Inauguration Live Updates: Donald Trump Sworn in as 47th President of the United States

In a historic moment, Donald Trump has officially been sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, marking the beginning of his second term in office. The inauguration ceremony, held on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, brings the country into a new chapter under Trump’s leadership following his victory in the 2024 election. Here are the latest updates from this monumental day.

Key Moments from Inauguration Day:

Swearing-In Ceremony:
At precisely 12:00 PM ET, Donald Trump took the presidential oath of office, administered by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. The ceremony took place in front of a packed crowd, including family members, dignitaries, and political leaders. Trump’s wife, Melania, stood by his side as he pledged to “preserve, protect, and defend” the Constitution of the United States.

Inaugural Address:
Following the swearing-in, President Trump delivered his inaugural speech, outlining his agenda for the next four years. He emphasized themes of economic growth, job creation, and American sovereignty. He also stressed the importance of unity and reaffirmed his commitment to “putting America first.” His speech, while focused on national priorities, also acknowledged the challenges the country faces in a divided political climate.

Security Measures in Place:
The Capitol and surrounding areas were heavily secured with tens of thousands of law enforcement officers, National Guard troops, and security personnel. Enhanced security protocols were in effect, ensuring the safety of attendees and the peaceful transition of power. The U.S. military played a prominent role, with military bands and ceremonial units participating in the event.

Crowd Reactions and Protests:
Supporters of President Trump gathered in large numbers around the Capitol and National Mall to celebrate the inauguration. Meanwhile, scattered protests took place in different areas of Washington, D.C., with demonstrators voicing opposition to Trump’s second term. Social media platforms were flooded with reactions, with supporters expressing excitement, while detractors criticized his return to office.

VIP Guests and Dignitaries:
Among the notable attendees were former presidents, political leaders, and foreign dignitaries. Former President Joe Biden, though not attending, issued a statement of goodwill, acknowledging the peaceful transition of power. Foreign leaders also extended congratulations to President Trump, offering their hopes for continued diplomatic relations with the U.S.

Trump’s Family and Key Figures:
The Trump family was prominently featured throughout the event. His children, Ivanka, Donald Jr., Eric, and Tiffany, along with their families, were present to witness the momentous occasion. Key figures from his first administration, such as Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, were also in attendance, signaling continued loyalty within his political base.

Public Reaction and Media Coverage:

Supporters Celebrate:
Trump’s supporters, many of whom had camped out for days, cheered with enthusiasm as their candidate officially took office for a second term. Flags bearing Trump’s name and slogans filled the air, and chants of “four more years” rang out in the crowd.

Opposition and Protests:
Despite the festive atmosphere among Trump’s supporters, many Americans voiced their displeasure with the result of the 2024 election. Across the country, protests and rallies erupted, with people calling for political change and greater unity in the face of a polarized nation. Social media has been filled with both support for the new president and passionate criticisms of his return to office.

A New Beginning:

Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th President of the United States marks a new phase in the country’s political journey. After a bitterly contested election and the turbulent years of his first presidency, Trump now faces the challenge of uniting the nation while implementing his policy agenda. As the nation looks forward to his second term, questions remain about how he will tackle key issues like healthcare, foreign relations, and climate change.

What’s Next:

Stay tuned for more updates as the inauguration day continues with celebrations, musical performances, and official events. The coming days will reveal more about President Trump’s immediate plans and the key issues he will prioritize during his second term. The eyes of the nation and the world are now firmly focused on Washington, D.C., as President Trump takes on the responsibilities of leading the United States once again.

Donald Trump Inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States

Key Highlights from the Historic Day

Swearing-In Ceremony:
Donald Trump will be officially sworn in as the 47th president of the United States today. Due to the extremely cold temperatures expected in Washington, D.C.—making it potentially the coldest Inauguration Day since 1985—the ceremony will be held indoors at the Capitol Rotunda. Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath of office.

A Star-Studded Event

Notable Guests Attending the Ceremony:
The guest list includes a mix of political leaders, former presidents, and prominent business moguls:

Former Presidents: George W. Bush, Bill Clinton (accompanied by Hillary Clinton), and Barack Obama.

Business Leaders: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg.

Others: TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Notable Absences:

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will not attend the event.

Michelle Obama will also be absent, though Barack Obama will represent their family.

Inaugural Address: A “Revolution of Common Sense”

In his first address of the new term, President Donald Trump will call for a “revolution of common sense,” emphasizing optimism, unity, and the start of a new chapter in American history.

Excerpts from Trump’s Prepared Remarks:

“I return to the presidency confident and optimistic that we are at the start of a thrilling new era of national success.”
“A tide of change is sweeping the country. My message to Americans today is that it is time for us to once again act with courage, vigor, and the vitality of history’s greatest civilization.”

While aides describe this speech as “unifying” and less confrontational compared to his 2017 “American carnage” address, Trump’s tendency to adlib could bring surprises.

Trump’s Agenda: Executive Orders and Pardons

On his first day, President Trump has pledged to sign nearly 100 executive orders addressing key campaign priorities, including:

Immigration reform.

Energy policy overhauls.

Federal government operations.

Additionally, Trump plans to issue pardons for some individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riot.

Performances to Celebrate the Occasion

Country music star Carrie Underwood will headline the inauguration by singing “America the Beautiful.” She expressed her honor in being part of the event, stating, “I love our country and am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together.”

Other Performers Include:

Victory Rally: Kid Rock, The Village People, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lee Greenwood, and Liberty University’s Praise Choir.

Liberty Ball: Jason Aldean and rapper Nelly.

Commander-in-Chief Ball: Rascal Flatts and Parker McCollum.

Starlight Ball: Gavin DeGraw.

A Historic Diplomatic Gesture from China

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng is attending the inauguration, marking a significant diplomatic gesture from Beijing. Observers view this move as a potential reset in U.S.-China relations. Although Han’s role in China’s political system is largely symbolic, his presence reflects Beijing’s interest in building goodwill with the Trump administration.

Biden’s Final Farewell

Outgoing President Joe Biden will attend the inauguration, marking the end of his term. In his farewell speech, Biden reflected on his achievements and expressed hope for America’s continued success.

“I’m so proud of how much we’ve accomplished together for the American people,” Biden said. “I wish the incoming administration success because I want America to succeed.”

Trump’s Bold Opening Moves

Throughout his 2024 campaign, Trump vowed retribution against his political opponents, leaving many watching closely to see how he acts in the opening hours of his second term.

While Trump’s rhetoric has often been combative, recent interactions with Joe Biden and other political figures have shown moments of civility. However, his critics remain cautious, anticipating his next moves.

A Cryptocurrency Twist: Trump and Melania Launch Meme Coins

The incoming first couple made headlines by launching their own meme cryptocurrencies.

Trump’s Coin: $TRUMP skyrocketed to $70 over the weekend but fell to $40 after Melania introduced $MELANIA. It later recovered to $60.

Melania’s Coin: $MELANIA debuted at $12 and continues to gain traction.

Both coins trade on the Solana blockchain, marking Trump’s unexpected embrace of cryptocurrency, despite his past criticism of Bitcoin.

What to Watch For

Trump’s inauguration promises a mix of spectacle, policy action, and the start of a new chapter for the United States. Stay tuned for updates as the day unfolds.

Musk’s Global Influence and the Dilemma for World Leaders as Trump Returns

Elon Musk’s recent moves in foreign politics are raising eyebrows among world leaders, creating a dilemma for them: how can they challenge the tech mogul without angering his new ally, Donald Trump?

While Musk may appear to be a mere provocateur enjoying his shock value, he is far more than just a social media figure. As the world’s richest individual with control over influential companies like Tesla and SpaceX, Musk wields significant global power. His strong presence on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) places him as a prominent populist force, unafraid to stir political tension and even challenge sovereign governments. This scenario only grows more complicated with Trump’s return to the White House in two weeks, as Musk is expected to play an advisory role in shaping U.S. policy, raising questions about where Musk’s influence ends and official government policy begins.

Musk’s foreign policy provocations are likely to stir controversy in Europe, where his actions are perceived as potential interference in other nations’ politics. There’s growing concern that Musk, a powerful advocate for far-right parties, might be acting at Trump’s direction, supporting the political upheaval that Trump’s America First agenda aims to ignite on the global stage. The question remains: will Musk become an unofficial ambassador for Trump abroad, or will he push his own foreign policy?

European Leaders Speak Out Against Musk

Musk’s vocal criticism of key political leaders in Europe, combined with his support for far-right movements, has spurred condemnation from some of America’s closest allies.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has openly criticized Musk for crossing a line after the billionaire accused him of being complicit in child abuse scandals.

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Musk is fueling an “international reactionary movement” by involving himself in elections across Europe.

Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed concern over Musk’s significant influence in foreign affairs, while Germany condemned his support for the pro-Russia far-right party, Alternative for Germany (AfD).

These actions reflect a broader trend where Musk aligns with far-right populism, a movement similar to Trump’s own rhetoric in the U.S. The increasing tension in Europe is partly due to the rise of discontent toward established governments, with many voters seeking alternatives to mainstream political figures. Musk’s endorsement of radical populist ideologies, which are often anti-immigration and anti-globalization, may be seen as an extension of Trump’s vision to challenge the status quo on the international stage.

The Growing Influence of Far-Right Politics

Musk’s support for far-right movements in Europe is gaining traction. In countries like France and Germany, nationalist parties like Marine Le Pen’s National Rally and the AfD are making significant strides, with the potential to disrupt traditional political dynamics. These movements often share Trump’s anti-immigration stance and rejection of internationalism, further aligning Musk and Trump’s political ideologies.

Musk’s interactions with European far-right leaders like Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who share many of Trump’s views, highlight the growing transatlantic partnership between populists.

Strained Relations with Traditional Allies

Musk’s political jabs are also complicating relations with traditional allies in Europe. His recent criticisms of key leaders like Starmer and Trudeau, alongside his growing influence in foreign politics, risk souring relationships with governments that are already wary of Trump’s aggressive foreign policy. In particular, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s political crisis has been exacerbated by Trump’s threats of a 25% tariff, which some believe hastened his resignation.

Leaders like Starmer and Trudeau face a delicate balancing act, trying to maintain ties with the U.S. while dealing with Musk’s disruptive influence. Despite the criticisms from figures like Starmer, the broader challenge for world leaders is maintaining good relations with Trump, who is expected to return to power in a few weeks.

Potential Conflicts of Interest Ahead

As Musk’s involvement in global politics continues to grow, the potential conflicts of interest between his business interests and U.S. foreign policy could create even more tension. Musk’s prominent role in facilitating communication between Trump and global leaders, such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, raises questions about where Musk’s private business interests end and official U.S. policy begins. Additionally, Musk’s commercial ties to China may clash with Trump’s hawkish stance on Beijing, presenting a complex scenario for the incoming administration.

In Trump’s first term, America became a force for global disruption, often driven by tweets and unpredictable actions. As Musk assumes a more prominent role in shaping U.S. policy in the second term, it’s clear that the next few years could be even more unpredictable and challenging for U.S. allies around the world.

Musk’s growing influence in global politics and his unpredictable actions are already complicating international relations, and the situation is expected to intensify as Trump takes office. World leaders will have to navigate this new reality, balancing the demands of maintaining relations with the U.S. while confronting Musk’s controversial interventions on the world stage.

Donald Trump Named Time Person of the Year for the Second Time

Time Magazine has named Donald Trump its Person of the Year for 2024, marking the second time the former president has received this honor.

“For marshaling a comeback of historic proportions, for driving a once-in-a-generation political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and altering America’s role in the world, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2024 Person of the Year,” said Time Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs in a letter to readers.

The Republican president-elect is set to celebrate the recognition by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, joined by several members of his family.

Trump was first named Person of the Year in 2016 after his surprising victory in the U.S. presidential election. Time’s tradition, which began in 1927 as “Man of the Year,” honors a person or movement that has had the greatest influence on global events, for better or worse.

Past winners include climate activist Greta Thunberg, former President Barack Obama, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Pope Francis, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Editors at Time select the Person of the Year, and this year, Trump was chosen from a list of 10 finalists, which also included Vice President Kamala Harris, the Princess of Wales, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk, a close ally of Trump, is set to lead an advisory board called the Department of Government Efficiency.

In announcing Trump as the winner, Time described his 2024 victory as a “stunning political comeback.” His campaign activated new voters, including young males, helping him secure a historic win. This victory marked his first popular vote win and saw him flip every swing state red.

Trump’s 2024 win is groundbreaking in several ways. He will become the oldest president in U.S. history, and he is also the first convicted felon to be elected to the nation’s highest office. Earlier this year, Trump was convicted by a New York jury on 34 counts of fraud.

Trump spoke to Time Magazine during interviews in April 2024, where he discussed his plans for a second term, which included reforming U.S. immigration and deporting millions of people.

Though Trump initially complained in 2015 when he wasn’t named Person of the Year, despite his presidential bid, he later called it a “great honor” after his 2016 victory. At that time, he shared his admiration for Time Magazine, saying it meant a lot to him, especially as someone who grew up reading it.

Despite this recognition, Trump has continued to criticize some of Time’s other choices, including last year’s selection of pop star Taylor Swift as Person of the Year.

Trump Vows to End Birthright Citizenship and Pardon Capitol Rioters

Trump’s First Day Plans Include Pardons for Capitol Rioters and Immigration Overhaul
President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to take swift action on his first day in office, promising pardons for those involved in the 2021 U.S. Capitol riot and proposing a major overhaul of the country’s birthright citizenship policy. In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump expressed support for pardoning individuals convicted for their roles in the Capitol attack, calling their conditions “hell” and describing their detention as “filthy” and “disgusting.”

“We’re going to look at independent cases, but I’ll be acting very quickly. First day,” he said.

Birthright Citizenship and Immigration Reforms
Trump also reiterated his commitment to ending automatic citizenship for children born in the U.S., a practice rooted in the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. He argued that birthright citizenship needed to be changed and suggested that it may require a vote by the public.

“We’re going to have to get it changed,” Trump said. “Maybe we have to go back to the people. But we have to end it.”

Regarding undocumented immigrants, Trump said he would follow through on his campaign promise to deport those living in the U.S. illegally, even if they have U.S.-born children. “I don’t want to be breaking up families,” he explained. “So the only way you don’t break up the family is to keep them together and send them all back.”

Executive Orders and Policy Plans
Trump indicated that his first day in office would be busy, with several executive orders planned on issues such as immigration, energy, and the economy. However, he avoided committing to a justice department investigation into President Joe Biden, though he did suggest some political adversaries, including lawmakers involved in investigating the Capitol riot, should face imprisonment.

NATO and Foreign Policy
On the international front, Trump hinted that the U.S. could pull back from NATO unless member nations meet their financial obligations and treat the U.S. fairly. He stated, “If they’re paying their bills and treating us fairly, I’d absolutely stay with NATO.”

Trump also indicated that Ukraine could expect less U.S. aid under his administration, saying they should “probably” receive less support.

Healthcare and Social Security
Trump addressed healthcare and social security in the interview, stating that he would not impose restrictions on abortion pills, though he left room for change. He also reiterated that he would not cut Social Security or raise its eligibility age, though he said he would work to make the system “more efficient.”

Tariffs and Economic Policies
Regarding his economic agenda, Trump said that while he would push for tariffs on imports from major U.S. trading partners, he could not guarantee that it wouldn’t lead to higher consumer prices. “I can’t guarantee anything. I can’t guarantee tomorrow,” he said.

Vaccine Controversy and Health Secretary Nominee
On health issues, Trump reignited a long-debunked theory about vaccines and autism. He suggested that his nominee for health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic, would investigate any potential link between childhood vaccines and autism, despite multiple global studies that have dismissed such a connection.

Trump’s First 100 Days
As Trump prepares for his return to the White House on January 20, 2025, his policy plans are set to reshape immigration, healthcare, and foreign policy. His promise to issue a flurry of executive orders reflects his commitment to enacting significant change on his first day in office.

Analysis: Biden’s Pardon for His Son Reflects a Shift in Presidential Behavior

President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, marks a significant moment in presidential politics, signaling a shift in how modern leaders wield clemency powers. Despite earlier assurances that he would not intervene in Hunter’s legal troubles, Biden reversed course, announcing the pardon on the Sunday after Thanksgiving—a time when public attention was elsewhere.

In a statement, Biden defended his decision, framing it as a response to what he described as relentless attacks on his son:

“There has been an effort to break Hunter—who has been five and a half years sober—even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me. Enough is enough.”

A Controversial Decision

Biden’s move has sparked sharp criticism, especially from Republicans, who accuse him of hypocrisy for breaking his promise and using presidential powers for personal reasons. Even within his party, dissent has emerged. Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed disappointment, saying the decision could tarnish Biden’s legacy.

Presidential pardons for family members are not unprecedented. In 2001, Bill Clinton pardoned his brother, Roger, for a 1985 drug conviction. However, Hunter Biden’s “full and unconditional” pardon is unusually broad, covering not only his convictions but also any potential charges for offenses committed between 2014 and the day of the pardon.

This timeline encompasses Hunter’s controversial stint on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma and other international dealings while Joe Biden was vice president. Republicans have long alleged that Hunter improperly leveraged his father’s influence for personal gain, claims the Biden family has denied.

Parallels with Trump’s Pardons

Biden’s explanation for the pardon mirrors language used by former President Donald Trump when he criticized the U.S. justice system. Trump, in his final days in office, issued a wave of pardons to close associates and allies caught in various investigations during his presidency. Among them was Charles Kushner, father of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who had been convicted of campaign finance violations, tax evasion, and witness tampering.

Critics argue that both Biden and Trump have used pardons as political tools rather than acts of grace. “With this decision, Biden has now made it easier for Trump to abuse the clemency power again,” said Professor John Crouch of American University.

A Changing Landscape for Presidential Pardons

Biden’s pardon is unlikely to carry significant political consequences for him personally, as his political career nears its conclusion. However, it may set a precedent with far-reaching implications. The established processes and norms governing presidential pardons appear to be eroding, leaving room for future leaders to wield this power more liberally.

If Vice President Kamala Harris had won the presidency, Biden’s pardon might have created a political headache for her transition team. Instead, attention has already shifted to the incoming Trump administration.

Trump, who is expected to grant clemency to allies prosecuted during Biden’s term, has criticized the Hunter Biden pardon, promising to reform the justice system and restore due process in his second term. He is also likely to pardon individuals convicted in connection to the January 6 Capitol riot, using Biden’s actions as justification.

An Erosion of Trust

Both Democrats and Republicans accuse each other of using the justice system for partisan purposes. This cycle of accusations erodes public trust in government ethics, with polls showing widespread skepticism across the political spectrum.

As the use of presidential pardons becomes increasingly politicized, the clemency power risks transforming into a tool for partisan advantage rather than a symbol of mercy and justice.

WASHINGTON, Nov 13 (Reuters) – In a gesture of political civility and transition, U.S. President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump met on Wednesday to discuss critical national security and foreign policy issues, particularly concerning Ukraine and the Middle East. Despite their well-known rivalry, the two leaders appeared composed as they sat side-by-side in the White House’s Oval Office, symbolizing a peaceful transfer of power.

A Constructive Dialogue on National Security White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre described the two-hour conversation as “cordial, gracious, and substantive.” Biden, 81, emphasized his stance on supporting Ukraine, arguing that it enhances U.S. security by stabilizing Europe and reducing the likelihood of American involvement in a European war. Meanwhile, Trump, 78, reiterated his campaign promise to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict swiftly, though he has not provided specific details on how he intends to achieve this.

In an interview with the New York Post, Trump mentioned a detailed discussion with Biden on Middle East issues, saying, “I wanted to know his views on where we are, and he was very gracious in sharing them.” Trump’s incoming administration will take office on Jan. 20.

Ensuring a Smooth Transition Both leaders underscored their commitment to a smooth transition. Biden welcomed Trump warmly, saying, “Looking forward to having a smooth transition – doing everything we can to accommodate you and ensure you have what you need.” Trump reciprocated, expressing gratitude for the gesture and describing the transition as “smooth as it can get.”

The meeting also included White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients and Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles. First Lady Jill Biden greeted Trump upon arrival and presented him with a handwritten letter congratulating Melania Trump, indicating her readiness to assist with the transition. Melania Trump, however, did not attend the meeting.

Partial Delays in Transition Process Despite the positive display, the transition process has encountered some delays. The White House noted that Trump’s team has yet to finalize agreements necessary for securing office space, equipment, and access to government officials and information, a requirement under the Presidential Transition Act. Brian Vance, a spokesperson for Trump’s transition team, confirmed that discussions are ongoing between Trump and Biden’s legal teams.

Valerie Smith Boyd, an expert on presidential transitions, emphasized the importance of this agreement to ensure a smooth transition. “That needs to be signed for interaction with federal agencies to begin. Everything is hinging on that,” Boyd explained.

Celebrating Republican Wins Earlier in the day, Trump celebrated his election victory and the projected Republican majority in the House of Representatives. Joined by Republican lawmakers and entrepreneur Elon Musk, Trump expressed enthusiasm, saying, “Isn’t it nice to win? The House did very well.” With this majority, Trump’s party is poised to control both chambers of Congress.

This meeting marked the first substantial encounter between Biden and Trump since their debate in June. In September, the two appeared alongside Vice President Kamala Harris at a memorial event in New York, commemorating the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

World Leaders React to Trump’s Victory, with Mixed Messages of Congratulations and Caution

As news broke of Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, world leaders responded with varying degrees of enthusiasm and caution. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a longtime Trump ally, celebrated early, posting on X, “The biggest comeback in U.S. political history!” Orbán had openly supported Trump’s campaign and was quick to recognize his win over Vice President Kamala Harris.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also congratulated Trump, calling his return to the White House “a new beginning for America” and expressing hopes for a “strong alliance” between Israel and the United States.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, meanwhile, expressed hopes for continued U.S. support in Ukraine’s ongoing conflict. On X, Zelenskyy stated, “We look forward to a strong United States under President Trump’s decisive leadership. We rely on continued strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States.” However, Ukraine’s future aid from the U.S. remains uncertain, as Trump has promised to “stop wars,” and Republican lawmakers have recently delayed aid packages to Ukraine.

The reaction from international leaders showed a clear divide. Right-wing leaders like Argentina’s Javier Milei, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, and El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele quickly voiced their approval. Even Brazil’s left-leaning President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva offered congratulations, noting, “Democracy is the voice of the people and must always be respected.”

China’s foreign ministry issued a neutral response, stating, “We respect the choice of the American people” and that Beijing will continue to pursue “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation” in U.S.-China relations.

In Europe, there were mixed signals. French President Emmanuel Macron posted in English that he is “ready to work together” with Trump, but also spoke with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, expressing a shared commitment to “a more united, stronger, and more sovereign Europe” in light of the election outcome.
