The United Nations has lowered its forecast for global economic growth in 2026, citing escalating energy market disruptions tied to the Middle East conflict and renewed inflationary pressure across major economies.

According to the U.N.’s midyear World Economic Situation and Prospects update, global GDP growth is now expected to reach 2.5% in 2026, down from the 2.7% forecast issued in January. U.N. economists warned that growth could weaken further to 2.1% under a more severe scenario tied to prolonged energy supply disruptions and higher commodity prices.

The downgrade reflects mounting economic fallout after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical transit route for roughly one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments. Analysts said the resulting surge in crude and fuel prices has intensified risks for inflation, trade flows and industrial production worldwide.

Energy shock reshapes global outlook

U.N. officials said higher energy and transport costs are reversing part of the global disinflation trend that had emerged earlier this year.

Global inflation is now projected to reach 3.9% in 2026, up from the January estimate and above 2025 levels. Developing economies are expected to absorb the largest impact, with inflation forecast to accelerate to 5.2% as fuel and import costs rise, according to the U.N. report.

Shantanu Mukherjee, director of economic analysis at the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said rising refinery and transport costs are becoming a major drag on commercial activity and household purchasing power. The U.N. nonetheless said the global economy is not currently approaching recession conditions.

The International Monetary Fund has also warned that prolonged disruption in Gulf energy markets could significantly weaken global output. IMF economists previously projected that a severe energy scenario could push world growth closer to 2% while forcing central banks to maintain tighter monetary policy for longer.

Europe and West Asia face sharpest slowdown

The U.N. expects West Asia to experience the largest regional deterioration as infrastructure damage, weaker tourism activity and disrupted oil production weigh on economic performance.

Economic growth across the region is projected to slow sharply to 1.4% in 2026 from 3.6% last year, according to the report. Europe is also expected to face elevated pressure because of its reliance on imported energy supplies. The European Union’s growth rate is forecast to ease to 1.1%, while the United Kingdom is projected to expand by just 0.7% this year.

By comparison, the United States is expected to remain relatively resilient, with growth forecast at 2%. China’s diversified energy sourcing and strategic reserves are expected to cushion part of the energy shock, though its growth rate is still projected to slow to 4.6% from 5% in 2025. India is forecast to remain among the fastest-growing major economies with 6.4% growth this year.

Commodity markets and trade flows under pressure

The revised forecast comes as oil market volatility continues to spread through shipping, manufacturing and agricultural supply chains.

The International Energy Agency recently warned that global oil supply could fall below demand this year because of production outages and restricted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. OPEC has also reduced its 2026 global oil demand growth outlook as higher fuel prices weaken consumption and industrial activity.

Economists said sustained energy price increases could further slow trade activity, tighten financial conditions and raise borrowing costs for heavily indebted developing economies.

The U.N. warned that weaker investment flows, elevated geopolitical uncertainty and persistent inflation risks may continue to weigh on the global economy through 2027 unless energy markets stabilize and supply routes normalize.

At least 17 Sudanese migrants have died after a boat capsized off the eastern coast of Libya, underscoring a deepening humanitarian crisis in the central Mediterranean as migration attempts surge despite mounting risks.

The vessel, carrying 33 people, overturned near the coastal city of Tobruk while en route to Greece, leaving only seven survivors and nine others still missing, according to the United Nations. The incident is the latest in a series of fatal crossings that have intensified international concern over migrant safety and the effectiveness of regional response efforts.

Officials from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said survivors had been stranded at sea for several days before rescue, with some migrants reportedly dying from hunger and dehydration during the ordeal. Rescue operations were conducted by Libyan naval forces, the coast guard, and the Red Crescent, which recovered bodies from the water.

Humanitarian Emergency Intensifies Along Libya Route

The latest tragedy reflects a sharp escalation in migrant deaths along one of the world’s most dangerous sea crossings. The central Mediterranean route, linking North Africa to southern Europe, has seen a significant rise in fatalities this year.

According to UN data cited by The Associated Press, more than 765 migrants have died along the route in 2026 alone, marking a roughly 150% increase compared with the same period last year.

Analysts say the increase is driven by a combination of conflict, economic hardship, and expanding smuggling networks, particularly affecting migrants from countries such as Sudan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The deteriorating situation in Sudan has been identified as a key factor pushing more people toward dangerous migration routes.

Regional Instability Fuels Migration Pressures

Libya continues to serve as a major transit hub for migrants attempting to reach Europe, despite ongoing instability since the 2011 uprising that toppled longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi. Weak state control and fragmented governance have allowed trafficking networks to operate with limited oversight.

Humanitarian organizations warn that migrants passing through Libya face severe risks even before reaching the sea, including detention, exploitation, and violence. These conditions, combined with unsafe vessels and limited rescue capacity, contribute to high fatality rates during crossings.

Recent incidents, including another shipwreck earlier in April that left more than 80 migrants missing, highlight the persistent dangers facing those attempting the journey.

International Response Under Strain

The growing number of fatalities has intensified calls for coordinated international action, particularly from European governments and UN agencies. However, divisions over migration policy and border enforcement continue to complicate efforts to establish a unified response.

Officials and analysts interviewed by Reuters note that while rescue operations remain active, they are increasingly stretched by the scale of migration attempts and the frequency of maritime emergencies.

Humanitarian groups have urged expanded search-and-rescue missions, improved legal migration pathways, and stronger action against trafficking networks to prevent further loss of life.

Strategic Outlook for Migration Policy

The latest shipwreck highlights the persistent gap between migration pressures and existing policy frameworks in Europe and North Africa. As conflicts and economic crises continue to drive displacement, experts warn that fatalities are likely to remain high without systemic changes.

The central Mediterranean is now experiencing one of its deadliest periods in over a decade, raising urgent questions about the sustainability of current approaches to migration management.

With crossings expected to continue in the coming months, the international community faces increasing pressure to address both the immediate humanitarian crisis and its underlying causes—before further tragedies unfold at sea.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has left its capital, Khartoum, littered with unexploded mines and munitions, creating a growing Sudan landmine crisis that is endangering civilians—particularly children—as they return to devastated neighborhoods. The contamination of urban areas with hidden explosives is emerging as a major humanitarian and security challenge with implications for post-conflict recovery and international aid efforts.

Civilian Casualties Highlight Escalating Humanitarian Emergency

Unexploded ordnance—including land mines, rockets, grenades, and shells—has caused hundreds of casualties since the war began in 2023. According to reporting from The Associated Press, nearly 60 people were killed or injured in Khartoum state in 2025 alone, with more than half of the victims children; in early 2026, 21 of 23 recorded casualties were also children.

The dangers are compounded by a lack of awareness among returning residents, many of whom are unfamiliar with identifying explosive remnants. Survivors interviewed described life-altering injuries and psychological trauma, underscoring the long-term human cost of the conflict beyond active fighting.

Urban Contamination Expands as Conflict Reaches Capital

The scale of contamination is significant, with areas equivalent to thousands of football fields affected nationwide, much of it linked to recent fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. Both sides have been accused by aid groups of deploying mines during battles for control of Khartoum, further complicating recovery efforts.

Large parts of the capital remain scarred by conflict, with abandoned buildings and public spaces hiding explosive hazards. In some locations, demining teams have discovered hundreds of devices in single sites, including parks and residential zones, highlighting the widespread nature of the threat.

Demining Efforts Struggle Amid Resource Constraints

Efforts to clear explosives are underway but face severe limitations. United Nations-supported teams and local organizations have cleared millions of square meters of land and removed tens of thousands of devices, yet progress remains slow due to the painstaking nature of demining operations.

Specialists typically clear only small sections of land each day, meaning full removal could take years. Funding shortages and limited personnel further restrict the scale of operations, raising concerns about prolonged risks for civilians attempting to rebuild their lives.

Fear and Limited Awareness Hamper Risk Mitigation

Authorities have begun public awareness campaigns through mosques, schools, and media channels, but these efforts only started in late 2024 and have yet to reach all communities. Some residents remain hesitant to report unexploded ordnance, fearing questioning or reprisals from security forces in areas recently retaken by the army.

Human rights observers note that such dynamics complicate coordination between civilians and authorities, increasing the likelihood of accidents. The lack of widespread education on explosive risks continues to expose vulnerable populations, particularly children, to danger.

Strategic and Humanitarian Stakes Intensify

The proliferation of unexploded weapons in Khartoum adds a new dimension to Sudan’s broader humanitarian crisis, already described as one of the world’s most severe. As displaced populations return, the presence of hidden explosives threatens to undermine reconstruction, delay economic recovery, and strain international aid systems.

Experts warn that without sustained international support and expanded demining capacity, the Sudan landmine crisis could persist long after active hostilities decline, embedding long-term instability in urban and rural communities alike.

Conclusion

As Sudan’s conflict continues, the growing threat of unexploded mines and weapons in Khartoum underscores the enduring dangers facing civilians beyond the battlefield. The effectiveness of clearance efforts and international support will be critical in determining whether the capital can safely transition from warzone to recovery.

ISLAMABAD (JN) – Pakistan and Afghanistan exchanged air and ground strikes overnight, sharply escalating tensions along their shared frontier and prompting Pakistan’s defense minister to declare the situation an “open war.” The latest violence follows months of deteriorating relations between Islamabad and Kabul, marked by border clashes, competing casualty claims and failed mediation efforts.

The renewed fighting underscores the fragility of regional diplomacy in South and Central Asia, where militant activity, refugee movements and rival geopolitical alignments intersect. While both governments insist they are acting in self-defense, the scale and intensity of the latest operations have heightened concerns of broader instability.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif said on social media that Islamabad’s “patience has now run out,” framing the confrontation as a direct response to Afghan military action. Afghan officials, for their part, described their initial strikes as retaliation for earlier Pakistani air operations in border areas that they say killed civilians.

Cross-border strikes and conflicting casualty claims

Afghanistan said it launched attacks on Pakistani military targets late Thursday in response to Pakistani airstrikes days earlier in Afghan border provinces. Pakistan then carried out further airstrikes early Friday, including in Kabul and other provinces, saying it targeted military installations.

Zabiullah Mujahid, spokesman for Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government, said the Afghan action was intended as a warning to Pakistan, accusing Islamabad of refusing dialogue. He rejected Pakistani casualty figures as inflated.

Pakistan’s military spokesperson, Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, said air and ground operations had killed at least 274 Afghan forces and affiliated militants and wounded more than 400. He reported 12 Pakistani soldiers killed and 27 wounded, with one missing. Afghan officials disputed those numbers, saying far fewer Afghan personnel were killed and alleging higher Pakistani losses, including captured soldiers.

Later Friday, Afghan authorities said 19 civilians were killed and 26 injured in Pakistani strikes on Khost and Paktika provinces, accusing Islamabad of deliberately targeting residential areas. Pakistan has not confirmed those civilian casualty figures. The competing claims could not be independently verified.

Pakistan’s air force also struck targets in Laghman province, according to two senior Pakistani security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. They said an arms depot and two military installations were destroyed.

Separately, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said anti-drone systems intercepted several small drones over the northwestern cities of Abbottabad, Swabi and Nowshera. He described the incident as a failed attack by the Pakistani Taliban and alleged links between militants and the Afghan Taliban government. Kabul has repeatedly denied providing sanctuary to anti-Pakistan groups.

Deepening mistrust and militant accusations

Tensions between the neighbors have been high for months. Border clashes in October left dozens of soldiers and civilians dead, prompting Qatar-mediated talks that produced a temporary ceasefire. Subsequent negotiations in Turkey failed to secure a lasting agreement.

Islamabad accuses Afghanistan’s Taliban government of harboring militant groups, including the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has intensified attacks inside Pakistan. The TTP, though separate from Afghanistan’s Taliban, is considered closely aligned. Both Kabul and the TTP deny operating from Afghan territory with official backing.

Asif also accused Afghanistan of aligning more closely with India, Pakistan’s longtime regional rival. Relations between Pakistan and India have been strained since independence in 1947, and Islamabad has previously accused New Delhi of supporting insurgent groups in Pakistan — claims India denies.

Afghan officials say Pakistan’s internal security challenges are longstanding and should not be attributed to Kabul. Mujahid described Pakistan’s conflict with the TTP as a domestic issue that predates the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, following the withdrawal of NATO forces.

International mediation efforts intensify

Diplomatic channels have been activated as fighting intensifies. Qatar’s Minister of State Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi held separate calls with the foreign ministers of both countries in an effort to de-escalate tensions, according to Qatar’s Foreign Ministry.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also spoke separately with counterparts in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. In October, Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia helped facilitate talks between the two sides.

In a statement, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres urged both governments to exercise maximum restraint and resolve differences through diplomacy while protecting civilians. Russia called for an immediate halt to hostilities, with Russian envoy Zamir Kabulov saying Moscow would consider mediating if requested. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi similarly encouraged dialogue during the holy month of Ramadan and offered Tehran’s assistance.

Despite the strong rhetoric, Afghan officials said they remain open to negotiations. Mujahid reiterated Kabul’s preference for a peaceful solution, though he insisted Afghanistan would respond to further attacks.

Refugees and regional fallout

The renewed fighting comes against the backdrop of large-scale population movements. Pakistani authorities said dozens of Afghan refugees near the Torkham border crossing had been relocated to safer areas.

Since October 2023, Pakistan has implemented a crackdown on undocumented migrants, leading to the return of millions of Afghans. Many had lived in Pakistan for decades, building businesses and families. According to the U.N. refugee agency, 2.9 million people returned to Afghanistan in 2025, including nearly 80,000 so far this year.

The security crisis adds to Afghanistan’s economic and humanitarian challenges, as well as Pakistan’s own domestic pressures from militant violence and political strain.

A volatile moment

The declaration of “open war” marks one of the most serious breakdowns in relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan in recent years. While past clashes have flared and subsided, the scale of the latest strikes and the sharp language from senior officials suggest a dangerous moment.

International actors appear keen to prevent further escalation. Whether mediation efforts can restore calm may depend on both sides’ willingness to separate immediate security grievances from broader political mistrust that has defined their relationship for decades.

KABUL, Afghanistan (Journos News) – The fragile ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan appeared increasingly strained Friday after Pakistan launched airstrikes in Kabul and two other Afghan provinces, hours after Afghan forces carried out cross-border attacks into Pakistani territory.

The renewed fighting marks one of the most serious escalations in months between the neighboring countries, whose 2,611-kilometer frontier — known as the Durand Line — remains a source of longstanding dispute. Both governments accuse the other of provocation, while casualty figures differ sharply, underscoring the difficulty of independently verifying events on the ground.

Afghanistan’s government said explosions were heard in the capital early Friday, along with reported strikes in Kandahar and Paktia provinces. Pakistani officials confirmed military action but described it as a response to what they called unprovoked Afghan attacks late Thursday.

Airstrikes reported in Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia

Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said at least three explosions were heard in Kabul. There was no immediate confirmation of the exact locations or casualties in the capital.

Two senior Pakistani security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media, told The Associated Press that Pakistan’s military targeted Afghan military facilities in Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia. They alleged that two brigade bases were destroyed but did not provide casualty figures.

The escalation followed Afghan cross-border operations late Thursday that Kabul described as retaliation for Pakistani airstrikes earlier in the week. Afghan authorities claimed their forces had captured more than a dozen Pakistani army posts along the border.

Islamabad rejected those claims. Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the Afghan attack was unprovoked and denied that any army positions had been seized.

The conflicting accounts reflect the deep mistrust that has characterized relations between the two sides, particularly over security issues linked to militant groups operating near the frontier.

Afghan strikes described as retaliation

In a statement posted on X, Mujahid said Afghan forces had launched “large-scale offensive operations” against Pakistani military bases and installations along the Durand Line. Afghanistan has never formally recognized the border drawn during British colonial rule.

Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry said operations occurred across six border provinces and lasted roughly four hours before ending around midnight. It claimed 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed and several others captured, while eight Afghan personnel were killed and 11 wounded.

Pakistan presented far lower figures. Tarar said two Pakistani soldiers were killed and three wounded, and that 36 Afghan fighters had died. Mosharraf Ali Zaidi, spokesperson for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, later posted that at least 133 Afghan fighters were killed and more than 200 wounded, and denied any Pakistani soldiers had been captured.

Such wide discrepancies are common in cross-border clashes where independent access is limited. No third-party verification of the casualty claims was immediately available.

Refugee camp and border communities affected

Both sides reported exchanges of fire near the Torkham border crossing, one of the busiest transit points between the two countries.

Afghan officials said a missile strike wounded 13 civilians at a refugee camp near Torkham, including women and children. Authorities began evacuating the camp after several refugees were injured, according to local officials.

On the Pakistani side, police said residents in nearby villages were relocating to safer areas. Some Afghan refugees waiting to cross back into Afghanistan were also moved. Pakistan has been carrying out a large-scale migrant crackdown since October 2023, expelling hundreds of thousands of Afghans.

Pakistani police said mortars fired from Afghanistan landed in nearby villages but reported no civilian casualties.

The United Nations called for restraint. A spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said he urged both sides to protect civilians under international law and to resolve differences through diplomacy.

Months of mounting tension

The latest violence follows months of heightened friction along the border. Deadly clashes in October killed dozens of soldiers, civilians and suspected militants. Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of failing to curb militant activity, particularly by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which Islamabad says operates from Afghan territory.

The TTP is distinct from Afghanistan’s Taliban government but is widely seen as closely aligned with it. Kabul has denied that the group uses Afghan soil to stage attacks in Pakistan.

Earlier this week, Pakistan conducted strikes along the border, saying it killed at least 70 militants. Afghan authorities rejected that claim, saying the attacks hit civilian areas, including homes and a religious school, and killed dozens of civilians. Kabul described those strikes as violations of its sovereignty.

A ceasefire brokered by Qatar had largely reduced hostilities in recent months, though sporadic exchanges of fire continued. Several rounds of talks in November failed to produce a formal peace agreement.

The renewed strikes in Kabul and along the border suggest that the ceasefire framework is under significant strain. For residents on both sides of the Durand Line, the immediate concern remains safety, as communities brace for the possibility of further escalation.

With sharply differing casualty claims and rising rhetoric from both capitals, diplomatic efforts may face renewed urgency in the days ahead.

The United States has called on Thailand and Cambodia to cease hostilities immediately as fighting along their disputed border entered a third day, leaving at least 10 people dead and forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes. The appeal comes amid widening violence that both sides say was triggered by the other, underscoring how fragile recent ceasefire efforts have been.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged the two Southeast Asian neighbors to adhere to de-escalation measures outlined in a peace accord brokered in October by President Donald Trump. Washington’s intervention highlights concern that renewed clashes could destabilize a region critical to trade and security.

The latest flare-up marks the most serious escalation since fighting in July killed dozens of soldiers and civilians. Despite previous agreements aimed at calming tensions, artillery exchanges and air strikes have resumed across multiple provinces on both sides of the frontier.

Civilian toll rises as evacuations expand

Officials say the death toll over three days stands at 10, including seven people in Cambodia and three in Thailand. Thai authorities reported evacuating more than 400,000 residents from affected areas, while Cambodia said around 100,000 people have been moved to shelters.

Thailand’s defence ministry described its military response as “limited in scope” and undertaken as a last resort. A ministry spokesperson said security operations were intended to safeguard civilians, adding that peace must ensure the safety of Thai citizens.

Cambodian officials, however, accused Thailand of launching “aggressive military attacks” that struck civilian institutions and cultural sites, including historic temples located near contested territory. The exchange of accusations reflects the deep mistrust that continues to shadow diplomatic efforts.

The scale of displacement has raised concerns about humanitarian needs, particularly in rural border communities where access to shelter, food and medical care can be limited. Aid groups have yet to publish comprehensive assessments, but local authorities on both sides have opened temporary facilities for evacuees.

Diplomatic pressure builds

US President Trump said he would consider making a phone call to help stop the fighting, referencing the earlier peace framework that Washington helped facilitate. In October, Trump described the accord as a significant diplomatic achievement after months of intermittent violence.

The July clashes that preceded the agreement were triggered by a Cambodian rocket barrage into Thai territory, followed by Thai air strikes. Five days of intense combat left dozens dead before mediation efforts gained traction. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim played a key role in brokering an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” alongside US involvement.

Although the October agreement was intended to stabilize the border, tensions have persisted. Analysts note that long-standing territorial claims and nationalist sentiment on both sides have complicated implementation of ceasefire commitments.

On Wednesday, Cambodia announced it would withdraw from the Southeast Asian Games being hosted in Thailand. The Cambodian National Olympic Committee cited serious concerns raised by athletes’ families, saying the decision was not taken lightly. The move underscores how the violence is spilling into cultural and sporting ties that typically help maintain regional goodwill.

UN calls for restraint

UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged both governments to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation. He said the renewed fighting had resulted in significant civilian casualties, infrastructure damage and displacement.

The conflict has expanded into at least six provinces in northeastern Thailand and five provinces in northern and northwestern Cambodia. Several countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan, have issued travel advisories warning citizens against visiting affected border areas.

The dispute traces back more than a century, to the demarcation of borders following the French colonial administration of Cambodia. Competing interpretations of historical maps and sovereignty over temple complexes and surrounding land have fueled periodic confrontations, most notably around the Preah Vihear area in previous decades.

While large-scale warfare between the two nations is unlikely, even limited engagements can have serious consequences for border populations. The current crisis illustrates how unresolved historical grievances can quickly reignite despite formal agreements.

For now, diplomatic efforts appear focused on restoring adherence to the October ceasefire and preventing further civilian harm. Whether renewed mediation — potentially involving regional partners or Washington — can secure a durable calm remains uncertain.

As artillery exchanges continue, the immediate priority for both governments is containing violence and addressing humanitarian needs. The coming days will test the durability of last year’s peace framework and the willingness of both sides to step back from confrontation.

The IOM reported that civilians fled from several towns and villages near Bara in North Kordofan province between Friday and Sunday, amid escalating clashes between the Sudanese army and the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

North Kordofan and the neighboring Darfur region have become the latest epicenters of Sudan’s war, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions since it erupted in April 2023.

Escalating Violence and Mass Displacement

The IOM said that nearly 39,000 people have fled from multiple towns in North Kordofan since October 26, following a series of RSF attacks. Most displaced residents are heading toward Khartoum, Omdurman, and Sheikan, seeking safety despite ongoing instability in those areas.

The violence in Kordofan follows the RSF’s capture of el-Fasher, the last major city in Darfur not under its control. The takeover left hundreds dead and forced tens of thousands to flee to overcrowded camps amid reports of mass atrocities, according to aid groups and U.N. officials.

The World Health Organization estimates that at least 40,000 people have been killed and 12 million displaced since the conflict began, though humanitarian groups warn the real toll could be far higher.

Mass Killings and Cover-Ups in Darfur

In Darfur, reports of war crimes continue to mount. The Sudan Doctors Network said Sunday that RSF fighters collected hundreds of bodies from the streets of el-Fasher, burying some in mass graves and burning others in what the group described as an effort to conceal evidence of atrocities.

Satellite images analyzed by Vantor, a Colorado-based firm, appear to confirm these reports. Images taken last week showed fires burning near the Saudi Hospital in el-Fasher, close to what analysts identified as a cluster of possible human remains.

Researchers at the Yale School of Public Health’s Humanitarian Research Lab said the images likely depict “the burning of objects that may be consistent with bodies.”

Attacks Spread to West Kordofan

Meanwhile, the RSF claimed Monday that its fighters had entered Babanusa, a strategic town in West Kordofan province, and were advancing toward the army’s regional headquarters.

Local volunteer Salah Semsaya, part of the Emergency Response Rooms network, told the Associated Press that aid kitchens in Babanusa had seen a sharp decline in families seeking food, suggesting many residents have fled. However, official displacement figures have not been confirmed.

A Nation in Collapse

Sudan’s war began after tensions erupted between Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, head of the army, and Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), commander of the RSF — former allies who jointly seized power in a 2021 coup.

Their power struggle has since plunged Sudan into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, leaving large parts of the country without functioning government institutions, food supplies, or medical services.

Despite repeated calls from the United Nations, African Union, and regional mediators for a cease-fire, both sides continue to fight for territorial control, especially over resource-rich and strategic regions such as Darfur and Kordofan.

Israel says its forces came under attack from Hamas militants in southern Gaza, marking the first major test of the ceasefire agreed earlier this month. The confrontation in Rafah has sparked concern that the fragile truce could unravel just days after it took effect.

Israeli Forces Report Attack in Rafah

Israeli officials said Sunday that Hamas fighters launched rocket-propelled grenades and sniper fire at Israeli troops in Rafah, southern Gaza, prompting retaliatory airstrikes in the area. The incident occurred nine days into the U.S.-brokered ceasefire aimed at halting nearly two years of war.

According to a senior Israeli military source, several soldiers were injured in the assault, which took place beyond the so-called Yellow Line, the boundary marking the initial Israeli withdrawal under the ceasefire agreement.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an emergency security meeting with Defense Minister Israel Katz and senior military commanders following the incident. Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, a far-right member of the cabinet, urged Netanyahu to “resume the war in Gaza in full force.”

Hamas Denies Ceasefire Breach

Hamas has not officially confirmed or denied involvement in the Rafah attack. However, senior official Izzat al-Rishq said on Telegram that the group remains committed to the ceasefire and accused Israel of “fabricating weak pretexts to justify its crimes.”

The militant group claimed its internal Rada’a security forces were operating nearby to target what it described as a “hideout” of a militia led by Yasser Abu Shabab, reportedly armed and supported by Israel.

In June, Israeli officials acknowledged providing weapons and logistical support to several such Gaza-based militias in an effort to counter Hamas’s influence in the territory.

Analysts Warn of Volatile Situation

Analysts say the latest confrontation highlights the precarious nature of the ceasefire and the deep divisions within Gaza.

Muhammad Shehada, a Gaza analyst with the European Council on Foreign Relations, said these Israel-backed militias operate from within zones under Israeli control. “They descend into other areas of Gaza, carry out attacks, and retreat to protected zones,” Shehada explained.

He added that such tactics blur the lines of responsibility and make it difficult to assess who is violating the truce.

Ceasefire Strained by Internal Gaza Clashes

Since the ceasefire took effect, Hamas has intensified what it calls a “security campaign” targeting collaborators, mercenaries, and rival factions across Gaza. The campaign has triggered several violent confrontations, including a widely condemned public execution of eight people in Gaza City, witnessed by large crowds.

The clashes between Hamas and local groups have deepened instability in the enclave, already devastated by months of warfare.

Mutual Accusations of Violations

Both sides have accused each other of undermining the ceasefire.

Israel has reported several incidents involving Palestinians approaching the Yellow Line, claiming they posed a security threat. Hamas labeled these shootings a “flagrant violation” of the truce.

Meanwhile, Israel has accused Hamas of failing to fulfill its obligations under the ceasefire agreement, including the return of the bodies of deceased hostages. As a result, Israel temporarily closed a key border crossing used for humanitarian aid and trade.

Diplomatic Pressure to Maintain Truce

The United States and Egypt, key mediators in the ceasefire deal, have urged both sides to exercise restraint. Washington has called the Rafah exchange a “serious concern” and warned that renewed hostilities would “set back humanitarian relief efforts and regional stability.”

Egyptian officials, speaking anonymously to local media, said they are “working intensively” with both parties to de-escalate tensions and prevent the ceasefire from collapsing.

The Stakes for Gaza and Israel

The ceasefire, brokered after months of negotiations, was intended to halt hostilities that began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 67,600 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began. The ministry, part of the Hamas-run administration, does not distinguish between civilian and militant casualties, but its data is generally regarded as credible by the United Nations and independent humanitarian groups.

Analysts say that a breakdown in the ceasefire could reignite widespread fighting, derail hostage recovery efforts, and further strain Israel’s relations with its international allies.

Outlook: A Fragile Peace Under Threat

While Sunday’s clash does not yet signal a full-scale return to war, it underscores how fragile the ceasefire remains amid deep mistrust and competing security claims.

For Gaza’s civilians, the resumption of airstrikes and internal violence raises fears that the promised period of calm may once again give way to chaos.

Israel’s government has vowed to respond “proportionally” to any attacks, while Hamas insists it is upholding the agreement. With neither side willing to appear weak, the coming days will determine whether this truce endures—or collapses under the weight of mutual suspicion.

Israel and Gaza Mark Two Years Since War as Peace Talks Resume in Egypt

Published: October 7, 2025, 22:15 EDT

Israel and the Palestinian territories marked two years since Hamas’ October 7, 2023 assault triggered one of the deadliest and most consequential wars in the region’s history. As mourners gathered across southern Israel and displaced families sought safety in Gaza, indirect talks between Israel and Hamas resumed in Egypt under a U.S.-backed peace plan aiming to secure a lasting ceasefire and the release of remaining hostages.

Israelis Gather to Remember the Victims

Thousands gathered across southern Israel on Tuesday to mourn victims of the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks, which killed around 1,200 people and left deep scars across the nation. The main memorial, organized by bereaved families, took place near the border communities hit hardest during the assault.

At the site of the Nova music festival in Reim, where nearly 400 people were killed and dozens abducted, attendees held a moment of silence at 6:29 a.m. — the precise time militants stormed the grounds. Photos of victims surrounded the former dance floor as survivors recounted the chaos of that morning.

Israel’s government plans a separate ceremony next week, in line with the Hebrew calendar. The division reflects growing discontent with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war and hostage crisis. Many relatives accuse the government of failing to secure a long-term ceasefire that could bring home the remaining captives.

Gaza Endures Another Offensive

In the Gaza Strip, the humanitarian toll remains severe. Israel’s ongoing military operations have devastated urban centers and displaced hundreds of thousands. Gaza’s Health Ministry, which operates under Hamas, reports more than 67,000 Palestinians killed since 2023, roughly half of them women and children. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants, but independent analysts and major rights groups view the figures as the most reliable estimate available.

Entire neighborhoods in northern Gaza have been reduced to rubble as Israeli forces press forward toward Gaza City, sparking another wave of displacement. Many residents, unable to afford the perilous journey south, remain trapped amid shortages of food, medicine, and clean water.

Israel denies accusations of genocide, asserting its operations target Hamas infrastructure and are carried out in self-defense after the October 7 attack.

Diplomatic efforts to end the war have resumed in Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. Israeli and Hamas negotiators are holding indirect discussions mediated by Egyptian and U.S. officials, focusing on implementing the first phase of a U.S.-drafted peace initiative backed by President Donald Trump.

The proposal seeks an immediate ceasefire in exchange for the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas in return for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody. According to Egyptian mediators cited by the Associated Press, both sides have agreed on most of the first-phase terms but continue to debate the timeline and conditions for Hamas’ disarmament — a central Israeli demand.

A senior Hamas official told Al Araby Television that the group would reject any foreign military administration of Gaza, calling the entry of international troops “unacceptable.” Another Hamas representative suggested the group might surrender its weapons to a future Palestinian governing body, though that stance was not included in its formal statement.

Political Divides and Global Reactions

The anniversary has rekindled debate within Israel over Netanyahu’s leadership and the long-term strategy for Gaza. Critics accuse his administration of failing to outline a viable political vision for the post-war period, while supporters argue that continued pressure on Hamas remains necessary to guarantee Israel’s security.

Internationally, leaders across Europe and the United Nations marked the anniversary with solemn statements and renewed calls for peace. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called Oct. 7 “a black day in Jewish history” and expressed shame over a resurgence of antisemitism since the attack. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described it as “the worst mass murder of Jews since the Holocaust,” while Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni said Israel’s response, though grounded in defense, had caused “too many innocent victims among Gaza’s civilian population.”

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement urging the “immediate and unconditional” release of all hostages. He condemned the suffering endured by both sides and urged leaders to “seize the opportunity to end the cycle of trauma and violence.”

Pro-Palestinian Demonstrations Around the World

In Jakarta, more than 1,000 pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched to the U.S. Embassy to protest Israel’s blockade of Gaza and demand the release of activists detained after attempting to breach the blockade by sea. Protesters waved Palestinian flags and chanted “Free, free Palestine” as police deployed in large numbers to maintain order. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, has no formal ties with Israel and has consistently voiced support for Palestinian statehood.

In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned planned pro-Palestinian protests on university campuses as “un-British,” warning against rhetoric that could incite antisemitism. His comments followed a deadly attack on a synagogue in Manchester days earlier, which heightened tensions nationwide.

The Path Ahead: Fragile Peace and Lingering Uncertainty

Despite renewed diplomatic momentum, major questions remain unresolved. The future governance of Gaza, the status of disarmament, and Israel’s proposed “security perimeter” inside the enclave all remain points of contention.

The U.S.-led plan envisions an eventual transition toward a unified Palestinian administration, but negotiators have yet to clarify how that would be implemented. Analysts warn that without a clear framework for reconstruction and political reconciliation, the cycle of violence could continue.

As families across Israel and Gaza mourn their losses, the region remains suspended between grief and hope — a fragile balance that hinges on whether this latest round of diplomacy can deliver what two years of war could not: a sustainable peace.
