Elon Musk’s Comments on Grooming Gangs “Misinformed,” Says Health Secretary Wes Streeting

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has criticized Elon Musk’s recent comments on the UK government’s handling of grooming gangs, calling his statements “misjudged and certainly misinformed.”

Musk, the tech billionaire and owner of X (formerly Twitter), has used his platform to accuse Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the UK Labour Party, of failing to prosecute gangs involved in the systematic grooming and abuse of young girls. He also called for safeguarding minister Jess Phillips to be jailed after she rejected calls for a public inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Oldham.

Streeting Responds to Musk’s Criticism

In response to Musk’s remarks, Streeting emphasized that the UK government is fully committed to tackling child sexual exploitation. Speaking to reporters while visiting a care home in Carlisle on Friday, Streeting said the government takes these issues “incredibly seriously.” He also invited Musk to collaborate with the government, suggesting that he could play an important role in addressing these challenges through his social media platform.

“We’re willing to work with Elon Musk, who I think has got a big role to play with his social media platform to help us and other countries tackle these serious issues,” Streeting said. “If he wants to work with us and roll his sleeves up, we’d welcome that.”

The UK Government’s Stance

While some members of the Conservative Party, including Kemi Badenoch, have called for a full national public inquiry into the issue of grooming gangs, they have also criticized Musk for spreading “factually inaccurate” information. The Tories distanced themselves from Musk’s calls for Phillips to be jailed, and some Conservative figures have accused him of sharing unverified claims on X without properly assessing their accuracy.

Alicia Kearns, the Conservative spokesperson for safeguarding, also criticized Musk for “drawing attention away from the survivors and victims” of these crimes, suggesting that his actions could be damaging. She further condemned Musk for supporting controversial figures like far-right activist Tommy Robinson.

Musk’s Role and Controversial Remarks

Musk, a known adviser to US President-elect Donald Trump, has been vocal about his concerns regarding the UK’s response to grooming gangs. His statements included criticism of Sir Keir Starmer, who, as the former director of public prosecutions, Musk accused of failing to properly prosecute these cases.

In addition to criticizing Phillips, Musk suggested she “deserves to be in prison” for rejecting the call for a national inquiry. Phillips, on the other hand, argued that a local inquiry, similar to those conducted in Rotherham and Telford, was a more appropriate response to the issues in Oldham.

Previous Investigations and the Call for Action

Streeting’s comments came amidst ongoing discussions about the handling of grooming gang cases in the UK. Over the years, multiple investigations have been conducted into the sexual abuse of girls and young women by organized gangs, with reports highlighting instances in Rotherham, Rochdale, Derbyshire, and Bristol. Inquiries into the response of Greater Manchester Police to historical abuse cases have also been carried out.

Despite these investigations, calls for further action continue. The Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse (IICSA), which published its final report in 2022, described child sexual abuse in the UK as an “epidemic” that leaves tens of thousands of victims in its wake.

Professor Alexis Jay, who led the inquiry, expressed frustration that many of the recommendations in the report have yet to be implemented. She emphasized the need for action rather than more consultations, research, or discussions.

“It doesn’t need more consultation, it does not need more research or discussion, it just needs to be done,” she said.

Criticism of Musk’s Focus

Health Minister Andrew Gwynne also weighed in, suggesting that Musk should focus on US politics, where he is expected to advise the incoming Trump administration on federal spending. He pointed out that numerous inquiries have already been carried out in the UK, adding that there comes a point where additional inquiries are unnecessary.

“If Elon Musk really paid attention to what’s been going on in this country, he might have recognized that there have already been inquiries,” Gwynne said during an interview with LBC Radio.

Conclusion

While Elon Musk’s comments on the issue of grooming gangs have sparked significant debate, the UK government has made it clear that it takes child sexual exploitation seriously and is committed to acting on previous inquiries and recommendations. Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s invitation to Musk to work together on these issues underscores the government’s willingness to collaborate with international figures in the fight against child abuse. However, the controversy surrounding Musk’s statements highlights the need for careful consideration of the facts and a focus on supporting the victims and survivors of these crimes.
