North America’s busiest commuter rail system shut down on Saturday after thousands of workers on New York’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) launched a strike following failed contract negotiations with transport authorities. The disruption has halted service for hundreds of thousands of passengers and intensified concerns over economic and infrastructure pressures in the United States ahead of the Memorial Day travel period.

The strike involves approximately 3,500 workers represented by five unions, including engineers, machinists and signal operators, according to union officials and reports from Reuters and Associated Press. The walkout marks the first major strike on the LIRR in more than three decades and has suspended operations across the commuter network connecting New York City with Long Island suburbs.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which operates the rail line, said negotiations continued until shortly before the strike deadline but failed to produce an agreement on wages and benefits. Union representatives argued that workers had gone several years without sufficient pay increases while inflation continued to erode purchasing power.

Economic Pressure Expands Across New York Region

Transport analysts warned that the shutdown could trigger severe traffic congestion and broader economic disruption across the New York metropolitan region. The LIRR normally carries close to 300,000 passengers daily, making it one of the most critical commuter systems in North America.

State officials urged commuters to work remotely where possible, while limited shuttle bus services were introduced for essential workers. However, transportation experts noted that replacement services would be unable to absorb normal commuter volumes. Community discussions on transit forums also reflected concerns about gridlock and overcrowding on alternative routes.

The strike comes during a period of heightened pressure on urban transport systems in several major economies, where labor disputes have increasingly intersected with inflation concerns and post-pandemic commuting shifts. Analysts said the dispute highlights broader tensions between public-sector budget constraints and union wage demands in large metropolitan regions.

Political Fallout Intensifies

The labor dispute has also generated political tensions at both state and federal levels. New York Governor Kathy Hochul called for renewed negotiations and warned that a prolonged shutdown could significantly affect regional commerce and mobility.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump criticized state leadership over the failed negotiations, while unions argued that recommendations from federal mediation efforts had not been fully implemented. Reports indicated that earlier intervention attempts by federal authorities failed to secure a compromise before the strike deadline.

The dispute is unfolding as political leaders face increasing scrutiny over infrastructure reliability and the rising cost of living. Economists warned that an extended shutdown could affect businesses, sporting events and regional tourism, especially with major public gatherings scheduled in New York City during the holiday period.

Regional Transport Stability Under Scrutiny

Transport specialists said the strike may influence future labor negotiations across other US transit systems, particularly as unions seek stronger wage protections against inflation. The shutdown also renewed debate over the resilience of commuter infrastructure in one of the world’s largest urban economies.

Union officials stated that the strike would remain in place until a revised agreement is reached, while the MTA said further negotiations were expected in the coming days.

Massive Blackout Brings Spain and Portugal to a Standstill

Barcelona, Spain — A massive, unexpected blackout swept across Spain and Portugal on Monday, paralyzing major cities, stranding thousands of commuters, and leaving millions without power, internet, or access to cash machines.

The outage, which began just after noon, triggered chaos across the Iberian Peninsula. Offices and public services shut down, trains halted mid-journey, and even emergency services had to scramble as backup generators kicked in.

“This is unprecedented,” said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez during a national address. “We have never had a complete collapse of the system.”

According to Sánchez, Spain’s power grid lost 15 gigawatts — around 60% of national demand — in just five seconds. Eduardo Prieto, head of operations for Spain’s electricity distributor Red Eléctrica, described the event as “exceptional and extraordinary.”

By late Monday night, about half of the electricity supply had been restored. Sánchez promised that full power would return across Spain’s 48 million residents by the end of Tuesday.

Authorities are still investigating the cause, though officials in both Spain and Portugal have ruled out a cyberattack. Teresa Ribera, a European Commission vice president, called it “one of the most serious episodes recorded in Europe in recent times.”

The blackout hit hard in Madrid, Lisbon, Barcelona, and other major cities. Offices closed, traffic lights went dark, and massive traffic jams formed. In Barcelona, civilians were seen directing traffic themselves to keep roads moving.

Public transportation ground to a halt. Over 35,000 passengers had to be evacuated from more than 100 stalled trains across Spain. As of late Monday, 11 trains still had passengers awaiting evacuation.

At Madrid’s main bus stops, desperate travelers tried to hitch rides to the airport, holding up handmade signs asking for help.
“I’ve been here for almost three hours. My family just arrived, and I can’t even contact them,” said Jessica Fernández, one of many stranded commuters.

Subways in both Spain and Portugal also shut down, forcing thousands to walk or search for scarce taxis and buses.

Hospitals quickly switched to backup generators. Gas stations stopped operating, and mobile networks largely collapsed, making it almost impossible to make calls or use data.

The Spanish army was mobilized to distribute generators and essential supplies to the hardest-hit regions after an emergency National Security Council meeting.

Portugal’s government, meanwhile, held an emergency cabinet meeting. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro confirmed that the problem appeared to have originated outside Portugal, and that Lisbon was working closely with Spain to restore power.

To help speed recovery, Spain started importing electricity from Morocco and France and boosted production from hydroelectric and thermal power plants.

Spanish airports switched to backup systems. Flight delays were reported, but most operations continued. In Lisbon, however, terminals closed temporarily, leaving tourists waiting outside without information.

Spain’s Parliament shut down for the day. Matches at the Madrid Open tennis tournament were suspended. Meanwhile, courts, public offices, and ATM networks across both countries ground to a halt.

In cities like Barcelona, many residents poured into parks, beaches, and restaurant terraces to wait it out, with some trying to find a silver lining.
“We are lucky. Some people are stuck underground in the metro. At least we’re talking more to each other,” said Monste Cortés, who spent the afternoon chatting with neighbors.

As evening fell and hours without communication dragged on, anxiety spread.
“I can’t even call my boss because nothing works,” said Helen Osorio, a shop clerk in Barcelona.

In Terrassa, an industrial town near Barcelona, shops selling battery generators quickly sold out as residents rushed to find ways to stay connected.

Police in Portugal reported an uptick in emergency calls, especially from people trapped in elevators and subway cars.

Despite the disruptions, there were no reports of serious injuries. Both governments assured citizens that restoring power and stabilizing the grid remained their top priority.

At a glance:

Blackout affected over 60 million people across Spain and Portugal.

15 gigawatts of power lost in seconds.

No evidence of cyberattack so far.

Power restoration expected by Tuesday evening.

A series of explosions rocked central Israel on Thursday, targeting three parked buses in what authorities believe may have been a militant attack. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the blasts.

The explosions occurred on a tense day, as Israel was already in mourning after Hamas returned the bodies of four hostages from Gaza as part of a ceasefire deal. The bombings, reminiscent of attacks during the Palestinian uprising of the early 2000s, were a rare occurrence in recent years.

Explosives Found on Multiple Buses

Police spokesman Asi Aharoni confirmed that explosives were discovered on two additional buses, though they did not detonate. The five bombs found across the buses were identical and equipped with timers, prompting Israeli bomb squads to work on safely defusing the unexploded devices. Investigators in protective coveralls carefully examined the burnt-out remains of the buses, which had been parked in a parking lot in Bat Yam, a city located just outside Tel Aviv.

Miraculous Escape from Injury

The mayor of Bat Yam, Tzvika Brot, expressed relief, calling it a “miracle” that no one was harmed, as the buses had been parked after completing their routes. Ofir Karni, the head of the bus company, confirmed that all drivers had been ordered to stop and conduct thorough inspections before resuming operations.

Investigation Underway

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that he was receiving regular updates from his military secretary. The Shin Bet internal security agency has taken over the investigation. Police spokesman Haim Sargrof noted that investigators are working to determine whether a single individual placed explosives on multiple buses or if there were multiple suspects involved. The explosives used in Thursday’s attacks were reportedly similar to those found in the West Bank, though specific details were not disclosed.

The West Bank Context

Since Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023, which ignited the ongoing war in Gaza, Israel’s military has been carrying out frequent raids targeting Palestinian militants in the West Bank. In response, Israel has severely restricted Palestinian access to Israel from the occupied territory.

A group claiming to be a branch of Hamas’ Qassam Brigades from Tulkarem in the northern West Bank posted a message on the Telegram app, vowing revenge for “martyrs” as long as “the occupation is on our lands.” While the group did not directly claim responsibility for the bus explosions, the statement pointed to rising tensions in the region.

Security Measures and Ongoing Operations

The Israeli military, continuing its security operations in the West Bank, imposed additional movement restrictions and sealed off certain areas as part of its crackdown on suspected militants.

Despite the explosions, Bat Yam’s mayor urged residents to maintain their daily routines but remain vigilant. Schools will remain open on Friday, and public transport services will continue as usual.

The investigation into the attack continues, with authorities working to uncover the full scope and motive behind this troubling incident.
