At least 33 people have died in Thailand following severe flooding in the country’s southern region, a senior government official said on Wednesday, as emergency teams continued relief operations across several affected provinces. The announcement comes after nearly a week of persistent rainfall triggered landslides, widespread inundation and dangerous conditions that have disrupted daily life for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed that fatalities were linked to different incidents, including landslides and electrocution, as floodwaters surged into communities and damaged homes and infrastructure. Local authorities have urged residents to avoid downed power lines, fast-moving water and unstable slopes, while teams work to restore essential services in the worst-hit districts.

The southern provinces experience annual seasonal rainfall, but officials said the intensity of the latest weather system has led to unusually high water levels in several areas. Emergency agencies have deployed rescue boats, temporary shelters and medical assistance, while monitoring river levels and drainage routes to prevent further damage.

Rising Death Toll Across Southern Communities

The Thailand floods death toll reflects the scale of the disruption as water continues to move through low-lying and coastal districts. Local authorities have reported challenges reaching residents in remote areas due to blocked roads and ongoing landslide risks. Search teams have been clearing debris and assessing areas where power outages and communication failures have slowed response efforts.

Officials said they are working with municipal leaders to track missing persons and offer support to families who have lost homes or livelihoods. Schools in several provinces have suspended classes, and some hospitals have redirected patients after floodwaters reached nearby buildings. Though water has begun to recede in certain districts, meteorological forecasts warn that scattered rain may continue through the week.

Government Mobilises National Relief Operations

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been briefed on the situation, with provincial governors instructed to prioritise evacuation readiness and rapid assistance to vulnerable communities. The Interior Ministry and Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation have coordinated distribution of drinking water, food supplies and temporary bedding, while engineering units reinforce riverbanks and drainage channels.

Thailand’s National Water Command Centre has been tracking the storm system since last week, issuing alerts to residents in flood-prone zones and urging caution for those travelling through landslide-risk areas. Local media reported that rescue teams are using flat-bottom boats to transport elderly residents and people with disabilities from inundated homes to temporary shelters, where medical staff are conducting health checks.

Authorities said the situation remains fluid, particularly in districts located near mountain ranges where saturated soil increases the likelihood of additional landslides. Damage assessments are underway to determine the scale of losses to agriculture, local businesses and public infrastructure, including roads and power networks.

Seasonal Weather Pattern Intensifies Regional Impact

Southern Thailand typically experiences heavy rainfall between October and December, driven by the northeast monsoon and occasional tropical weather systems moving across the Gulf of Thailand. While the country manages seasonal flooding almost every year, the most recent events have led to significant disruption across multiple provinces within a short period of time.

Meteorologists have noted that urbanisation and land-use changes can increase runoff in densely populated areas, creating challenges for drainage and water management. Thailand has worked in recent years to expand flood-control infrastructure, including retention basins, canals and pumping stations. However, prolonged rainfall can overwhelm these systems when rivers swell and water accumulates faster than it can be redirected.

Officials said they are monitoring the weather closely and will update evacuation advisories if conditions worsen. The government has encouraged residents to follow local announcements and avoid travelling through flood-affected routes unless necessary.

Community Support and Recovery Efforts Underway

Relief organisations and volunteers have been delivering supplies to flooded neighbourhoods, including essential medicines, dry food and sanitation kits. Local authorities have also requested donations of clean bedding, portable generators and water filtration equipment for shelters that may need to operate for several more days.

Public health officials are advising residents to avoid standing water due to the risk of waterborne illness and to exercise caution when using electrical equipment in damp conditions. Hospitals have prepared emergency wards for potential injuries linked to debris clearing and rescue operations.

As cleanup continues, many communities face uncertainty about returning home, with some properties still submerged or structurally unsafe. Officials are surveying damaged houses to determine eligibility for government assistance, while agricultural workers assess losses to livestock and crops during the peak harvest season.

For now, authorities say the priority remains protecting residents and restoring access to essential services. Further updates are expected as assessments progress and weather patterns develop in the coming days.
