2025 Nissan Armada vs Chevrolet Tahoe: Which Full-Size SUV Is the Better Choice?

Published Time: 08-13-2025, 14:30

Full-size SUVs remain essential for families who need spacious seating, heavy towing capacity, and dependable performance. The 2025 Nissan Armada, redesigned with a turbocharged V6 and updated interior, now challenges the Chevrolet Tahoe, a long-standing benchmark for American full-size SUVs. Edmunds tested both vehicles to assess performance, towing capability, comfort, features, and value.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The 2025 Nissan Armada introduces a new twin-turbocharged V6 engine that produces 425 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, delivering strong acceleration and robust low-end power. At Edmunds’ test track, the Armada sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, outpacing the Chevrolet Tahoe’s standard V8, which achieves the same in 7.7 seconds. The Tahoe’s optional V8 improves output to 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft, narrowing the performance gap.

The Tahoe also offers an optional six-cylinder diesel engine producing 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. While this engine is less powerful than either gasoline option, it provides EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg, surpassing the Armada’s 18 mpg. For buyers prioritizing fuel efficiency, the Tahoe diesel is a notable choice.

Winner: Tie

Towing Capability

In towing, the Armada’s 8,500-pound maximum capacity slightly exceeds the Tahoe’s 8,400 pounds (achievable with the Max Trailering package). Both SUVs feature trailer hitches, wiring, trailer brake controls, and sway control systems. Upper trims of the Armada add integrated brake controllers and hill descent assist, while the Tahoe’s Max Trailering package provides similar enhancements.

Base-model Tahoes tow up to 7,900 pounds, making Armada’s standard towing slightly more favorable for those who need full capacity without optional upgrades.

Winner: Armada

Comfort and Cargo Space

Both SUVs deliver a smooth, comfortable ride for their truck-based construction, and adaptive air suspension is available to improve ride quality further. The Armada excels in seat comfort, offering plush seating for front and rear passengers. The Tahoe’s seats feel firmer, though second-row passengers benefit from 3 additional inches of legroom.

Cargo capacity favors the Tahoe. Behind the third row, it offers 25.5 cubic feet, roughly five cubic feet more than the Armada. When folding all rear seats, the Tahoe provides about 25% more cargo volume, making it ideal for large loads or family trips.

Winner: Tie

Features and Value

Pricing for the 2025 Tahoe starts at $62,095 for the rear-wheel-drive LS trim, while the Armada SV begins at $59,530. Both vehicles include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, large digital instrument clusters, and advanced driver-assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control.

Both SUVs offer hands-free driving systems. Chevrolet’s Super Cruise has been noted as more capable and convenient than Nissan’s ProPilot Assist, though Armada remains competitive.

The Tahoe’s extensive engine and option lineup allow for more customization, including higher maximum fuel economy with the diesel variant. However, Armada’s combination of slightly lower pricing, strong power, and generous standard features provides strong overall value.

Winner: Armada

Edmunds Verdict

The Chevrolet Tahoe and Nissan Armada are both excellent choices for buyers seeking full-size SUVs with ample seating and towing capability. However, the 2025 Nissan Armada gains an edge due to its refreshed design, superior standard power, higher towing capacity, and slightly lower starting price. For families and drivers seeking a balance of performance, comfort, and value, the Armada stands out as the more compelling option in the full-size SUV segment.
