Chile hands over stolen luxury watches belonging to Keanu Reeves to FBI

Written: July 29, 2025, 15:00 EDT

Chilean authorities have officially returned six valuable luxury watches stolen from actor Keanu Reeves to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), months after recovering them during a high-profile police raid in Santiago. The timepieces, including an engraved Rolex estimated to be worth at least $9,500, were part of a string of burglaries targeting affluent U.S. homes.

Stolen from Reeves’ Hollywood home

According to Chilean prosecutors, Reeves personally identified the watches as those taken from his Los Angeles residence in December 2023. The Hollywood Hills property had been one of several high-profile homes targeted during a wave of organized burglaries suspected to be carried out by transnational crime networks.

Marcelo Varas, an officer with Chile’s robbery investigation division, stated the combined value of the six watches recovered from Reeves’ case is approximately $125,000. The watches resurfaced in Santiago during a police operation that also uncovered stolen vehicles, iPhones, designer handbags, and other luxury goods.

Cross-border crime networks under investigation

The case forms part of a broader investigation coordinated between Chilean authorities and the FBI into organized crime groups believed to be operating across the Americas. These groups are allegedly responsible for a series of high-value burglaries in the United States, often targeting homes of celebrities, athletes, and wealthy individuals.

In April 2025, Chilean police announced the arrest of 23 suspects, all Chilean nationals, in connection with this crime wave. Authorities said the group operated by entering the U.S. illegally or on short-term tourist visas and then targeting upscale homes using advanced surveillance and break-in methods.

One such case involved Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, who was among the celebrity victims. Similar tactics and stolen luxury items point to possible connections between these incidents and the burglary at Reeves’ home, although authorities say investigations are still ongoing.

FBI steps in to facilitate return

The FBI is now overseeing the process of returning the recovered watches to Reeves in California. Chilean officials noted that the handover is part of ongoing efforts between the two countries to tackle transnational crime and the movement of stolen goods across borders.

While Chile has long been regarded as one of the more stable countries in Latin America, in recent years it has seen an uptick in transnational criminal activities, often involving well-organized crime rings with operations extending into the United States and Europe.

Diplomatic ties and security cooperation

The announcement coincided with the arrival of U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem in Santiago. While her visit was scheduled for bilateral meetings on transnational crime and security cooperation, the watch handover highlighted the broader issue of international theft rings.

Interestingly, Noem herself was previously the victim of a theft involving a Chilean national. In April 2024, her purse was stolen at a restaurant in Washington, D.C. The suspect in that case was later identified as an undocumented Chilean immigrant. That case drew widespread media attention in both countries and added urgency to bilateral cooperation on cross-border criminal issues.

Luxury theft and celebrity targets

The burglary trend involving international crime rings has exposed vulnerabilities in how U.S. homes—especially those belonging to public figures—are secured. In recent months, law enforcement agencies in several U.S. states have reported patterns involving short-term visa holders targeting affluent neighborhoods.

Reeves, a Canadian actor renowned for his roles in The Matrix, John Wick, and Speed, has not made a public statement regarding the return of the watches. However, law enforcement sources confirmed that he worked with authorities to positively identify each recovered item.

The luxury Rolex recovered in the Chilean raid was engraved, reportedly making it easier to authenticate its ownership.

Ongoing investigations into international theft rings

Officer Marcelo Varas said that while no definitive links have yet been made between the Reeves case and the wider network of burglaries, investigators are pursuing several leads.

“There’s a clear pattern emerging,” Varas said at a press briefing in Santiago. “We are continuing to work with the FBI and Interpol to identify connections between these incidents and determine if a coordinated criminal organization is behind them.”

The broader investigation is focused on the so-called “South American Theft Group” (SATG), an informal label applied by law enforcement to loosely organized gangs originating from various South American countries and suspected of conducting “hit-and-run” style thefts abroad.

Conclusion

The recovery and return of Keanu Reeves’ stolen luxury watches shine a spotlight on the growing challenge of transnational organized theft. As cooperation between U.S. and Latin American law enforcement strengthens, officials hope to dismantle the criminal networks responsible for targeting high-value homes across borders.

For now, the actor’s timepieces are safely on their way home, but the broader issue of international crime syndicates exploiting legal loopholes and visa systems remains a critical focus for authorities in both countries.
