BYD Unveils Ultra-Fast EV Charging System, Rivals Gas Refueling Speeds
March 18, 2025 – Chinese auto and energy giant BYD has introduced a groundbreaking ultra-fast EV charging system, promising to charge electric vehicles nearly as quickly as filling up a gas tank.
A Game-Changer for EV Charging
BYD, China’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, announced Monday that its 1-megawatt flash chargers can fully charge its latest EV models in just five to eight minutes—a major leap forward in EV technology. The company plans to roll out more than 4,000 of these high-speed charging stations across China, aiming to eliminate “charging anxiety” among EV users.
“For EV adoption to truly replace gasoline vehicles, charging times must be as short as refueling times,” said BYD founder Wang Chuanfu.
A Surge in EV Adoption
Despite global concerns over charging times and range limitations, Chinese consumers have embraced EVs at an unprecedented rate. In 2024, sales of battery-powered and hybrid vehicles surged by 40%, reflecting China’s rapid shift toward greener transportation.
Tesla Takes a Hit as BYD Expands
BYD’s announcement appeared to shake the EV market, with Tesla’s stock dropping 4.8% on Monday. The company also began pre-sales of its newly upgraded Han L and Tang L models, reinforcing its aggressive expansion strategy.
In 2024, BYD narrowly overtook Tesla in battery-powered EV production, manufacturing 1,777,965 units compared to Tesla’s 1,773,443. BYD’s total output of “new energy vehicles”—including hybrids—reached 4.3 million, marking a 41% year-over-year increase.
The Technology Behind BYD’s Speedy Charging
BYD’s flash-charging system utilizes silicon carbide power chips with voltage levels of up to 1,500V, designed in-house. The company’s Blade lithium-iron phosphate battery, hailed as one of the world’s safest and most efficient EV batteries, is even used in some Tesla models.
The new chargers can deliver up to 400 kilometers (nearly 250 miles) of range in just five minutes, setting a new industry benchmark for fast charging.
BYD’s EV Lineup: From Budget to Luxury
While BYD is making strides in high-end EVs—with its latest premium models expected to cost around $40,000—it also dominates the budget market. Its Seagull EV, priced at just $12,000, has helped drive mass adoption in China.
Challenges Ahead for BYD
Despite its dominance, BYD faces some hurdles. A 2024 JD Power study on China’s New Energy Vehicles ranked BYD’s Seal and Song Plus models at the bottom in initial quality.
As the global EV race intensifies, BYD’s latest innovations could reshape the industry, but competition remains fierce.
