Hostage Families Call for Nationwide Strike as Israel Prepares to Intensify Gaza Offensive

Published Time: 08-11-2025, 09:00

Families of Israeli hostages held captive in Gaza have announced plans for a nationwide general strike next Sunday. The move protests the Israeli security cabinet’s recent decision to escalate military operations and take control of Gaza City—a development families fear could endanger the remaining hostages.

This unprecedented call for collective action comes amid growing tensions between Israel’s government and the relatives of those still held captive by Hamas since the outbreak of conflict on October 7, 2023. The families aim to mobilize workers and private businesses across the country in an effort to halt economic activity and pressure authorities to prioritize the safe return of hostages.

Families Mobilize Nationwide General Strike to Save Hostages

Relatives of hostages in Tel Aviv declared, “We are shutting down the country to save the soldiers and the hostages.” The initiative is supported by the October 7 Council, representing families of soldiers killed in the war’s early days.

The strike is envisioned as a grassroots effort primarily driven by private companies and individual citizens. Organizers reported that within hours of the announcement, hundreds of companies pledged participation, along with thousands of citizens committing to take the day off work.

However, Israel’s largest labor union, the Histadrut, has yet to endorse the strike. The families are scheduled to meet with Histadrut Chairman Arnon Bar-David on Monday to urge union support for the protest.

Emotional Appeals from Hostage Families Call on Industry Leaders

Anat Angrest, mother of Matan—one of the hostages—delivered a heartfelt plea to Israel’s economic and labor leaders: “Your silence is killing our children.” She stressed that while leaders may sympathize privately, action is urgently needed.

“I know your hearts are with us and in pain – but that is not enough,” Angrest said. “Silence kills. That is why I am here today to ask for something I have avoided until now – to ask the heads of industry: you have the power.”

Histadrut’s Past Strike Efforts Highlight Labor’s Role

The Histadrut has previously organized a general strike in solidarity with hostage families. Following the September 2024 killing of six Israeli hostages by Hamas, the union disrupted vital sectors such as transportation, banking, and healthcare, and joined widespread protests.

Despite this, the Israeli government criticized the strike as politically motivated and secured a labor court injunction to halt further actions.

Currently, the Histadrut has remained publicly silent on the new strike call. Meanwhile, opposition political figures have voiced strong support.

Political Leaders Back the Strike Initiative

Opposition leader Yair Lapid endorsed the families’ call, stating, “The call by the families of the hostages for a general strike is justified and appropriate.”

Yair Golan, chairman of the Democrats party, announced his party’s participation and urged all Israeli citizens who value life and mutual responsibility to join the strike and public demonstrations. “We must resist and disrupt until our demands for the safe return of hostages are met,” he said.

Israeli Government Advances Military Plan Despite Hostage Risks

The Israeli security cabinet’s recent decision to advance plans for a large-scale military takeover of Gaza City has sparked fierce criticism from hostage families and human rights advocates. Approximately 50 hostages remain captive in Gaza, with officials believing around 20 are still alive.

Families warn that escalating the conflict in Gaza City could jeopardize these hostages’ lives, potentially leading to tragic consequences.

Despite the concerns, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the military escalation during a Sunday press conference.

Netanyahu Defends Gaza City Offensive as Essential

Netanyahu described Gaza City and the central refugee camps as “the two remaining strongholds” of Hamas, insisting they must be targeted to end the conflict decisively.

“Contrary to false claims, this is the best way to end the war and the best way to end it speedily,” Netanyahu said. He emphasized the need to “finish the job and complete the defeat of Hamas” through intensified military operations.

Conclusion: Uncertainty Looms Over Hostage Safety Amid War Escalation

The planned general strike highlights deep divisions within Israeli society over how to handle the war in Gaza, especially regarding the fate of hostages.

As military operations intensify, hostage families continue to push for greater civilian and labor support to pressure the government into prioritizing negotiations and protective measures.

With the potential for wide-scale economic disruption looming next Sunday, the strike could mark a significant moment in the ongoing conflict and Israel’s internal response to it.
