Sardinian Village Invites Americans with $1 Homes and a Peaceful Lifestyle

An Italian village on the island of Sardinia is offering Americans the chance to relocate abroad by selling homes for as little as $1, especially for those looking to escape the political climate in the U.S. following the 2024 presidential election.

The historic town of Ollolai, nestled in the Sardinian countryside, has launched a new initiative called “Live in Ollolai,” aimed at attracting Americans seeking a more balanced lifestyle. According to the village’s website, it’s an ideal opportunity for those “worn out by global politics” and wanting to embrace a simpler life in a picturesque, tranquil setting.

While the village refrains from directly mentioning the recent election or any specific political figure, Mayor Francesco Columbo explained that the initiative is designed to meet the growing demand for relocation options post-election. “We know that many Americans are looking to leave the country after the election,” he told CNN. “This website was created to cater to their needs.”

Ollolai, which has seen a steady population decline over the past few decades (from 2,013 people in 1981 to 1,162 in 2024), offers the allure of an affordable and peaceful rural lifestyle. The town, located in the scenic slopes of Monte San Basilio, is known for its ancient traditions, including basket weaving, and offers access to stunning natural surroundings. Though not located near Sardinia’s famous beaches, Ollolai is surrounded by forests and enjoys a prime location in the island’s Blue Zone, a region known for its longevity and healthy living.

Homes in Ollolai can be purchased at prices ranging from as low as €1 (around $1.06) for properties in need of renovation, to more modern, move-in-ready homes priced up to €100,000 (about $105,973). The village plans to feature a list of available properties on its website soon. Additionally, qualifying digital nomads may receive free temporary housing, as part of the village’s efforts to attract remote workers.

Recognizing that relocating to another country can be complicated, Ollolai offers comprehensive support throughout the process. The town will assist potential buyers with everything from arranging property viewings to helping navigate Italian bureaucracy and finding contractors for renovations.

This isn’t the first time Ollolai has encouraged relocation through affordable housing. In 2018, the village offered abandoned homes for €1, provided buyers committed to investing about $25,000 in renovations within three years. After five years, buyers could sell the renovated property.

Last year, Ollolai introduced a digital nomad program, offering “almost free” accommodations to remote workers who contributed to the community. The program received overwhelming interest, with more than 18,000 applications.

Although the initiative isn’t intended to solve Ollolai’s depopulation issues, it aims to bring new knowledge, skills, and experiences into the community, making the town more widely known and accessible. “It’s a way to break down barriers and share the unique heritage and culture of the area,” the village’s website states.
