Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan escalated sharply after authorities in Kabul accused Islamabad of carrying out a devastating airstrike in the Afghan capital that officials say killed hundreds of civilians, dramatically raising the stakes in a fast-expanding cross-border conflict.

Afghan officials said the strike late Monday hit a large medical facility in Kabul used to treat people suffering from drug addiction. Government spokesmen claimed the attack destroyed significant portions of the complex and left at least 400 people dead with roughly 250 others injured. Pakistan rejected the accusation, insisting its air operations targeted militant infrastructure rather than civilian sites.

The dispute — reported by The Associated Press and other international media — underscores the rapid deterioration of relations between the two neighboring states, whose forces have exchanged fire repeatedly along their shared frontier over the past several weeks.

Civilian Casualty Claims Intensify Strategic Tensions

Afghanistan’s deputy government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said the strike occurred around 9 p.m. local time and caused severe damage to the hospital, a facility described by officials as capable of housing around 2,000 patients.

Images circulated by local television channels showed emergency workers moving through burning debris while rescuers attempted to retrieve victims under dim light and ongoing fires. Afghan officials said teams were still working through the rubble hours later to extinguish flames and recover bodies.

The Taliban government’s chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid condemned the attack in public statements, accusing Pakistan of deliberately striking a civilian medical facility and describing the incident as a violation of international humanitarian norms.

Islamabad Rejects Allegations, Points to Militant Targets

Officials in Islamabad swiftly denied the accusation. Pakistan’s government said its military operations were aimed at militant support infrastructure and weapons storage facilities connected to armed groups operating from Afghan territory.

According to Pakistan’s information ministry, the strikes targeted locations in Kabul and eastern Afghan provinces believed to be used by insurgents responsible for attacks inside Pakistan. Authorities insisted the operations were conducted with precision and avoided civilian locations.

A spokesman for Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif dismissed Kabul’s allegations as unfounded, arguing that Afghan leaders were attempting to deflect attention from what Islamabad describes as cross-border militant activity.

Border Clashes Push Rivalry Toward Open Conflict

The competing narratives emerge as military exchanges between the two countries intensify along their contested frontier.

Earlier Monday, Afghan officials said fighting along the border left at least four people dead inside Afghanistan. The clashes form part of a broader confrontation that has unfolded over several weeks, marking the most severe violence between the neighbors in years.

Pakistan has accused Afghanistan’s Taliban administration of allowing militants linked to the Pakistani Taliban to operate from Afghan soil. Kabul has repeatedly denied those claims.

Pakistani authorities say militant groups based across the border have carried out attacks targeting civilians and security forces inside Pakistan. Afghan officials counter that recent Pakistani airstrikes have killed civilians and violated Afghan sovereignty.

International Community Warns of Expanding Security Threat

The crisis unfolded only hours after the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution urging Afghanistan’s rulers to intensify efforts against terrorist groups operating within the country.

The measure also extended the mandate of the U.N. political mission in Afghanistan, United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), for an additional three months.

Diplomats warn that escalating hostilities between Kabul and Islamabad risk destabilizing a region where militant networks — including groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State — have historically maintained a presence.

Military Claims and Counterclaims Deepen Confrontation

The war of narratives between the two governments has expanded alongside the battlefield confrontation.

Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar recently said Pakistan’s military had killed hundreds of Afghan Taliban fighters in recent operations, a claim Kabul strongly disputes.

Afghan officials say their forces have inflicted significant casualties on Pakistani troops during border clashes, though those figures remain difficult to independently verify.

Meanwhile, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari accused Afghanistan’s Taliban administration of crossing a “red line” after drones allegedly launched from Afghan territory injured civilians in Pakistan.

Regional Stability Faces Growing Pressure

The current confrontation traces back to late February, when cross-border strikes and retaliatory attacks shattered a ceasefire that had been brokered months earlier through mediation by Qatar.

Since then, both sides have expanded their operations, including airstrikes and artillery exchanges that have drawn concern from international observers.

With neither government signaling a willingness to de-escalate and accusations continuing to mount, the confrontation between Afghanistan and Pakistan increasingly threatens to evolve from localized border clashes into a broader regional security crisis.

Powerful Car Bomb Hits Islamabad Court, Killing at Least Five and Injuring Dozens

A car bomb exploded outside a district court in Islamabad on Tuesday, killing at least five people and wounding 13 others, officials and state media reported. The attack adds to growing concerns about militant activity in Pakistan, including a separate foiled assault on a military cadet college.

Blast Strikes Court Area

The explosion occurred outside a heavily frequented district court in the Pakistani capital, damaging several parked vehicles. According to Pakistan TV, most casualties were passersby or individuals attending court hearings. The blast was reportedly heard miles away, raising alarm across the city.

Two security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that a car bomb caused the explosion. Islamabad police have not yet released an official statement on the incident, and no group has claimed responsibility.

Foiled Taliban Attack at Cadet College

Earlier Tuesday, Pakistani security forces thwarted a Taliban attack targeting cadets at an army-run college in Wana, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the Afghan border. The assault began Monday evening when a suicide car bomber and five militants attempted to storm the facility.

Local police chief Alamgir Mahsud said two attackers were killed quickly, while three managed to enter an administrative block before being cornered. Army commandos participated in the clearance operation, which continued intermittently into Tuesday. The administrative block was separate from the main dormitories housing hundreds of cadets and staff.

The Pakistani Taliban, also known as TTP and separate from Afghanistan’s Taliban, denied involvement in the college attack. The group has grown more emboldened since the Taliban assumed power in Kabul in 2021, with many leaders and fighters believed to be taking refuge in Afghanistan.

Militant Threats and Historical Context

Pakistan has experienced a surge in militant attacks in recent years. The deadliest assault on a school occurred in 2014, when Taliban gunmen killed 154 people, mostly children, at a Peshawar army-run school. Military officials warned that Monday’s attempted attack aimed to replicate the Peshawar massacre.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have increased in recent months. Kabul criticized Islamabad for drone strikes on October 9 that killed several people in the Afghan capital and promised retaliation. Subsequent cross-border fighting resulted in dozens of deaths among soldiers, civilians, and militants before a ceasefire brokered by Qatar took effect on October 19 and remains in place.

Two rounds of peace talks have since been held in Istanbul, most recently on Thursday, but ended without agreement after Afghanistan refused to provide written assurances that the TTP and other militant groups would not use Afghan territory to target Pakistan. A previous ceasefire in 2022 between Pakistan and the TTP collapsed after the group accused Islamabad of violations.

Security and Public Concern

The Islamabad car bomb and foiled Taliban attack underscore ongoing security challenges in Pakistan, particularly in regions bordering Afghanistan. Authorities have heightened vigilance around sensitive installations, including courts, schools, and military facilities. Analysts warn that militant groups continue to exploit regional tensions and porous borders to conduct attacks, making stability in Pakistan increasingly precarious.

Tensions Escalate as India and Pakistan Trade Drone Strikes, Accusations, and Heavy Fire

The already fragile relationship between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan has taken a dangerous turn, with both countries exchanging drone strikes, cross-border fire, and heated accusations following a deadly missile attack earlier this week.

Indian Drone Strikes Spark Fresh Tensions

On Thursday, Pakistan’s military reported that India launched several Israeli-made Harop attack drones, damaging military infrastructure and injuring at least four Pakistani soldiers. One drone reportedly struck a military site near Lahore, while another fell in Rawalpindi, close to the capital. Debris from a downed drone also killed a civilian in Sindh province, according to Pakistani officials.

Pakistan’s army claims to have shot down 25 of the drones. Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif said during a televised statement that “the armed forces are neutralizing them as we speak.”

Meanwhile, India’s Defense Ministry confirmed the strikes, stating its forces had targeted Pakistani air defense radars and systems at multiple locations, including Lahore.

Pakistan Accuses India of Civilian Killings; India Blames Pakistan for Terror Attack

The aerial assault came just a day after Indian missiles hit several locations inside Pakistan, killing 31 civilians, according to Islamabad. India says the missile strikes were in direct retaliation for a brutal gun attack last month in Indian-administered Kashmir, which left 26 people dead—most of them Hindu pilgrims. New Delhi accuses Pakistan of being behind the assault, an allegation Pakistan firmly denies.

In a fiery speech, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed to avenge the missile strikes, warning of a potential escalation. “We will respond at an appropriate time,” said Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.

Kashmir Once Again at the Heart of Conflict

The disputed Kashmir region has once again become the flashpoint. Both nations have traded heavy artillery fire across the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the region. Pakistan claims it has killed 40 to 50 Indian soldiers during these exchanges. India has not confirmed the figure but did report one soldier killed by shelling on Wednesday.

India also accused Pakistan of trying to hit multiple military targets using drones and missiles. In response, Pakistan denied launching any missiles toward the Indian city of Amritsar, instead claiming that an Indian drone had crashed there.

Civilians have also paid a heavy price. Indian officials say 16 civilians were killed during cross-border exchanges of fire on Wednesday. Pakistan reports six civilian deaths in similar incidents.

Families Flee Border Areas

The rising violence has forced residents along the border to flee. In Pakistan-administered Kashmir, around 2,000 villagers have left their homes. Mohammad Iftikhar, a local resident, told reporters, “I’m helplessly leaving my home for the safety of my children and wife.”

Air Travel Disrupted

Amid the rising tensions, both countries have suspended flights across key regions. Over two dozen airports in northern and western India are affected, while Pakistan has halted operations in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, and Sialkot.

The Broader Picture

This flare-up is the latest in a long history of hostilities between India and Pakistan, largely centered on the contested Kashmir region. The two countries have fought three wars since independence—two of them over Kashmir—and countless smaller conflicts.

With both governments facing intense public pressure to show strength, analysts fear that rising nationalism and military posturing could push the region dangerously close to another full-scale conflict.

India and Pakistan Escalate Tensions After Kashmir Attack Leaves 26 Dead

SRINAGAR, India — Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following a deadly attack in Kashmir that killed 26 civilians. The fallout has triggered a wave of retaliatory measures on both sides, raising fears of further conflict in the region.

India, blaming Pakistan for the attack, revoked all visas for Pakistani nationals effective Sunday. Pakistani citizens currently in India have been ordered to leave before their visas expire. India also announced a series of additional punitive actions:

Reduction of diplomatic staff in both countries

Closure of the only operational land border crossing

Suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, a landmark agreement that has endured through multiple wars

Pakistan struck back by:

Closing its airspace to Indian-owned and operated airlines

Suspending all trade with India, including indirect trade through third countries

The attack, which targeted civilians in the disputed region of Kashmir, is being described as the worst in years. India claims the assault has clear “cross-border links” to Pakistan, though no public evidence has been presented. A group calling itself Kashmir Resistance claimed responsibility.

Pakistan has denied any involvement, condemning what it calls India’s “belligerent measures.” Islamabad warned that any attempt by India to halt or redirect river flows under the water-sharing agreement would be considered an “act of war.”

Top ministers in both countries have hinted at the possibility of military action.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said any aggressive move by India would receive a “tit-for-tat kinetic response.”
India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh pledged to find and punish both the perpetrators and their backers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also sent a strong message at a rally:

“We will identify, track, and punish every terrorist, their handlers, and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the earth.”

India’s suspension of the Indus Water Treaty — a World Bank-brokered agreement from 1960 that governs the use of shared rivers — is particularly significant. The treaty has survived two wars and a major border conflict. For Pakistan, where agriculture heavily relies on these rivers, any disruption could be devastating.

Pakistan responded by staging public protests, with demonstrators gathering in cities like Islamabad outside the Indian High Commission, demanding a strong response.

Since 2019, when Modi’s government revoked Kashmir’s semi-autonomous status, tensions have remained high. While a ceasefire was renewed in 2021, this recent attack has put that fragile calm at risk.

Experts warn the situation could spiral.
Ashok Malik, a former Indian foreign ministry advisor, noted that military retaliation is on the table.

“There’s space for kinetic action under the nuclear threshold,” he said.
Meanwhile, Praveen Donthi of the International Crisis Group cautioned that Modi’s tough talk may leave India with limited options if tensions continue to rise.

The attack also sent shockwaves through Kashmir itself. Typically, militant actions target security forces, not civilians or tourists. But this incident triggered a rare outpouring of public grief.

Locals held candlelight vigils, and many businesses shut down in protest and mourning.

“People here are in fear and panic,” said Manzoor Ahmed, a hotel owner. “This will scare off the few tourists we have left.”

Several funerals have taken place across Indian cities, with an atmosphere of national grief and rising anger.

Over 170 Arrested in Pakistan Following Attacks on KFC Outlets Amid Gaza War Protests

KARACHI/LAHORE, April 18 – In recent weeks, a series of mob attacks targeting KFC outlets across Pakistan have led to the arrest of more than 170 individuals, following growing anti-U.S. sentiment and protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Authorities in major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, confirmed at least 11 separate incidents where protesters, armed with sticks, vandalized KFC outlets. Police reported that 178 individuals were detained in connection with these attacks.

KFC, owned by U.S.-based Yum Brands, has not publicly commented on the situation. However, the violence has escalated following the heightened tensions surrounding the ongoing Gaza conflict. In Lahore, a KFC employee tragically lost their life in a shooting this week, though authorities have not determined if the incident was linked to the protests or stemmed from another motive.

In response to the unrest, authorities in Lahore have increased security at the city’s 27 KFC locations. Police have made arrests, including one individual associated with the Islamist group Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), though TLP has denied any involvement in organizing the protests. “We have urged Muslims to boycott Israeli products, but we did not call for any KFC protests,” TLP spokesperson Rehan Mohsin Khan clarified.

KFC outlets, long seen as a symbol of American influence, have been frequent targets of anti-U.S. protests in Pakistan, especially during times of political or military tension between the U.S. and Muslim-majority countries. The ongoing Gaza war, which began after Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has intensified these boycotts.

The conflict, which has seen over 51,000 Palestinian casualties, has fueled outrage across the Muslim world, with protests, boycotts, and acts of vandalism targeting U.S. brands. In Pakistan, major Western companies, including KFC, Coca-Cola, and PepsiCo, have faced consumer pushback due to their perceived ties to Israel or the U.S. government.

Earlier this month, Pakistani religious leaders issued calls for a boycott of products supporting Israel or the U.S. economy, while urging peaceful methods and discouraging property destruction. However, the recent violence suggests that these calls are not always heeded, raising concerns about the safety of foreign businesses in Pakistan.

The unrest has highlighted growing discontent over the Gaza conflict and the broader geopolitical tensions between Western powers and Muslim-majority nations, with Pakistan at the center of the storm.

Pakistan Military Ends Train Standoff: 21 Hostages and Four Troops Killed

Quetta, Pakistan – Pakistani security forces successfully ended a train hijacking by separatist militants on Wednesday, killing all 33 attackers after a tense day-long standoff. The military confirmed that 21 hostages and four security personnel lost their lives during the operation.

On Tuesday, militants from the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) ambushed the Jaffar Express, which was traveling from Quetta, Balochistan, to Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The attackers blew up railway tracks and fired rockets at the train carrying 440 passengers, leading to a hostage crisis.

Military spokesperson Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated that special forces carried out the final operation with precision, ensuring that no civilians were harmed during the last phase.

“Today, we freed a large number of people, including women and children,” Chaudhry said.

Earlier in the crisis, the BLA had claimed to have executed 50 passengers and held 214 hostages, mainly security personnel. The group threatened to begin executions unless the government met its demand for the release of Baloch political prisoners and missing persons within 48 hours.

The BLA, the largest of several ethnic armed groups fighting for greater control over Balochistan’s mineral resources, has intensified its attacks in recent months, using new tactics to maximize casualties and target Pakistan’s military.

Junior Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry told Geo TV that the militants were wearing suicide vests and were positioned among the hostages, complicating the military’s response. He initially estimated that 70-80 attackers were involved in the hijacking.

Hundreds of troops, including air force and special forces units, were deployed for the operation. The final phase involved eliminating suicide bombers before troops moved from carriage to carriage to neutralize the remaining militants.

Muhammad Ashraf, a 75-year-old passenger, recounted the attack:

“I heard a loud explosion in the mountains, and suddenly, gunfire erupted. We lay on the floor while armed men stormed the train, checking our identities.”

Authorities said the militants were specifically searching for soldiers and security personnel among the passengers.

Government officials confirmed that 190 passengers had been rescued earlier, with over 50 taken to Quetta to reunite with their families. However, tensions flared as relatives of the hostages demanded accountability.

One distraught woman, whose son was among those held hostage, confronted provincial minister Mir Zahoor Buledi, asking:

“Why didn’t you stop the trains if they weren’t safe?”

Buledi assured the public that the government was working to enhance security measures in the region.

With the military operation concluded, questions remain about security lapses and the growing threat posed by separatist militants. The government has vowed to take stronger actions to prevent similar attacks in the future.
