Shocking Midair Breakup: NYC Tour Helicopter Disintegrated Before Deadly Crash, NTSB Report Reveals

A preliminary report from federal investigators has revealed chilling new details about the tragic helicopter crash that killed six people during a sightseeing tour over New York City last month.

Surveillance Footage Captures Catastrophic Breakup

Images released Wednesday by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) show the helicopter breaking apart in midair—its tail separating from the fuselage, followed by the rotor blades and transmission detaching from the main cabin. These dramatic stills, taken from surveillance footage, are at the heart of the NTSB’s early findings.

Several eyewitnesses reported hearing loud “bangs” moments before the chopper began spinning and plummeted into the river.

Aviation Expert Points to Mechanical Failure

Justin Green, an aviation attorney and former Marine helicopter pilot, said the images suggest the helicopter’s main rotor may have struck the tail boom—a catastrophic failure likely triggered by a mechanical malfunction.

“It’s clear that some mechanical issue precipitated the breakup,” Green said. He explained that such tail strikes can occur if the pilot mishandles a power loss emergency, allowing rotor speed to drop and blades to flap uncontrollably.

Congo Ebola Crisis Sparks Violent Backlash as Fear and Distrust Deepen

No Clear Cause Yet—but Red Flags Are Emerging

While the initial six-page NTSB report stops short of naming a definitive cause, experts say further investigation of the wreckage—including rotor blades, engine, and transmission—will be key.

The helicopter, a Bell 206L-4 built in 2004, had nearly 13,000 hours of flight time on its airframe and more than 23,000 hours on its engine. It had flown 50 hours since its last inspection on February 27, and FAA records show a previous transmission issue flagged in September 2024.

Investigators will now examine overhaul and maintenance records to confirm whether the aircraft was in proper condition.

Pilot’s Experience Under Scrutiny

The helicopter was being flown by Seankese Johnson, a 36-year-old former Navy SEAL who had only recently earned his commercial pilot’s license in 2023. While Johnson had logged 790 total flight hours, he had fewer than 50 hours flying this specific Bell 206L-4 model.

“He didn’t seem to have much experience in this aircraft,” noted retired NTSB investigator Al Yurman. “It’s a complex machine. Personally, I’d prefer someone with more time in that seat.”

The flight, which took off around 3 p.m. from the Wall Street heliport, was Johnson’s first of the day after a 10-day break—and his eighth flight that day.

High-Tech Glasses May Hold Clues

Interestingly, the helicopter had no onboard video or data recorder. However, photos taken before takeoff show the pilot wearing computer-augmented sunglasses capable of capturing video and audio. The glasses have not yet been recovered.

Tragic Loss for a Visiting Spanish Family

All six people on board were killed, including a prominent family from Barcelona, Spain:

  • Agustín Escobar, 49, global CEO of rail infrastructure at Siemens Mobility
  • Mercè Camprubí Montal, 39, Siemens Energy employee and granddaughter of a former Barcelona FC president
  • Their children: Agustin, 10; Mercedes, 8; and Victor, 4

Montal and the children had flown in to meet Escobar, who was on a business trip to New York.

Tour Company Faces Scrutiny

The aircraft was operated by New York Helicopter, a tour company with a troubled past. The firm has gone through bankruptcy and has faced lawsuits over unpaid debts. It confirmed it is cooperating with the ongoing investigation but has not publicly commented since the report’s release.

Mounting Concerns Over Sightseeing Flights

This crash is the fifth fatal helicopter tour accident in the NYC area since 2005, raising new concerns about the safety of sightseeing flights over one of the world’s busiest urban airspaces. In total, 20 people have died in such crashes—many due to mechanical failures or pilot errors.

As the investigation continues, families are left grieving, and questions are mounting over whether enough is being done to ensure the safety of tourists eager to view New York from above.
