Verstappen Wins Bahrain GP in Malaysia as Antonelli Extends F1 Lead

SEPANG, Malaysia – Max Verstappen won the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit on Sunday, ending a long wait for his first Formula 1 victory of the season while championship leader Kimi Antonelli strengthened his advantage after George Russell’s late retirement.

Verstappen converted pole position into victory in a race disrupted by heavy rain, changing tyre conditions and multiple Safety Car periods. Antonelli finished second, 2.307 seconds behind, while Lewis Hamilton completed the podium for Ferrari after recovering from an early strategy setback.

The event was officially the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, with the race held at Sepang rather than Bahrain. Formula 1’s 2026 calendar lists the event as Round 16 of the championship.

Verstappen Breaks Through in Difficult Conditions

The race started after a significant delay caused by heavy rain. The opening laps were run in mixed conditions, forcing teams to make difficult decisions between intermediate and slick tyres.

Verstappen started from pole but initially lost positions to the Mercedes cars of Antonelli and Russell. He recovered as conditions evolved and regained the lead during a Safety Car restart.

From there, the Red Bull driver controlled the race through the changing conditions and late neutralizations to secure his first victory of the season.

The victory was also the first for Red Bull Ford Powertrains, the power-unit program introduced for the 2026 season.

Verstappen finished 2.307 seconds ahead of Antonelli after 55 laps. Hamilton was 4.919 seconds behind the winner in third, with Charles Leclerc fourth and Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar fifth.

Russell’s Late Retirement Changes the Title Picture

The biggest championship development came with five laps remaining.

Russell was running third and battling Antonelli for second place when his Mercedes stopped on the start-finish straight after 49 laps. The car was unable to continue, ending what had been a strong podium position.

The exact technical cause should not be described more specifically than the available evidence allows. The incident has been reported as a terminal problem affecting Russell’s Mercedes, while references to a suspected power-unit failure remain attributed rather than an established final diagnosis.

Russell therefore received no points from the race.

Antonelli, meanwhile, collected 18 points for second place. His championship advantage over Russell increased from 66 points before the race to 84 points afterward. The official Formula 1 standings show Antonelli on 320 points and Russell on 236.

Seven championship rounds remain after Bahrain, beginning with Singapore next weekend and continuing through the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

Hamilton Recovers From Early Strategy Gamble

Hamilton produced one of the race’s strongest recoveries.

Starting second, he chose slick tyres while several rivals remained on intermediates as the race began in wet conditions. The decision initially sent him deep into the field.

Formula 1 reported that Hamilton fell as low as 17th during the early phase before recovering as the track dried and the slick tyres became more effective. He eventually moved back into third, passing Hadjar in the closing stages.

Leclerc followed Hamilton home in fourth after Ferrari also recovered from the early conditions.

The result gave Ferrari a double podium and provided both drivers with significant points from a race in which their initial tyre choice had put them at a disadvantage.

Rain Transforms the Race

The unusual conditions produced one of the most strategically complicated races of the season.

The start was delayed by heavy rain, and the formation procedure itself was suspended after several drivers struggled to maintain speed in the conditions. When racing began, teams were divided over tyre choices.

The first Safety Car created an important opportunity for drivers on intermediate tyres to switch to slicks. Drivers who had started on slicks were initially exposed to the wet track but benefited later as conditions improved.

The changing conditions produced substantial movement through the field.

Norris, who had started fifth, eventually finished ninth after losing control of his McLaren while following the field behind the Safety Car. Oscar Piastri finished sixth, Liam Lawson seventh and Fernando Alonso eighth.

Rookie Arvid Lindblad completed the points-paying positions in 10th.

Verstappen’s Victory Does Not Change the Championship Leader

The victory significantly improves Verstappen’s position after a difficult season, but he remains well behind Antonelli in the championship.

Formula 1’s current standings list Antonelli first on 320 points, Russell second on 236, Hamilton third on 214, Charles Leclerc fourth on 191, Lando Norris fifth on 188 and Verstappen sixth on 188.

Verstappen’s win therefore narrows the gap to the drivers ahead of him, but it does not return him to championship contention at the top of the standings in any immediate mathematical sense.

The result instead gives Red Bull its first race victory of the 2026 campaign and provides Verstappen with a significant result heading into the final seven rounds.

Seven Races Remain

The championship now moves to Singapore for Round 17 on Oct. 9–11.

After Singapore, the calendar includes the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, with the season scheduled to conclude on Dec. 6.

Antonelli’s 84-point advantage gives him a substantial lead, but the remaining seven races still offer points opportunities for his rivals.

The Bahrain result therefore changes the championship calculation without deciding the title.

For Verstappen, it ends his wait for a 2026 victory. For Antonelli, second place and Russell’s retirement create a significantly larger cushion at the top. And for Russell, the late failure turns a likely podium finish into a major loss of championship ground.
