Swedish Pirate Bay Backer Carl Lundström Dies in Slovenia Plane Crash
Swedish entrepreneur and early backer of file-sharing website The Pirate Bay, Carl Lundström, died in a plane crash in the Slovenian mountains on Monday. Reports indicate that Lundström, one of the primary financiers of The Pirate Bay, was piloting his own private aircraft at the time of the incident.
Plane Crash in Slovenia
According to the right-wing party Alternative for Sweden, for which Lundström ran in the 2021 elections, he was flying solo in his Mooney M-20 aircraft. The party confirmed in a Facebook post that he had taken off from Zagreb en route to Zurich but crashed in Slovenia.
Slovenian media reported that a propeller plane crashed into a cabin on Velika Planina mountain, splitting the structure in two. Bad weather conditions and the remote location delayed rescue efforts. On Monday, rescue teams discovered parts of the plane inside the damaged cabin but initially struggled to identify the pilot.
Lundström’s Role in The Pirate Bay
Lundström was a crucial financial supporter of The Pirate Bay in its early days. From 2003 to 2005, his company, Rix Telecom, provided essential services and equipment to the controversial file-sharing platform.
In 2009, he was one of four defendants charged with being an “accessory to breaching copyright law” when The Pirate Bay was put on trial for facilitating copyright infringement. Although he appealed his conviction, the court reduced his prison sentence from one year to four months. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a fine of 32 million Swedish krona (€2.9 million).
Political Involvement
Beyond his business ventures, Lundström was active in Swedish politics. In 1991, he financed the Swedish Progress Party, which later merged with the Sweden Democrats.
He became involved with Alternative for Sweden in 2018, serving as a district manager and eventually running in the 2021 Church Assembly election, which he lost.
Legacy
Lundström was also known as the heir to Wasabröd, the renowned Swedish crispbread producer. His contributions to business, technology, and politics have left a lasting impact, though he remained a polarizing figure due to his affiliations and legal battles.
His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Sweden’s digital and political landscape.
