Brazil Plane Crash: 10 Family Members Perish, 17 Injured on Ground - Reuters

Tragic Private Plane Crash in Brazil Claims Ten Lives

A private plane crash in Gramado, a city in southern Brazil, has claimed the lives of ten family members, including the pilot, Luiz Claudio Galeazzi, and his loved ones.

Galeazzi, a 61-year-old Brazilian businessman and the CEO of Galeazzi & Associados, was piloting the small aircraft when it crashed just minutes after takeoff on Sunday morning. Onboard with him were his wife, three daughters, and other family members, all of whom perished in the accident.

Crash Details and Impact

Reports indicate that the plane, which was en route to Jundiaí, São Paulo, took off in challenging weather conditions. After flying for approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles), the aircraft reportedly hit the chimney of a building, as well as a house and a shop, before falling into the urban area of Gramado.

Eyewitness Nadia Hansen described the incident: “At the time, it was revving up. You could see that it was accelerating a lot. Then there was a bang as it hit the building, and I thought it had dropped in front of the house.”

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, where the plane’s wreckage, surrounded by debris from damaged buildings, was still smoking. Local authorities confirmed that 17 people on the ground were injured, with two in serious condition.

Tributes and Reactions

Luiz Galeazzi was highly regarded for his leadership at Galeazzi & Associados, a corporate restructuring and crisis management firm based in São Paulo. The company expressed its deep sorrow over his death, praising his commitment to his family and his significant career. A statement from Galeazzi & Associados read: “Luiz Galeazzi will be eternally remembered for his dedication to his family and his remarkable career as the leader of Galeazzi & Associados.”

Investigation and Community Support

The crash is being investigated by Brazil’s Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA). Local authorities, including Rio Grande do Sul state governor Eduardo Leite, assured the public that the state is fully mobilized to provide necessary assistance. Leite confirmed that all ten victims were members of the Galeazzi family.

Gramado, a popular tourist destination known for its festive events, was deeply affected by the crash. The region had already experienced devastating flooding earlier in the year, which had claimed dozens of lives and displaced around 150,000 people.

As the investigation into the cause of the crash continues, the community mourns the tragic loss of the Galeazzi family and the devastation it has caused both locally and beyond.
