Brazil Supreme Court Convicts Bolsonaro’s Son in Case Linked to Coup Trial

Verdict adds new pressure on political family ahead of Brazil's elections

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Brazil’s Supreme Court on Tuesday convicted former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro on charges of coercion connected to efforts aimed at influencing judicial proceedings that resulted in the conviction of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, for an attempted coup.

The court sentenced Eduardo Bolsonaro to four years and two months in prison after all five justices hearing the case concluded that he had improperly sought to influence foreign authorities to pressure Brazilian officials involved in the proceedings against the former president.

The ruling marks another major development in Brazil’s ongoing political and legal fallout following the country’s disputed post-election period and the subsequent prosecution of senior figures linked to efforts to overturn the 2022 presidential election result.

Court Rejects Defense Arguments

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who also presided over Jair Bolsonaro’s coup-related trial, criticized Eduardo Bolsonaro’s actions during the proceedings.

According to the court’s findings, the former lawmaker engaged in lobbying efforts in the United States aimed at encouraging measures against Brazilian authorities involved in the prosecution of his father.

De Moraes stated that a federal lawmaker’s responsibilities do not include campaigning abroad against institutions of their own country.

Attorneys representing Eduardo Bolsonaro argued there was insufficient evidence to support a conviction and disputed the court’s conclusions. The former congressman has been residing in Texas since February 2025.

International Dimension Adds Tension

The case has unfolded against a backdrop of periodic tensions between Brazil and the United States.

Last year, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods while criticizing the prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted for attempting to overturn his electoral defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Relations between Washington and Brasília appeared to improve earlier this year when Lula visited the White House. However, trade tensions resurfaced in June after the United States proposed new tariffs on Brazilian imports, arguing that Brazil maintained unfair trade practices.

Lula responded by saying he presented documents during his Washington visit showing that the United States maintains a trade surplus with Brazil, challenging claims that the trade relationship disadvantages American interests.

Political Impact Ahead of Elections

The ruling also arrives as Brazil prepares for presidential elections scheduled for October.

Eduardo Bolsonaro has recently been active in efforts to support the political ambitions of his brother, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who is widely expected to challenge Lula in the upcoming contest.

Flávio Bolsonaro’s political prospects have recently faced scrutiny following controversy involving a payment linked to a banker who had previously been at the center of public scandal.

Neither Eduardo Bolsonaro nor his representatives immediately issued public comments following the Supreme Court’s decision.

Bolsonaro Family Remains Influential

Despite the legal challenges facing several members of the Bolsonaro family, they continue to play a significant role in Brazil’s conservative political movement.

Eduardo and Flávio Bolsonaro recently traveled to Washington, where they met with U.S. officials, including President Trump.

The conviction further intensifies legal and political pressures on a family that remains a prominent force in Brazilian politics even after Jair Bolsonaro’s imprisonment.

As Brazil moves closer to national elections, the court’s decision is likely to add another layer of uncertainty to an already polarized political environment while drawing renewed attention to the relationship between domestic judicial proceedings and international political influence.
