Yemen Government Launches Major Offensive to Retake Houthi-Held Territory

President Rashad al-Alimi announced military operations as Houthi advances around Taiz and the Red Sea raise the stakes for regional security.

ADEN, Yemen – Yemen’s internationally recognized government has launched military operations aimed at restoring state control over territory held by the Houthi movement, opening a new phase in the country’s renewed conflict.

President Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council and commander of the armed forces, announced the operation on October 4, saying the government had moved from preparation and readiness to military action after what he described as the exhaustion of opportunities for de-escalation.

The announcement does not establish that government forces have already retaken significant territory. It marks the formal start of an operation whose battlefield outcome remains unresolved.

Yemen announces military operations

Al-Alimi said he had ordered the armed forces, security forces and other military formations to begin their assigned missions under approved plans.

The stated objective is to restore what the presidency calls the remaining territory of the republic and extend state institutions and authority across the country. Al-Alimi also said the operation would continue until the government’s objectives are achieved.

The president framed the campaign as a struggle to restore state authority rather than a conflict with particular regions, sects or tribes.

He also instructed government forces to protect civilians and property and warned against revenge or retaliation against people in areas controlled by the Houthis.

Saudi Arabia confirms operational support

Saudi Arabia’s Joint Forces Command confirmed on October 4 that its coalition continues to provide full operational support to Yemen’s armed forces.

The Saudi statement said the coalition remains committed to supporting the internationally recognized government and restoring state institutions. It also linked the operation to what Riyadh describes as Houthi threats to Saudi territory and maritime navigation in the southern Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The statement reflects the Saudi government’s position and should not be treated as an independent determination of every allegation against the Houthis.

Saudi Arabia has backed Yemen’s internationally recognized government since intervening militarily in the country’s civil war in 2015.

Fighting has intensified around Taiz

The announcement follows a sharp escalation around Taiz, a strategically important city in southwestern Yemen.

Yemeni government forces reported carrying out 20 airstrikes against Houthi positions, personnel, vehicles and military equipment in Taiz province on October 2, according to the government’s military spokesperson. Reuters also reported fighting across the province and the closure of roads designated as military operational areas.

The fighting is occurring after a rapid Houthi advance along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

Reuters reported in September that Houthi forces had seized territory including the port city of Mocha and the southern stretch of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline. Fighting subsequently spread toward strategic areas of Taiz and Lahij.

Control of southwestern Yemen is strategically important because of its proximity to the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Bab el-Mandeb raises the regional stakes

The conflict is no longer only a question of territorial control inside Yemen.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is one of the world’s important maritime routes. Recent fighting and Houthi advances have raised concerns about the security of shipping passing through the area.

Saudi Arabia has also accused the Houthis of attacks affecting its territory and maritime interests. The Saudi coalition says Houthi activity near the southern Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb threatens navigation and international trade. Those claims are part of Riyadh’s stated justification for continuing military operations.

The broader conflict is occurring while the Middle East is already experiencing severe disruption to energy and maritime routes, increasing the potential regional consequences of renewed fighting in Yemen.

Government offensive follows Houthi advances

The timing of the operation is significant because government forces have been under pressure following recent Houthi territorial gains.

Reuters reported that Houthi forces had pushed toward strategic heights in Taiz and Lahij in an effort to consolidate their control along the Red Sea coast and strengthen their position between the coast and government-held areas farther south.

The Yemeni government therefore enters the new phase of fighting after losing ground rather than from a position in which it has already demonstrated a successful counteroffensive.

That distinction is important. The government’s announcement establishes its decision to launch military operations, but the eventual territorial outcome remains uncertain.

Humanitarian pressure is growing

The renewed fighting is also worsening an already severe humanitarian situation.

The World Food Programme has warned that food insecurity is increasing in areas affected by the renewed conflict. Reuters reported that three out of four families in government-controlled areas were facing food insecurity, while tens of thousands of people had been displaced by the latest fighting.

The fighting around Taiz has been particularly difficult for humanitarian access.

Displaced families have moved toward government-held areas around Aden and Taiz after fleeing Houthi advances and renewed bombardment. Aid organizations have warned that continued fighting could further disrupt food supplies and humanitarian operations.

Iran’s role remains part of the wider conflict

The Houthis are widely described by governments and international reporting as aligned with Iran, but the launch of Yemen’s offensive should not be presented as proof that Iran has ordered or directly controls the Houthi military campaign.

The renewed fighting is occurring within a much broader regional conflict involving Iran, Saudi Arabia and other states.

The Yemeni government and Saudi Arabia have their own stated security objectives, while the Houthis maintain their own military and political agenda.

The available evidence therefore supports describing the Houthis as Iran-aligned, but does not establish a specific Iranian order behind the latest battlefield developments.

No evidence yet of a government victory

Al-Alimi’s announcement represents a major escalation, but it is not evidence that government forces have already restored state authority.

The presidency says the operation is intended to recover territory and rebuild state institutions. Saudi Arabia has confirmed operational support. Fighting around Taiz and other areas remains active, while the Houthis retain control over substantial territory.

The next stage will depend on whether government forces and their allies can reverse recent Houthi gains, particularly around Taiz and the Red Sea approaches.

For now, Yemen has moved from preparations for a counteroffensive to a formally announced military campaign.
