Bill Gates Opens Up: Philanthropy, Tech Billionaires, and Trump

Bill Gates‘ new memoir, Source Code: My Beginnings, was published today, offering a deep dive into his life, career, and philanthropy. As part of his book tour, Gates sat down for an interview with the BBC, where he shared insights on his charitable work, his childhood, and his interactions with President Donald Trump.

Giving Away Billions: Gates’ Philanthropic Mission

Since stepping down from Microsoft in 2008, Gates has dedicated his life to philanthropy. He estimates that he has given away over $100 billion, with $60 billion going to The Gates Foundation—an organization that has also received massive contributions from billionaire investor Warren Buffett.

Despite this enormous generosity, Gates insists that giving away his fortune has had little impact on his personal life.

“I made no personal sacrifice. I didn’t order fewer hamburgers or watch fewer movies,” he said.

His commitment to giving stems from lessons instilled by his mother, Mary Gates. She always emphasized that wealth comes with the responsibility to give back. Even during his early success, she worked to smooth out his rough social edges—going as far as confiscating clothes left on his bedroom floor and charging him 25 cents to get them back.

“I started wearing fewer clothes,” Gates recalled with a laugh.

While most of his fortune will go to philanthropy, Gates has set aside a small portion for his three children.

“In absolute terms, they’ll do well, but in percentage terms, it’s not a gigantic number.”

A Childhood of Hyperfocus: Gates and Autism

For the first time, Gates shares in his book that if he were growing up today, he believes he would be diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

The memoir describes his ability to hyperfocus, obsessive behaviors, and social struggles. His sister, Kristi, recalled:

“He was not a normal kid… he would sit in his room and chew pencils down to the lead.”

Despite these challenges, Gates sees his characteristics as an asset rather than a limitation.

“The positive traits for my career have been more beneficial than the deficits have been a problem for me,” he said.

At this stage in life, he sees no reason to seek a formal diagnosis.

Tech Billionaires and Trump: A Pragmatic Approach

Gates also addressed the growing coziness between tech billionaires and Donald Trump, with figures like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg donating to or working with the administration.

“You can be cynical,” he admitted, but explained his own reasoning for meeting with Trump for a three-hour dinner in December.
“He’s making decisions about global health and how we help poor countries, which is a big focus of mine now.”

Unlike some of his tech peers, Gates’ involvement appears to be driven by practicality rather than political alignment.

The Fight Against Misinformation and Vaccine Myths

When asked about the growing problem of misinformation online, Gates expressed deep concern. He criticized Meta’s decision to abandon fact-checking, saying:

“I’m not that impressed by what’s going on, but I also don’t have the answers.”

He acknowledged the difficult challenge of defining the line between truth and falsehood in the digital age.

Regarding the rise of anti-vaccine rhetoric, particularly from figures like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Gates didn’t hold back:

“He’s misleading people.”

Social Media and Teen Mental Health

Gates also weighed in on the impact of social media, arguing that online networks have worsened social anxiety and approval-seeking behaviors.

“Social networking, even more than video gaming, can absorb your time and make you worry about other people approving you.”

He praised Australia’s recent ban on social media for children under 16, calling it

“a smart thing.”

Returning to His Roots

The BBC documentary The Making of Bill Gates—now available on iPlayer in the UK—follows Gates as he revisits his childhood haunts in Seattle, reminiscing about his upbringing and early career.

Meanwhile, his memoir, Source Code: My Beginnings, is available now.

Final Thoughts

From giving away billions to meeting with world leaders, tackling misinformation, and reflecting on his childhood, Bill Gates remains one of the most fascinating figures of our time. Whether you admire his philanthropy or question his interactions with politicians, one thing is clear: Gates is still shaping the world in his own way.
