Clashes and Revenge Killings in Syria Leave Over 1,000 Dead in Two Days

A two-day surge of violence in Syria has claimed the lives of over 1,000 people, making it one of the deadliest episodes since the start of the Syrian conflict 14 years ago. The clashes between Syrian security forces and loyalists of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, followed by brutal revenge killings, have left a grim toll on both civilians and military personnel.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 745 civilians were killed, primarily through close-range shootings. Additionally, 125 government security force members and 148 militants from Assad-affiliated armed groups died. The violence has also resulted in widespread power and water outages in several regions, including the coastal city of Latakia.

Violence Escalates in the Aftermath of Assad’s Removal

The violence erupted Thursday, marking a dramatic escalation in the challenges facing Syria’s new government, which came to power three months ago after overthrowing Assad. Since then, the government has tried to control the chaos, blaming the violence on “individual actions” from remnants of Assad’s loyalists.

Sunni-Alawite Revenge Killings: A Deepening Sectarian Divide

The clashes have sparked brutal revenge killings, particularly between Sunni Muslim gunmen loyal to the new government and members of the Alawite sect, which had long supported Assad’s regime. These revenge killings began Friday, and reports from residents in Alawite-majority villages tell of gunmen shooting men in the streets, looting homes, and setting them on fire.

Atrocities in Baniyas: Residents Flee as Violence Unfolds

The town of Baniyas has been one of the worst-hit areas. According to residents, bodies were left strewn across the streets or left unburied on rooftops. One resident, Ali Sheha, who fled with his family, described the violence as “revenge killings” targeting the Alawite minority for Assad’s government’s past crimes. Sheha also described gunmen checking people’s IDs to identify their sect before executing them.

“They shot them in the streets, and homes were set on fire,” Sheha said. He also mentioned that foreign fighters and militants from neighboring areas participated in the attacks.

Massacre Confirmed: The Death Toll Mounts

The Syrian Observatory reported that these violence-fueled revenge killings ceased by Saturday morning, but not before claiming hundreds of lives. This marks one of the deadliest massacres in the Syrian conflict. Initially, the death toll was reported at more than 600, but it has now risen to over 1,000.

In the coastal village of Tuwaym, 31 victims of revenge killings were buried in a mass grave, including nine children and four women. This incident, along with others, further underscores the sectarian violence that has gripped the region.

Government Forces Regain Control; Violence Slowly Eases

Syria’s state news agency reported that government forces have managed to regain control over several areas previously held by Assad loyalists. Authorities have since sealed off roads leading to the coastal region to restore order. Despite this, violence continues to haunt the region, as communities continue to mourn the victims.

In Al-Janoudiya, a funeral was held for four Syrian security force members killed during the clashes, with dozens attending the ceremony.

International Outrage and Refugee Crisis

As violence continues to spread, many residents are fleeing to Lebanon for safety. Local authorities in Lebanon report an influx of refugees, though the exact number remains unclear. Many of the displaced are seeking shelter at the Russian airbase in Hmeimim, which has become a refuge for those fleeing the bloodshed.

French authorities have expressed deep concern over the recent violence. In a statement, France’s foreign ministry condemned the atrocities, particularly the sectarian violence against civilians and prisoners. France has urged the Syrian interim authorities to conduct independent investigations into these crimes.

Syria’s Complex Crisis: A Battle for Control

The latest round of violence began when government forces tried to detain a wanted individual near the coastal city of Jableh. They were ambushed by Assad loyalists, which ignited the clashes that followed.

Conclusion: A Conflict That Seems Far from Resolution

The clashes in Syria reflect the ongoing instability and the deepening sectarian divides within the country. While the new government has claimed to restore control in some regions, the violence continues to rage, and many lives have been shattered in the process. As the death toll rises and the violence spills into neighboring countries, international concern for the civilian population grows.

Assad Denies Planned Escape from Syria, Claims Relocation Was Russia’s Decision

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has denied claims that his departure from Syria was planned, according to a statement posted Monday on the Syrian Presidency’s Telegram account. This marks the first time Assad has publicly addressed the events leading to his ousting earlier this month.

In the statement, purportedly from Assad, he insisted that he stayed in Damascus until the final hours before being evacuated to Russia.

Assad: “Departure Was Unplanned”

“My departure from Syria was neither planned nor did it occur during the final hours of the battles, as some have claimed. On the contrary, I remained in Damascus, carrying out my duties until the early hours of Sunday, December 8, 2024,” the statement read.

Assad claimed he moved to Russia’s airbase in Hmeimim on the morning of December 8 at Moscow’s request. Later that day, Russian officials evacuated him and his family when the base came under attack.

Collapse of Damascus Triggered Evacuation

The statement further alleged that the fall of Damascus and the collapse of Syria’s state institutions left no alternative but to evacuate.
“With no viable means of leaving the base, Moscow requested the base’s command arrange an immediate evacuation to Russia on the evening of December 8. This took place a day after Damascus fell, following the collapse of the final military positions and the paralysis of all remaining state institutions,” Assad explained.

“No Plans to Step Down”

Assad denied considering resignation or seeking asylum before his evacuation.
“At no point during these events did I consider stepping down or seeking refuge, nor was such a proposal made by any individual or party. The only course of action was to continue fighting against the terrorist onslaught,” he stated.

Assad justified his departure by claiming his position became meaningless after Syria’s takeover by what he described as “terrorists.”
“When the state falls into the hands of terrorism and the ability to make a meaningful contribution is lost, any position becomes void of purpose, rendering its occupation meaningless.”

Asylum in Russia

Assad and his family were granted asylum in Russia for “humanitarian reasons,” according to Russian officials. They arrived in Moscow late on December 8, following their evacuation from the Hmeimim airbase.

While it remains unclear if Assad controls the Telegram account from which the statement was posted, the message provides insight into his perspective on the dramatic fall of his regime and his subsequent relocation to Russia.

US Man Freed After Months in Syrian Prison, Describes Dramatic Escape Amid Rebel Victory

A US citizen, who had been detained in Syria for months after entering the country on foot, was discovered by local residents near Damascus following a dramatic release. The man, later identified as Travis Timmerman, spoke to CBS News about his ordeal, detailing his escape as rebels overthrew the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Timmerman, who was arrested seven months ago, had been reported missing after his last known location in Budapest in May. He was found lying on a sofa, speaking with local reporters, shortly after rebels captured Damascus.

Rebels, including leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, vowed to shut down Assad’s notorious prisons and hold accountable those responsible for the torture and deaths of detainees. “We will pursue them in Syria and ask countries to hand over those who fled to achieve justice,” said al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani.

Timmerman described his dramatic release on Monday, the day after rebels toppled Assad’s regime. He was woken by the sound of his prison door being smashed open by two men armed with hammers. “I thought the guards were still there, so I was ready for more fighting, but once we got out, there was no resistance,” Timmerman said. He joined a large group of fellow prisoners attempting to reach Jordan, although he admitted to “moments of fear” during his escape.

Despite the uncertainty, Timmerman was well-received by local residents, who offered food and assistance as he made his way through the area. “They were coming to me, mostly,” he said, expressing gratitude for their help.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that the US is actively working to bring Timmerman home, although he withheld further details about the process.

Since Assad’s fall, thousands of prisoners have been released from Syrian jails. Videos have shown men, women, and even children emerging from overcrowded, windowless cells, often disoriented and unaware of the world outside. Timmerman, however, seemed to be in relatively good condition. He shared that he had access to a mobile phone during his detention and had even spoken to his family three weeks ago.

In a separate interview with NBC, Timmerman explained that he had crossed the mountains between Lebanon and Syria on a “pilgrimage” and had spent much of his time reading scripture.

The US has also asked Syria’s main rebel group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), to help locate and free Austin Tice, a US journalist missing since 2012. President Joe Biden has stated that the US believes Tice is still alive, though his whereabouts remain unknown.

Syria’s prisons, notorious for brutal conditions, have seen widespread torture and death. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates that nearly 60,000 people were tortured or killed in Assad’s jails. As the regime’s collapse continues to unfold, desperate families are searching for loved ones, with help from the White Helmets.

Raed Saleh, director of the White Helmets, said, “We’re looking for secret prisons in several areas of Damascus” and expressed concern over the many families still searching for the lost. Some of the most notorious sites, like Saydnaya prison, have been described as “human slaughterhouses,” where thousands endured unimaginable horrors.

Despite their efforts, the White Helmets have struggled to locate all survivors. “We’ve helped recover thousands of detainees,” Saleh said, but acknowledged that many are likely either dead or have been moved elsewhere. Teams continue to search with sniffer dogs and lock-breaking tools in a desperate bid to uncover more survivors.

Syrian Insurgents Push Toward Damascus in Rapid Offensive

Syrian insurgents have advanced into the suburbs of Damascus in a fast-moving offensive, seizing control of key cities and threatening President Bashar al-Assad’s hold on power. Opposition activists and rebel commanders reported significant progress on Saturday, marking a dramatic shift in Syria’s long-running civil war.

Insurgents Surround Damascus

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that insurgents are now active in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana, and Daraya. The opposition is also advancing from eastern Syria toward Harasta, while fighters from southern Syria march on the capital.

Rebel commander Hassan Abdul-Ghani announced via Telegram that the insurgents are in the “final stage” of their offensive, aiming to encircle Damascus. The Syrian military has redirected forces from southern provinces like Daraa and Sweida to defend Homs, a key city connecting Damascus to Assad’s coastal strongholds.

Rebels Gain Ground

In a stunning series of victories, the insurgents have captured several major cities, including Aleppo, once Syria’s second-largest city, and Hama. Thousands of civilians have fled as fighting intensifies, reigniting a conflict that had been relatively stagnant for years.

Abu Mohammed al-Golani, leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, told CNN that the goal of the offensive is to overthrow Assad’s government.

Civil War Escalates as Syrian Rebels Capture Key Cities – CBSNews/Photo

Assad Faces Waning Support

President Assad, already isolated, now finds his key allies preoccupied with other conflicts. Russia, Assad’s main backer, is heavily engaged in Ukraine, while Hezbollah, which previously bolstered Assad’s forces, has been weakened by prolonged fighting with Israel. Iran, another critical ally, has seen its regional proxies targeted by frequent Israeli airstrikes.

The rapid rebel advances present a significant challenge for Assad’s forces. If the insurgents capture Homs, they could sever the critical supply route between Damascus and the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus, where Assad retains strong support.

International Concerns

Qatar hosted a meeting of foreign ministers from Iran, Russia, and Turkey to discuss the escalating conflict. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s foreign minister, criticized Assad for failing to address Syria’s underlying issues during the lull in fighting. He warned that the country’s territorial integrity is at serious risk without urgent political intervention.

Strategic Losses

The Syrian government has now lost control of border crossings with Jordan and Iraq, leaving the Masnaa crossing with Lebanon as its only international gateway. U.S.-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have also captured large parts of Deir el-Zour, a strategically significant area linking Iran to the Mediterranean and a vital supply corridor for Iran-backed forces like Hezbollah.

The Road Ahead

With Damascus now within reach of insurgents and government forces stretched thin, the situation in Syria has reached a critical juncture. How the Assad government, its allies, and the international community respond will shape the next phase of this enduring conflict.

Syrian Rebels Seize Large Parts of Aleppo Amid Intense Fighting

Syrian rebels, led by the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have captured most of Aleppo in a dramatic offensive that poses the biggest threat to President Bashar al-Assad’s authority in years. This unexpected move forced Syrian government forces to retreat strategically as they prepare a counteroffensive to reclaim the city.

Rebels Enter Aleppo, Breaking Years of Stalemate

The Syrian military confirmed on Saturday that opposition forces had gained control of significant portions of Aleppo, marking the first major breach since the city was fully retaken by Assad’s forces eight years ago. The military described the insurgents as “terrorists” and stated that their entry into Aleppo had forced the army to redeploy to fortify defense lines and prepare for a counterattack.

Government forces assured that airstrikes and bombardments had slowed the rebels’ progress, preventing them from establishing firm positions. They promised to “expel the insurgents and restore full control over Aleppo and its countryside.”

Rebels Enter Aleppo, Breaking Years of Stalemate – France24/Phoito

Broader Regional Impact

This offensive reignites conflict in northwestern Syria, a region that has seen relative calm since 2020. The fighting comes amid broader regional tensions, including wars in Gaza and Lebanon. Syrian and Russian warplanes have reportedly targeted rebel positions in Aleppo’s suburbs, while opposition sources claim the offensive stems from escalating attacks on civilians in Idlib by Syrian and Russian forces.

Turkey, a known supporter of the rebels, is believed to have approved the operation, according to opposition sources. However, Ankara has publicly expressed concern over increasing instability and warned that such actions undermine de-escalation agreements.

Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Collapse

The Syrian Civil Defense, operating in rebel-held areas, reported airstrikes on residential neighborhoods, a gas station, and a school in Idlib, resulting in four civilian deaths and several injuries. State media noted that four civilians were killed in Aleppo when HTS shelled a student residence.

The humanitarian impact is severe, with reports of Aleppo’s streets deserted and public institutions shut down. Civilians have largely stayed indoors, fearing the crossfire.

Swift Rebel Advances

Rebel forces quickly advanced through Aleppo’s neighborhoods, capturing police buildings, key streets, and public spaces with minimal resistance. Images shared online showed fighters celebrating with the rebel flag and defacing posters of Assad.

In addition to Aleppo, rebels have reportedly seized the city of Maarrat al-Nu’man in Idlib, effectively bringing the entire province under their control. The town of Saraqib, strategically located southwest of Aleppo, has also fallen to opposition forces.

Death Toll and Regional Reactions

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, recent clashes have claimed 311 lives, including 183 rebel fighters, 100 government troops, and 28 civilians. Aleppo’s governor and top security officials have reportedly withdrawn from the city center.

Russia has pledged additional military aid to Damascus within 72 hours to support the counteroffensive. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov called the rebel attack a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and reaffirmed Russia’s support for restoring constitutional order.

Iran’s Role and Accusations

The offensive occurs as Iran faces regional setbacks amid the broader Middle East turmoil. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi accused the U.S. and Israel of backing the rebels’ actions, while opposition sources suggest the lack of Iranian manpower in Aleppo contributed to the rebels’ rapid advance.

Conclusion

The resurgence of fighting in Aleppo underscores the fragility of Syria’s stability and the complexities of a conflict shaped by international alliances and regional tensions. With government forces vowing to retake Aleppo, the coming days are likely to bring further bloodshed and uncertainty for the region’s civilians.

Russian and Syrian Jets Bomb Aleppo Amid Rebel Advances

Russian and Syrian jets are targeting rebel forces who have reportedly captured significant areas in and around Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city. Opposition fighters launched a surprise offensive in recent days, pushing into the heart of the city and disrupting major infrastructure.

Rebel Advances and Syrian Military Response

Opposition groups, including the Islamist militant faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, claim to control nearly half of Aleppo, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). In response, Syria’s military announced a “temporary troop withdrawal” to regroup for a counteroffensive against what it calls “terrorist” forces.

The rebels’ success has led to the closure of Aleppo airport and several key roads. Fierce battles in Aleppo and the neighboring Idlib region have reportedly resulted in dozens of Syrian soldiers being killed.

Russian Support and Escalation of Airstrikes

Russia, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has vowed to provide additional military aid to help Damascus repel the rebels. Syrian forces were reportedly instructed to conduct “safe withdrawals” from areas now under rebel control, according to military sources cited by Reuters.

The intensified conflict in northwestern Syria has also exacted a civilian toll. A United Nations official reported that airstrikes over the past three days killed 27 civilians, including eight children.

Rebel Justification and Turkey’s Role

Opposition fighters stated their campaign is a response to an escalation of airstrikes by Russian and Syrian forces on civilian areas in rebel-held Idlib. Turkey, which supports the rebels, has reportedly given tacit approval for their operations, according to opposition sources in contact with Turkish intelligence.

However, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oncu Keceli expressed concerns over the potential for increased instability. He also emphasized that recent attacks jeopardize existing de-escalation agreements.

Videos Reveal the Battlefield

Insurgents have shared videos online showing the use of drones in their advance, marking a notable development in their tactics. While the extent of drone involvement is unclear, geolocated footage shows armored vehicles near Aleppo’s outskirts and rebels celebrating at the city’s western entrance.

One video captures more than ten men, some armed, running through Aleppo’s streets. These visuals underscore the intensity of the ongoing urban battles.

Historical Context and Government Silence

This marks the rebels’ first return to Aleppo since 2016, when Assad’s forces, with backing from Russia, Iran, and allied militias, recaptured the city. The Syrian government has yet to comment on the rebels’ recent breach of Aleppo’s limits.

The situation remains fluid as both sides prepare for further confrontations, with civilians once again caught in the crossfire of escalating violence.
