New England Patriots Hire Former Super Bowl Champion Mike Vrabel as Head Coach
The New England Patriots have officially named Mike Vrabel as their new head coach. The announcement was made Sunday morning, just a week after Patriots owner Robert Kraft fired Jerod Mayo following the team’s season-ending win over the Buffalo Bills. Mayo, in his first season as head coach, finished with a 4-13 record.
Vrabel, who spent eight seasons as a player with the Patriots, was the team’s preferred choice. During his time with New England, Vrabel was part of the first three Super Bowl-winning teams and earned a spot in the Patriots’ Hall of Fame in 2023. His deep connection with the franchise and his success as a coach in Tennessee made him an ideal candidate.
Other candidates for the head coach position included former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, former Houston Texans offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. However, Vrabel’s long-standing association with the Patriots and his impressive coaching career in Tennessee ultimately secured him the role.
At 49 years old, Vrabel arrives with a strong coaching resume, having served as head coach of the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023. Over six seasons, he compiled a 56-48 record, including three consecutive playoff appearances and an AFC Championship game appearance in 2019. His leadership in Tennessee solidified his reputation as a coach who could relate to players, a key trait that Kraft values.
Mayo, who had been an assistant coach under Bill Belichick, was seen as a potential successor to the legendary coach. However, after a challenging first season with a young roster, Kraft determined that Mayo was not yet ready to be a head coach in the NFL. In contrast, Vrabel brings years of experience and a proven track record to the table.
Before rejoining the Patriots, Vrabel served as a consultant for the Cleveland Browns, but his contract expired, which opened the door for him to explore other opportunities. He also interviewed with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears, both of whom are still in search of coaches. While Vrabel was rumored to be a candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders job, he never interviewed for the position, despite his connection to Raiders minority owner Tom Brady.
Now, Vrabel returns to New England, where he will look to rebuild the franchise and restore its championship pedigree. With his leadership, the Patriots hope to rebound from a tough season and once again become a contender in the NFL.
