforcement officers searched the terrain on foot and by air in hopes of apprehending the fugitive.
Search Expands Across Mountainous Terrain
Brown is accused of opening fire at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, Montana, during the early hours of Friday morning. According to authorities, he fled the scene in a white pickup truck, later abandoned in a rural area west of town near Stumptown Road.
A photo released by law enforcement shows the suspect shortly after the incident—barefoot, shirtless, and wearing only black shorts as he walks down concrete steps.
Law enforcement officials from local, state, and federal agencies, including the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, have been scouring the region, focusing particularly on remote wooded areas.
“This remains an active and extremely dangerous situation,” said Lee Johnson, the division’s administrator. “We urge residents to remain alert, report any sightings, and avoid the affected area.”
Victims and Community in Mourning
As of Saturday afternoon, the names of the victims had not been officially released. The Anaconda-Deer Lodge Police Department confirmed that family notifications were still underway.
The owner of The Owl Bar, David Gwerder, told the Associated Press that the victims included a bartender and three regular patrons. He emphasized that Brown was familiar with the victims and was not known to have had any ongoing disputes with them.
“He knew everybody in that bar,” Gwerder said. “He didn’t have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped.”
Community Reaction and Temporary Lockdown
The initial shock of the shooting spread quickly through the small town of Anaconda, home to about 9,000 residents. Businesses locked their doors, and customers sheltered in place as word of the violence circulated.
A temporary lockdown was issued for the area around Stumptown Road but was lifted Saturday as the active search continued. While businesses were allowed to reopen, Anaconda Police Chief Bill Sather urged caution and situational awareness.
“This is a small, tight-knit community that has been harmed by the heinous actions of one individual,” Johnson said. “He does not represent what this community or Montanans stand for.”
Suspect’s Military Background and Mental Health History
Michael Paul Brown is a U.S. Army veteran who served from 2001 to 2005 as an armor crewman, including a deployment to Iraq in 2004. He later joined the Montana National Guard, serving until 2009 and leaving with the rank of sergeant, according to Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Ruth Castro.
Family members say Brown has long battled mental illness. His niece, Clare Boyle, described his condition as serious and persistent.
“This isn’t just a drunk or high man going wild,” she told the AP via Facebook. “It’s a sick man who doesn’t know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn’t know where or when he is either.”
Boyle also stated that family members had repeatedly tried to get him help but were unsuccessful in accessing adequate treatment.
Safety Warnings and Ongoing Investigation
Officials continue to urge caution for all residents in the greater Anaconda area. While no additional injuries have been reported since the incident, authorities have reiterated that Brown is armed and poses a serious threat.
The suspect’s vehicle has been recovered, but officials did not disclose whether any weapons or additional evidence were found inside. Investigators have not yet released information about a possible motive.
“While law enforcement has not received reports of Brown harming any other individuals since the shooting, he remains highly dangerous,” Johnson said.
Town History and Location
Anaconda, located approximately 25 miles northwest of Butte, is a former copper-smelting town nestled in Montana’s mountainous terrain. The town’s iconic smelter stack, no longer in use, towers over the valley and is a reminder of its industrial roots.
The surrounding geography—including heavily forested slopes and limited road access—has made the search for Brown particularly difficult. Residents and law enforcement alike are grappling with the magnitude of the violence and its impact on the town’s sense of security.
What’s Next
Authorities have not set a timeline for the conclusion of the manhunt. Investigators are urging anyone with information about Brown’s whereabouts to contact the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation or their local police department.
In the meantime, community members have begun gathering in private and online to support the victims’ families and process the events of the past 48 hours.
More details, including the identities of the victims and findings from the investigation, are expected in the coming days.
