ITHACA, United States – Hundreds of Cornell University students, faculty members and supporters rallied on campus Monday to protest the university’s handling of an alleged 2024 sexual assault involving members of the Chi Phi fraternity.

The demonstration filled Ho Plaza and drew protesters from across the Cornell community, with participants demanding greater accountability from university administrators and stronger measures against sexual violence on campus. Protesters called for Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff’s resignation, changes to the university’s disciplinary system and revisions to its approach to sexual-consent policies.

The rally came amid renewed scrutiny of Cornell after a former student, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, filed a civil lawsuit alleging that she was sexually assaulted by several Chi Phi members in October 2024 after becoming incapacitated by alcohol and drugs.

The men named in the lawsuit have denied wrongdoing or disputed their alleged participation. No criminal charges had been filed in connection with the allegations at the time of Monday’s demonstration. A criminal investigation has since been reopened under New York Attorney General Letitia James, who was appointed special prosecutor by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Protesters demand changes from Cornell

The demonstration was organized by student groups and supported by faculty and community members. Protesters carried signs calling for accountability and stronger protections for survivors of sexual violence.

Among their demands were the expulsion or revocation of degrees of students they identified as being involved in the alleged assault, mandatory sexual-assault prevention training and trauma-informed training for university police. Some protesters also called for changes to Cornell’s disciplinary structure.

Protesters accused Cornell administrators of failing to adequately respond to the allegations and argued that the university’s disciplinary process did not impose sufficiently serious consequences.

Those accusations are contested. Cornell has said it conducted an investigation, sanctioned students and barred the Chi Phi chapter from campus. The university has also disputed claims that students accused in the case received only essays as punishment, saying that characterization does not accurately describe the consequences imposed.

The university’s disciplinary decisions involving individual students have not all been publicly disclosed, with Cornell citing student-privacy requirements.

Cornell administration faces mounting scrutiny

The protest followed a series of developments that have intensified pressure on Cornell.

The university has faced criticism over its handling of the 2024 allegations since Jane Doe filed her lawsuit in September. The case has drawn attention from state officials, members of Congress and student groups, while protesters have increasingly focused on whether Cornell’s disciplinary response was adequate.

Kotlikoff addressed the controversy in a video message released Oct. 3, saying Cornell’s administration and community “must do better.” He said the university would work to create an environment in which survivors feel safe reporting sexual assault, strengthen trauma-informed systems and investigate allegations rigorously and fairly.

Kotlikoff also said Cornell would examine the role of fraternities and sororities in campus life and support reforms to New York’s sexual-assault laws. Cornell’s Board of Trustees is expected to identify an outside law firm to conduct an independent review of the university’s handling of the case.

New York reopens criminal investigation

The university review is separate from the criminal investigation into the underlying allegations.

On Oct. 1, the New York Attorney General’s Office confirmed that Gov. Hochul had appointed the office as special prosecutor to investigate an alleged sexual assault that occurred at Cornell in October 2024.

James said her office would lead an investigation guided by the facts and the law and emphasized that people reporting crimes should expect them to be investigated fully and fairly.

The appointment followed renewed scrutiny of the handling of the original investigation by Cornell police and local authorities.

The criminal investigation and Cornell’s internal disciplinary process involve different standards and purposes. A university disciplinary finding does not itself establish criminal guilt, while the reopened criminal investigation has not resulted in a finding of guilt against any person.

Allegations remain subject to legal proceedings

The civil lawsuit filed by Jane Doe contains allegations that have not been adjudicated.

The lawsuit alleges that she was incapacitated after being given or consuming alcohol and drugs and was then sexually assaulted by several men associated with Chi Phi. Those allegations are disputed by the defendants.

JournosNews does not treat the allegations as established facts.

The distinction is particularly important as the case moves simultaneously through civil litigation, a renewed criminal investigation and scrutiny of Cornell’s internal disciplinary response.

Damage reported at administration building

The campus protests were preceded early Monday by damage to Cornell’s Day Hall, the university’s main administration building.

Windows and a glass door were damaged, while graffiti was painted on the building criticizing Cornell’s handling of the case. Cornell police responded to the scene, and the damage was later cleaned up.

The vandalism was separate from the larger afternoon demonstration, which was described in reporting as a large but generally orderly protest. Reuters estimated that several hundred students, faculty supporters and community activists participated, while The Washington Post reported that the crowd exceeded 1,000 people.

Accountability remains the central issue

For protesters, Monday’s demonstration was about more than the allegations involving one fraternity. Speakers argued that Cornell’s policies and disciplinary structures need broader reform to address sexual violence and survivor support.

Cornell has acknowledged that its response requires further work while maintaining that it took disciplinary action in the case.

The independent university review and the state criminal investigation now provide separate avenues for examining how the allegations were handled and what happened during the original investigation.

The outcome of those processes remains unresolved.

For Cornell, the immediate challenge is to address demands for greater transparency and accountability while maintaining due process for people accused of wrongdoing.

For New York authorities, the reopened criminal investigation will determine whether the available evidence supports criminal charges.

The Oct. 5 protest has therefore become a significant new development in the controversy, but it does not itself establish the truth of the underlying assault allegations or determine the outcome of either the criminal or civil proceedings.
