Intel Considers New Leadership, Eyes Semiconductor Veteran Lip-Bu Tan

Intel, the iconic American chipmaker, is actively searching for a new CEO following the recent departure of Pat Gelsinger, who stepped down after nearly four years in the role. The company’s board is exploring external candidates, including Lip-Bu Tan, a well-respected semiconductor industry veteran and former Intel board member, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Lip-Bu Tan and Other Contenders

Tan, known for his deep expertise in the semiconductor industry, has been approached by Intel’s board to assess his interest in leading the company. The discussions are at a preliminary stage and remain confidential, sources revealed.

In addition to Tan, Intel is reportedly considering Matt Murphy, the CEO of Marvell Technology, as a potential candidate. Murphy, during a recent earnings call, emphasized his commitment to Marvell, stating he is “100% focused” on his current role.

Transition Amid Challenges

The leadership change comes as Intel faces mounting pressure to accelerate its turnaround strategy. Gelsinger, who took the helm in 2021, was tasked with revitalizing the company’s manufacturing and AI capabilities but struggled to meet his ambitious goals. Under his leadership, Intel experienced significant challenges, including lost contracts, unmet commitments, and declining revenues.

In 2023, Intel’s revenue fell to $54 billion, a sharp decline of nearly one-third compared to when Gelsinger started. Analysts predict the company will post a net loss of $3.68 billion this year—its first annual loss since 1986. Shares have also plummeted, losing more than 60% of their value since Gelsinger’s early days as CEO.

A High-Stakes Search

Intel’s board has formed a search committee to identify Gelsinger’s successor, with a decision expected in the coming months. In the interim, Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner and senior executive Michelle Johnston Holthaus will serve as co-CEOs.

The search for a new CEO comes at a critical juncture for Intel, which is grappling with intense competition in the semiconductor industry. Once a dominant player, Intel is now navigating one of the most challenging periods in its 50-year history. The company’s declining market performance has even attracted interest from potential acquirers, including Qualcomm, according to earlier reports.

Leadership Backgrounds

  • Lip-Bu Tan: Former CEO of Cadence Design and an Intel board member from 2021 until August 2023. Tan was brought in to help restore Intel’s global leadership in chipmaking but departed after disagreements with Gelsinger over workforce size, manufacturing strategies, and company culture.
  • Matt Murphy: CEO of Marvell Technology since 2016 and a semiconductor industry veteran with over two decades of experience at Maxim Integrated Products.

Looking Ahead

As Intel navigates this leadership transition, the industry is closely watching its next moves. The new CEO will face the daunting task of steering the company back to growth and innovation amid fierce global competition. Whether it’s Tan, Murphy, or another contender, Intel’s choice will play a pivotal role in shaping its future trajectory.
