Tragic Submarine Sinking in Red Sea Leaves Six Dead

A recreational submarine carrying 45 tourists on an underwater reef tour sank off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of six Russian nationals, according to the provincial governor. More than two dozen passengers sustained injuries, but all survivors were successfully rescued.

The cause of the submarine’s sinking remains unknown. The Russian consulate reported that the incident occurred approximately 1,000 meters (0.6 miles) from shore. The vessel, named “Sindbad,” was operated by a local tour company and offered 40-minute underwater cruises at depths of 20-25 meters (65-80 feet), providing panoramic views of marine life.

Red Sea governor Maj. Gen. Amr Hanafi confirmed that the submarine was carrying 45 tourists along with five Egyptian crewmembers. Among the 39 survivors, 29 sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. No individuals remain unaccounted for.

According to Russia’s Tass news agency, the fatalities included at least two children. The Russian consulate initially stated that all tourists onboard were Russian, but Governor Hanafi later clarified that Indian, Norwegian, and Swedish nationals were also among the passengers.

Footage released by the governor’s office showed survivors receiving medical attention in the hospital. One Russian tourist had a small head bandage, while a family with two young daughters reassured officials that they were unharmed. An Indian man was seen requesting to visit his critically injured daughter, as doctors explained her condition to Governor Hanafi.

Hurghada is a popular destination for divers and snorkelers, renowned for its vibrant coral reefs. However, this is not the first maritime accident in the region. In November, a tourist yacht sank in the Red Sea following warnings of rough waters, leading to four deaths and 33 rescues.

Tourism is a vital sector of Egypt’s economy, but ongoing regional conflicts have led some travel companies to suspend or limit operations in the Red Sea. The tour company responsible for the Sindbad submarine has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the sinking as Egypt grapples with yet another tragedy in its waters.
