Elton John Opens Up About Vision Loss and Recovery Journey

Elton John, the legendary musician, has revealed that he is still struggling with significant vision loss months after experiencing a severe eye infection.

Speaking at a gala performance of The Devil Wears Prada musical in London on Sunday, John expressed gratitude to his husband, David Furnish, for his unwavering support.

“I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight. So it’s hard for me to see it. But I love to hear it, and boy, it sounded good tonight,” said John, who composed the score for the show.

A Challenging Recovery

In an interview with Good Morning America last week, John elaborated on how his vision problems have impacted his work and daily life.

“I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France, and it’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see. My left eye is not the greatest either,” the 77-year-old explained.

Although doctors remain hopeful about his recovery, John acknowledged the challenges of his current situation:

“There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but… I’m kind of stuck at the moment. I can do something like this (an interview), but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start.”

Sharing His Journey

John first discussed his condition publicly in September through an Instagram post, where he described dealing with a severe eye infection that left him with limited vision in one eye.

“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process, and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he wrote, while thanking his medical team and family for their support.

He added that he spent the summer recuperating at home and shared his optimism about the progress he has made so far:

A Career Milestone

Though John officially retired from touring in 2023 after decades of electrifying live performances, he remains active in music. He wrote the score for The Devil Wears Prada musical, which is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel and the iconic 2006 film adaptation.

Despite his challenges, Elton John continues to inspire audiences with his resilience and dedication to his craft, showing that his passion for music transcends all obstacles.
