A live video showing Miss Universe Mexico, Fatima Bosch, being scolded by a Thai pageant official has gone viral. The clip sparked allegations of misogyny and reignited global debate about women’s treatment in beauty pageants.

In the footage, Nawat Itsaragrisil, president of Miss Grand International (MGI), is seen publicly criticizing Bosch for not posting enough promotional content about Thailand, the host country of the 74th Miss Universe competition. The event will be held in Bangkok later this month.

During the heated exchange, Nawat accused Bosch of following orders from Mexico’s pageant director to sabotage promotional activities. He allegedly called her a “dumbhead” — a claim he later denied, saying he meant she caused “damage.”

When Bosch tried to respond, Nawat interrupted her and said, “I didn’t give you the opportunity to talk.” He then ordered security to escort her out of the room. Several contestants stood in solidarity with Bosch and walked out, prompting Nawat to threaten disqualification if they didn’t return to their seats.

Contestant’s Response and Public Support

Bosch, 25, later told reporters that she felt insulted and unfairly treated. She suggested the confrontation came from tension between Nawat and the Miss Universe Organization, whose president is also Mexican.

“I’m here to represent my country and give my best,” Bosch said in a TikTok video. “He told me to ‘shut up’ and said many things that were disrespectful. The world needs to see this because women are empowered, and no one can silence our voices.”

Her statement drew widespread support. The president of the Miss Universe Organization, Raúl Rocha, condemned Nawat’s actions and barred him from further participation in official events. Rocha said the Thai official humiliated Bosch and tried to intimidate her.

“I have restricted Nawat’s involvement in all Miss Universe activities,” Rocha said. “No one has the right to silence or exclude a contestant.”

Nawat later apologized during a live ceremony, saying, “I have to say I’m very sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone.”

Mexico’s President Weighs In

The controversy reached Mexico’s highest office. President Claudia Sheinbaum praised Bosch’s courage during a national press briefing, calling her response “an example of how women must raise their voices.”

Sheinbaum recalled a familiar Mexican phrase, “Calladita te ves más bonita” — “You look more beautiful when you’re silent.” She rejected the saying, proposing a new message:
“Women look more beautiful when we raise our voices and participate. This is about recognizing our rights. I admire this young woman,” she said.

Pageant Industry Faces Renewed Criticism

The incident reignited long-standing criticism of beauty pageants and their treatment of women. Catalina Ruiz Navarro, a Colombian feminist journalist based in Mexico City, told CNN that contests like Miss Universe still reflect patriarchal values.

“The Miss Universe pageant disciplines and monitors women’s bodies,” Ruiz Navarro said. “Bosch’s response was courageous because she risked her standing. The fact that other contestants joined her shows collective strength.”

Sheynnis Palacios, Miss Universe 2023 from Nicaragua, also spoke out. She said on social media that “a crown should not cost a woman her dignity.” Pageants, she added, should empower women, not humiliate them.

Alicia Machado, the 1996 Miss Universe from Venezuela, shared similar memories. “I faced the same issues years ago,” she said. “These competitions must evolve and support gender equality, not outdated practices.”

Calls for Change in Beauty Pageants

Activists say this incident could push the industry toward reform. Ruiz Navarro believes Bosch’s stand may limit such abuse, but she argues change must go deeper.

“As long as pageants exist, they must be fairer and more inclusive,” she said. “Every woman deserves dignity and respect.”

This year’s Miss Universe competition began in Bangkok on Sunday, with contestants from 130 countries. The finale is set for November 21, where the new titleholder will be crowned.
