Oblivion Remaster May Be Dropping Soon—Here’s What We Know So Far

Get ready, Elder Scrolls fans—a remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion could be arriving sooner than anyone expected. According to new reports and leaks, Bethesda’s beloved 2006 RPG might be getting a surprise release (a “shadow drop”) as early as the week of April 21.

Gaming journalist Jeff Grubb revealed the potential drop on the Game Mess Mornings show via Giant Bomb’s YouTube channel, suggesting the remaster could hit platforms any day now. Meanwhile, leaked images and data have surfaced online—most notably in a Reddit thread by user LiquidBurnss, and a follow-up post by KvasirTheOld, who claims to have found code related to the game’s trailer.

These leaks point to the remaster launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S (via Game Pass on day one), and PC (Steam). However, there’s no sign of a Nintendo Switch release, at least for now.

The remaster is reportedly being developed by Virtuos Games, and it’s rumored to run on Unreal Engine 5—a significant leap forward from the original Gamebryo engine used in the 2006 release.

Leaked screenshots allegedly pulled from Virtuos’ own website (and since removed) show the title “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered,” though some speculate it may feel more like a full-blown remake due to deeper changes. These include overhauls to combat and stealth mechanics, with some gameplay inspiration taken from the Dark Souls series.

So far, the evidence is convincing. The images appeared briefly on Virtuos’ official website, and the trailer code leak aligns with past industry patterns. Jeff Grubb’s track record also lends weight to the claims. Still, Bethesda has not issued any official confirmation, so until then, all details should be taken with a grain of salt.

That said, with all signs pointing toward a late-April release, fans won’t have to wait long to find out the truth.

If the remaster drops this month, it would beat out even the ambitious fan-made remake projects that have been in the works for years. And considering Oblivion’s legacy as one of the most influential RPGs of its time, a modern re-release could reignite interest in the franchise—just as hype for The Elder Scrolls VI continues to simmer.

Stay tuned. April might just be Oblivion’s month to rise again.
