Trump Cabinet Nominees Face Threats Amid Transition

Several of President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees and appointees were targeted Tuesday night with threats described as “violent and un-American,” prompting swift action from law enforcement. These incidents included bomb threats and “swatting” — a hoax intended to provoke an emergency response by authorities.

Karoline Leavitt, the Trump-Vance transition spokeswoman and incoming White House press secretary, revealed that some threats were accompanied by pro-Palestinian messages, including a pipe bomb threat.

High-Profile Targets

Key nominees targeted included:

  • John Ratcliffe, nominated as CIA director
  • Pete Hegseth, nominee for Secretary of Defense
  • Rep. Elise Stefanik, nominee for UN Ambassador
  • Brooke Rollins, nominee for Secretary of Agriculture
  • Lee Zeldin, nominee for EPA Administrator

These individuals, along with others, faced direct threats to their lives and families.

Swift Law Enforcement Response

Local and federal authorities acted quickly, conducting safety sweeps and ensuring no explosive devices were present. For instance:

  • New York State Police, aided by K9 units, searched Stefanik’s Saratoga home but found no threats.
  • The FBI confirmed it is actively investigating the incidents and emphasized the seriousness of these threats.

Statements from Nominees

Many nominees shared their experiences and gratitude toward law enforcement.

  • Lee Zeldin: A pipe bomb threat accompanied by a pro-Palestinian message targeted his home. “My family and I are safe, and we are cooperating with authorities,” he stated.
  • Elise Stefanik: Her office confirmed that while driving home for Thanksgiving, she was informed of a bomb threat. “We deeply appreciate the professionalism of law enforcement,” her statement read.
  • Pete Hegseth: He detailed how a police officer informed his family about a credible pipe bomb threat. “We will not be intimidated,” Hegseth said, affirming his commitment to serve in the administration.

Broader Implications

Other Trump picks, including GOP Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (Labor Secretary nominee) and Scott Turner (HUD nominee), also reported similar threats. Chavez-DeRemer noted, “Thanks to quick action by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, my family is safe.”

Florida authorities also responded to a bomb threat at the mailbox of a relative of Matt Gaetz, a former attorney general nominee. However, no devices were found.

White House and Trump Transition Team Respond

A White House spokesperson confirmed that President Joe Biden has been briefed and is in contact with law enforcement. “We condemn all threats of political violence,” the statement read.

Karoline Leavitt reiterated the Trump transition team’s focus on unity and resilience. “Dangerous acts of intimidation will not deter us,” she stated.

Context: Past Assassination Attempts

These threats come just months after Trump survived two assassination attempts, including a shooting incident at a July rally in Pennsylvania. Trump credited a presentation chart he was using for saving his life, as it deflected a bullet aimed at him.

As investigations continue, law enforcement remains vigilant to ensure the safety of the incoming administration and their families.
