Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Eggs Sickens Over 70 Across Seven States

More than 70 people in seven states have fallen ill due to a salmonella outbreak traced back to eggs distributed by a California-based company, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed.

On Friday, August Egg Company issued a recall of 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs sold under various brand names, warning they may be contaminated. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shared the recall notice, urging consumers and businesses to take immediate action.

What You Need to Know About the Outbreak

So far, 79 people have been sickened, and 21 of them have required hospitalization. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported. The affected eggs were sold at restaurants and retailers across Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming.

Some of the stores carrying the recalled eggs include major retailers like Walmart, Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raleys, Food 4 Less, and Ralphs.

Why Salmonella is a Serious Concern

Salmonella infections can cause a range of symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain—even in healthy individuals. For young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems, the infection can lead to severe, sometimes life-threatening complications.

What August Egg Company is Doing About It

In a statement to the FDA, August Egg Company emphasized that it is not currently selling fresh shell eggs. The company has been diverting all eggs to an egg-breaking plant for over 30 days, where eggs are pasteurized to kill any harmful pathogens.

“Our internal food safety team is conducting a stringent review to identify how this happened and to prevent future issues,” the company said. “We are fully committed to correcting this situation and ensuring it never happens again.”

What Should You Do?

If you have eggs from this recall at home or in your business, the CDC advises throwing them away or returning them to the store where you bought them. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to potential salmonella contamination.

Stay tuned for updates as health officials continue to monitor the situation and work to protect public safety.

FDA Issues “Deadly” Recall on Tomatoes Sold in 3 Southern States

If you recently bought tomatoes in Georgia, North Carolina, or South Carolina, it’s time to check your kitchen. A serious recall is now underway, and the FDA has labeled it the most urgent kind—Class I—meaning the contaminated product could lead to severe illness or even death.

What’s Going On?

The recall was first issued on May 2, but things have since escalated. The tomatoes in question may be contaminated with salmonella, a bacteria that can cause serious health complications—especially in vulnerable groups like young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

The tomatoes were distributed by Williams Farms Repack LLC, based in Lodge, South Carolina, and sold to wholesalers and distributors under the H&C Farms Label between April 23 and April 28.

Where Were the Tomatoes Sold?

The recalled tomatoes ended up in:

Georgia

North Carolina

South Carolina

What Tomato Sizes and Lots Are Affected?

Here’s what to look for on packaging labels:

5×6; Lot Code: R4467

6×6; Lot Codes: R4467, R4470

Combo, 25-pound box; R4467

4×4, 2-layer; R4467

4×5, 2-layer; R4467

60-count, 2-layer; R4467

60-count, 18 pounds loose; R4467, R4470

XL, 18 pounds loose; R4467

3-count trays; R4467

Why This Is Serious: Understanding Salmonella

Salmonella isn’t something to take lightly. According to the CDC, symptoms usually begin 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and may include:

Diarrhea

Fever

Abdominal cramps

While many people recover without treatment, in some cases—particularly among vulnerable populations—the infection can lead to hospitalization and life-threatening complications.

Worryingly, freezing or drying the tomatoes won’t kill the bacteria. Salmonella can survive for weeks in dry environments and months in moist ones.

So Far, No Reported Illnesses—But Stay Cautious

As of the FDA’s latest update on May 28, no illnesses or deaths have been reported. Still, the agency isn’t taking any chances.

Bought These Tomatoes? Here’s What To Do

The FDA is urging consumers:

Don’t eat the recalled tomatoes.

Return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, or safely discard them.

Feeling sick after eating them? Contact your healthcare provider right away.

Stay safe, stay informed—and always double-check your produce when recalls are announced. For ongoing updates, visit the FDA’s recall website.

Former Ohio State and Penn State WR Julian Fleming Seriously Injured in Tragic ATV Crash That Killed Girlfriend

Former Ohio State and Penn State wide receiver Julian Fleming was seriously injured Friday evening in a devastating ATV accident in Pennsylvania that took the life of his girlfriend, Alyssa Boyd.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the crash occurred just after 8 p.m. when Fleming was driving the ATV with Boyd as a passenger. Suddenly, a deer jumped into their path, causing a collision that changed their lives forever.

Details of the Crash

Police reports confirmed that neither Fleming nor Boyd were wearing helmets or safety gear at the time of the accident. Fleming sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Guthrie Troy Community Hospital for treatment. Tragically, Boyd, 23, suffered extensive injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities found a recently deceased deer nearby, matching the damage to the ATV.

Remembering Julian Fleming’s Football Journey

Julian Fleming, 24, is no stranger to the spotlight. A Pennsylvania native and highly touted recruit, Fleming was a five-star prospect in the 2020 class. Ranked as the No. 14 overall player nationally and the top wide receiver recruit, he originally committed to Ohio State in May 2019.

Fleming played four seasons with the Buckeyes, recording 79 receptions for 963 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2024, he transferred to Penn State, where he added 14 catches for 176 yards and a touchdown.

His standout college season came in 2022, with 34 receptions, 533 yards, and six touchdowns, ranking third on Ohio State behind standout receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka.

A Community in Mourning

The news of the crash has sent shockwaves through the football community and beyond, as friends, fans, and teammates rally to support Fleming during this difficult time. Alyssa Boyd, remembered fondly by those who knew her, leaves behind a legacy of love and heartbreak.

This tragic accident is a sobering reminder of the importance of safety precautions and the fragility of life. Our thoughts are with Julian Fleming and all those affected by this heartbreaking event.

Measles is Highly Contagious – Here’s What You Need to Know to Stay Safe

Health officials in New Jersey are urging anyone who attended last week’s Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium to watch for measles symptoms. This comes after it was confirmed that an infectious person was present at the event.

While there’s no confirmed measles outbreak in New Jersey, the U.S. and parts of North America are seeing a rise in cases this year — including hundreds of infections in West Texas. This surge comes as vaccination rates, which protect 97% of people after two doses, have been dropping.

Measles outbreaks are especially common in places like schools and daycares. For example, three public schools in western North Dakota recently sent all unvaccinated students home for 21 days after exposure, following state law.

Here’s a simple guide to understanding measles and how you can protect yourself and your loved ones.

What’s Going On with Measles in the U.S.?

Most children in the U.S. get vaccinated before starting school, but more people are skipping shots for personal or religious reasons. This has caused outbreaks across 30 states so far this year, with over 1,000 cases and 11 states reporting outbreaks (three or more linked cases).

The largest outbreaks are in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Canada and Mexico are also seeing significant increases.

What Is Measles?

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even breathes. It mainly affects children but can infect anyone.

“On average, one infected person may pass measles to about 15 others,” says Scott Weaver, a virus expert. “Very few viruses spread this easily.”

Symptoms start in the respiratory tract and then spread throughout the body. Early signs include a high fever, runny nose, cough, and red, watery eyes. A distinctive red rash appears a few days later, starting on the face and spreading downward. When the rash shows up, the fever can spike above 104°F.

There’s no specific cure for measles, so treatment focuses on easing symptoms and preventing complications.

Can Measles Be Deadly?

While most people recover, measles can be serious, especially for unvaccinated individuals. About 1 in 5 unvaccinated Americans with measles end up hospitalized. Complications include ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, and, rarely, swelling of the brain (encephalitis), which can cause lasting damage.

Pregnant women without immunity risk premature birth or low birth weight babies.

“Children are most vulnerable to severe illness,” says Weaver. Pneumonia is the leading cause of measles-related deaths.

How Can You Protect Yourself?

The best protection is the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella). The first dose is recommended at 12-15 months old, and the second between 4-6 years old.

Before the vaccine was developed in the 1960s, nearly everyone caught measles. The vaccine is safe, effective, and has decades of proven success.

“We could stop outbreaks if 95% of the population were vaccinated,” Weaver explains. “Unfortunately, many areas have fallen below this crucial threshold.”

Vaccination rates have dropped since the COVID-19 pandemic, putting communities at higher risk.

Do You Need a Booster Shot?

Generally, people who got both MMR doses are protected for life. Testing for immunity is possible, and a booster may be recommended if antibody levels are low or if you are in an outbreak area.

Adults who received a live vaccine in the 1960s don’t need revaccination. But those who got an earlier, less effective killed-virus vaccine before 1968 should get at least one MMR dose now.

People who had measles before or were born before 1957 usually have immunity and don’t require vaccination.

If you have underlying health issues or live with someone at risk, talk to your doctor about whether a booster shot is a good idea.

Bottom Line:

Measles spreads fast but is preventable. Staying up to date with the MMR vaccine is the safest way to protect yourself, your family, and your community.

If you attended the Shakira concert or have concerns about exposure, monitor symptoms closely and consult your healthcare provider.

Stay informed. Stay safe.

Massive Earthquake Strikes Myanmar and Thailand, Killing at Least Three and Causing Widespread Devastation

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday, causing widespread destruction and killing at least three people in Bangkok. The quake, with an epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock, leaving devastation in its wake.

The full extent of casualties and damage remains unclear, especially in Myanmar, where an ongoing civil war and tight media controls make information scarce. However, early reports indicate significant destruction, with numerous buildings collapsing in multiple cities. Images from Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, reveal destroyed government housing and emergency teams pulling victims from the rubble.

The Myanmar government has issued urgent calls for blood donations, particularly in the hardest-hit regions, as hospitals struggle to treat the injured. Infrastructure damage, including cracked roads, collapsed bridges, and a burst dam, raises concerns about how rescuers will reach affected areas in a country already grappling with a humanitarian crisis.

Near Bangkok’s popular Chatuchak market, a 33-story building under construction crumbled, engulfing the area in a massive dust cloud. Eyewitness videos showed panicked onlookers screaming and running for safety. At least three people lost their lives in the collapse, while 90 others remain missing, according to Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. Rescuers have so far pulled seven survivors from the wreckage.

As the earthquake struck, the sound of sirens filled central Bangkok, and major transport systems, including the city’s elevated rapid transit and subway, were temporarily shut down. The earthquake’s impact was unexpected in the Thai capital, which sits on a river delta and is considered at moderate risk for seismic activity.

Many residents and visitors were caught off guard by the quake. April Kanichawanakul, an office worker in Bangkok, initially mistook the tremors for dizziness before realizing what was happening. She and her colleagues rushed down ten flights of stairs, waiting outside for confirmation that it was safe to return.

Tourist Fraser Morton, who was inside a Bangkok mall, described the terrifying experience: “All of a sudden, the whole building started moving. People screamed and panicked. I tried to walk calmly at first, but when the building really started swaying, people were running down the escalators in the wrong direction.”

In Mandalay, Myanmar, the quake caused widespread destruction, including the collapse of the Ma Soe Yane monastery and damage to the city’s former royal palace. A 90-year-old bridge in the Sagaing region also collapsed, cutting off crucial transport routes.

The earthquake’s effects extended beyond Myanmar and Thailand, reaching China’s Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. Reports from Ruili, a border city in China, indicate building damage and injuries. Videos show debris-strewn streets and emergency teams transporting the injured to hospitals. In the city of Mangshi, 100 kilometers northeast of Ruili, the tremors were so strong that people struggled to stand.

The Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations are mobilizing aid, but downed power lines and infrastructure damage make access to affected areas challenging. Julie Mehigan, head of Asia, Middle East & Europe for Christian Aid, emphasized the dire situation: “This disaster has left people in desperate need of water, food, and shelter. Myanmar was already facing severe conflict and displacement before this heartbreaking earthquake.”

Myanmar’s military-led government declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Naypyidaw and Mandalay, though the country has been under emergency rule since 2021.

As rescue operations continue, authorities are bracing for further aftershocks and potential structural collapses. With Myanmar’s political instability and Thailand’s unexpected devastation, recovery efforts will be a long and arduous process. The world watches as these nations come to terms with the disaster and work toward rebuilding shattered communities.

59 Dead, Over 150 Injured in Devastating North Macedonia Nightclub Fire

A massive fire ripped through Club Pulse, a nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, early Sunday, leaving 59 dead and 155 injured. Authorities suspect that pyrotechnics triggered the blaze, causing the roof to catch fire during a concert by a local pop group.

Tragedy Unfolds

The fire broke out at approximately 2:30 a.m., Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski confirmed. Video footage captured chaos inside the club as young concertgoers scrambled to escape through thick smoke while musicians pleaded with them to evacuate immediately.

Authorities have so far identified 39 of the deceased. Meanwhile, dozens of families anxiously awaited updates on their loved ones outside hospitals. Among them was Dragi Stojanov, who received the heartbreaking news that his only son, 21-year-old Tomce, had perished in the fire.

“He was my only child. I don’t need my life anymore,” Stojanov said in anguish. “One hundred and fifty families have been devastated.”

Emergency Response and International Support

Hospitals across the country, including in the capital, Skopje, are treating the injured, many of whom have sustained severe burns. Multiple volunteer organizations have joined the relief effort.

Health Minister Arben Taravari announced that 118 people remain hospitalized and that offers of assistance have poured in from neighboring Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Serbia. “We are making every effort to save as many lives as possible,” Taravari stated, visibly shaken.

A Nation in Mourning

This tragedy is among the worst in recent memory for North Macedonia, a country of fewer than two million people. President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova visited burn victims and their families at a hospital in Skopje. “It’s terrible… hard to believe how this happened,” she said, her voice breaking. “We must give these young people courage to continue.”

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski expressed his grief in an online post: “This is a difficult and very sad day for Macedonia. The loss of so many young lives is irreparable, and the pain of the families, loved ones, and friends is immeasurable.”

Investigations and Legal Actions

Local media reports indicate that Club Pulse operated in a former carpet warehouse, a single-story building whose roof partially collapsed due to the fire. Police have cordoned off the site for forensic examination, and state prosecutors are leading the investigation.

State prosecutor Ljubco Kocevski confirmed that several individuals were being questioned, but the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities are also reviewing the nightclub’s licensing and safety measures. One person has already been arrested in connection with the fire, though officials have not disclosed further details.

Global Condolences

Leaders from across Europe have extended their condolences. The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, expressed deep sadness, stating that the 27-nation bloc “shares the grief and pain of the people of North Macedonia.”

Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also sent their sympathies. “I wish those who were injured a speedy recovery. Ukraine mourns alongside our (North) Macedonian friends on this sad day,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.

A Grim Reminder

Deadly nightclub fires caused by pyrotechnics have occurred before. In 2015, a similar tragedy struck the Colectiv club in Bucharest, Romania, killing 64 people. This latest disaster in North Macedonia serves as another painful reminder of the importance of strict fire safety regulations.

Authorities continue their investigation into the fire’s cause, as the nation struggles to come to terms with its devastating loss.

Naples Residents Camp Out After 4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Amid Ongoing Seismic Activity

Residents of Naples and its surrounding areas were forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in parks and cars after a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck early Thursday morning. The tremor, which hit the densely populated Campi Flegrei region just before 1:30 a.m. local time, has heightened fears following weeks of intense seismic activity.

Authorities reported structural damage to several homes and vehicles as debris fell across the region. At least 15 individuals received medical treatment at local hospitals. The earthquake is part of an ongoing series of tremors in the area, with over 1,813 seismic events recorded in February alone, ranging between magnitudes of 0.3 to 3.9. In the past week, nearly 300 quakes, some measuring between 2 and 3 magnitude, have been detected.

The seismic activity is centered around a vast caldera formed by an eruption of the Campi Flegrei super volcano over two million years ago. The caldera extends 125 miles under the Bay of Naples, reaching the city’s western limits and the islands of Capri and Ischia. The most affected area, the Campi Flegrei “red zone,” is home to approximately 500,000 people.

The Italian Fire Brigade and Red Cross responded to aid those who spent the night outdoors, fearful of aftershocks. Schools remained closed Thursday morning as authorities assessed the situation.

Despite the growing concerns, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reassured the public that there is no imminent risk of eruption from Mt. Vesuvius or the Campi Flegrei super volcano. Experts have also clarified that Mt. Vesuvius, famous for the catastrophic eruption that buried Pompeii in 79 A.D., is unrelated to the current seismic activity.

Scientists classify the current ground movements as “positive bradyseism,” a phenomenon in which the earth’s surface slowly rises, causing cracks in buildings and infrastructure. Giuseppe De Natale, a research director at INGV, explained that the pressure beneath the surface could be caused either by magma intrusion or degassing from the magma chamber located about five miles underground.

“The shallow rocks cannot sustain high levels of pressure,” De Natale warned. “If the pressure increases too much, complete fracturing of the rocks could occur, which is generally a precursor to a volcanic eruption.”

A similar event occurred in 1984, when the ground rose by 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) before subsiding.

Amid the anxiety, some businesses are attempting to lighten the mood. Local restaurants have started offering “seismic discounts” based on earthquake magnitudes—such as 17% off for a 1.7 magnitude tremor. Peppe Minieri, owner of A’ Scalinatell restaurant, humorously promised free meals for customers who remain seated during tremors instead of running outside.

“Obviously, it’s a provocation to make light of the situation we’re experiencing,” Minieri told the Italian daily Corriere Della Sera.

Despite reassurances from scientists, concerns for public safety remain high. Experts warn that the “red zone” should be permanently evacuated as a precaution. The Campi Flegrei super volcano last erupted in 1538, forming a new coastal bay. While an eruption is not considered imminent, the frequent seismic swarms highlight the need for an effective evacuation plan—especially given the challenge of relocating half a million residents in an emergency.

As tremors continue to shake the region, Naples residents remain on edge, hoping for stability while preparing for the worst.

West Texas Measles Outbreak Doubles to 48 Cases

The measles outbreak in Gaines County, Texas, has doubled in size, reaching 48 confirmed cases, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) on Friday. The outbreak, first identified in late January, has been steadily growing.

Rising Case Numbers Across Counties

Gaines County: 42 cases (the epicenter of the outbreak).

Yoakum County: 2 cases.

Lynn County: 1 case.

Health officials warn that more cases are expected due to the highly contagious nature of measles.

Who is Affected?

All cases involve unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status.

Most infections are in children aged 5 to 17 years.

Symptoms appeared within the last three weeks.

Hospitalizations: 13 patients have required hospital care.

Measles Spreading Beyond Texas

The first case involved an unvaccinated teenager.

The vaccination status of the other two cases remains unknown.

Health officials suspect the New Mexico cases are linked to the Texas outbreak.

What is Measles?

This is one of the highest vaccine exemption rates in Texas, increasing the risk of outbreaks.

Efforts to Control the Outbreak

The Texas health department is collaborating with:

2 Million Doughnut and Pastry Products Recalled Over Potential Listeria Contamination

FDA Warns of Possible Health Risks Linked to Popular Baked Goods

A massive recall has been issued for approximately 2 million doughnut and pastry products due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall, initiated on January 7, was upgraded to Class II on February 5, according to a report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Affected Brands and Products

The recalled items were manufactured by FGF Brands, an Indiana-based pastry wholesaler that supplies baked goods across the United States and Canada. Some of the affected products are typically sold at Dunkin’ locations, one of the most popular coffee and doughnut chains.

The FDA classifies a Class II recall as a situation where exposure to the affected product may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, with a remote chance of serious health consequences.

Health Risks: What You Need to Know

The recall was issued due to the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria known to cause listeriosis—a serious foodborne illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

Listeria is the third leading cause of foodborne illness-related deaths in the U.S.

1,600 Americans contract listeriosis annually, and about 260 die from it.

Common symptoms include:
Mild Cases: Vomiting, muscle aches, and fever (similar to food poisoning).
Severe Cases: Headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.

Certain groups face a higher risk of severe illness, including:
Pregnant women (can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth)
Newborns
Elderly adults (65 and older)
Individuals with weakened immune systems

FGF Brands and Dunkin’ Response

PEOPLE reached out to FGF Brands and Inspire Brands (Dunkin’s parent company) for comment on Saturday, February 8, but no immediate response was received.

Growing Concern Over Food Recalls

This recall follows a wave of recent food safety concerns, including:
Broccoli recall (January 2025) – Also due to potential listeria contamination.
Boar’s Head meat recall (July 2024) – Affected multiple deli meat products.

Public concern over food safety is rising. A December 2024 survey by CivicScience found that:
81% of Americans are at least somewhat concerned about food recalls.
31% are “very concerned.”
16% have actively avoided a product due to recent recalls.

Stay Informed & Stay Safe

Consumers are advised to check their purchased baked goods, follow FDA recall guidelines, and discard or return any affected products.
