Barbra Streisand will no longer attend the closing ceremony of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival after sustaining a knee injury, festival organizers confirmed Sunday. The entertainment veteran had been scheduled to receive an honorary Palme d’Or during the event’s final ceremony in Cannes, France. Her absence removes one of the festival’s most anticipated appearances while preserving the planned tribute to her decades-long career.
According to a statement released by festival organizers, Streisand said doctors advised her not to travel as she continues recovering from the injury. The singer, actor, and filmmaker added that she was disappointed to miss the ceremony and reunite with colleagues during the festival’s 79th edition.
Cannes Maintains Honorary Tribute
Festival officials confirmed that the honorary Palme d’Or presentation will still proceed despite Streisand’s absence. The award recognizes her contributions across film, music, and directing, adding her name to a group of internationally recognized cinema figures honored by Cannes in recent years.
The 2026 festival has already featured multiple honorary recognitions. Peter Jackson received an honorary Palme d’Or during the opening ceremony, while John Travolta was unexpectedly honored ahead of the premiere of his directorial debut “Propeller One-Way Night Coach.”
Industry and Cultural Significance
Streisand’s planned appearance had been viewed as one of the festival’s major Hollywood moments amid a year with fewer large studio-driven premieres at Cannes. Industry observers noted that her recognition reflected the festival’s continued emphasis on honoring artists with influence across multiple entertainment sectors, including film, television, and music.
The honorary Palme d’Or remains one of Cannes’ highest distinctions outside the main competition. Organizers said the tribute to Streisand’s career will continue during the festival’s closing events later this week.
