WINDSOR, England – Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, has received £302,000 in compensation after surrendering the lease on Royal Lodge, the Crown Estate confirmed on October 9, bringing a long-running and closely scrutinised property arrangement to an end.

The Crown Estate said Andrew also paid £1.8 million in repair and restoration costs as the lease was handed back. The two sums are separate payments, and the available information does not establish a complete net financial outcome from the arrangement.

Andrew left the 30-room residence in Windsor Great Park in February 2026 and moved to accommodation on King Charles III’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

The Crown Estate said it would now focus on the property’s future use and seek opportunities to generate additional financial value for the nation.

Why the lease entitled him to compensation

The payment was linked to an early-surrender clause in the lease, rather than described by the Crown Estate as a discretionary grant.

Andrew requested early surrender of the lease on October 30, 2025. Under the agreement, the compensation depended on the notice period and the terms governing the return of the property.

The National Audit Office estimated in June that Andrew could be entitled to £301,967.66, provided the full 12-month notice period was served and subject to the assessment of repair and dilapidation costs. The amount confirmed by the Crown Estate on October 9 was £302,000.

The close match between the estimate and final payment is consistent with the contractual provision identified by the audit office. However, the payment alone does not establish how every repair cost or other financial obligation was calculated.

The separate £1.8 million repair bill

The Crown Estate said Andrew paid £1.8 million for repairs and restoration. That amount should not be confused with the compensation he received for surrendering the lease.

The National Audit Office had previously said the final compensation depended partly on dilapidation costs at handover. Its June report set out the potential compensation before those costs had been assessed.

The publicly reported figures therefore identify two distinct transactions: a contractual payment to Andrew and a payment by him for repair and restoration work. Without a full final accounting of the lease, including relevant prior payments and obligations, it would be premature to present their difference as the complete financial cost or benefit to the public.

Public scrutiny of Royal Lodge

The lease attracted scrutiny because Royal Lodge is managed by the Crown Estate, an independent commercial organisation that manages land and property on behalf of the nation. Its net profits are returned to HM Treasury.

A National Audit Office investigation examined residential arrangements between the Crown Estate and members of the Royal Family. It found that lease terms varied according to factors including upfront payments, refurbishment responsibilities, subletting rights and early-surrender provisions.

The report also noted that three cottages on the Royal Lodge estate had been sublet, with the resulting income payable to Andrew. The cottages had been vacant since April 2026, according to the audit office.

The Public Accounts Committee opened an inquiry into the Crown Estate’s property arrangements after seeking further information about Royal Lodge. Its scrutiny focused on how the arrangements were structured and whether the Crown Estate fulfilled its responsibilities in managing its assets.

The National Audit Office’s report was a factual review and did not itself make a value-for-money determination. The existence of the inquiry does not establish that the lease or compensation payment was improper.

What happens to Royal Lodge now

The Crown Estate said it would market Royal Lodge for a future use intended to generate additional financial value for the nation. That process will determine how the property is used after Andrew’s departure.

The financial implications will depend on the eventual arrangement, including any refurbishment or other costs, the terms under which the property is used and the income it generates.

The confirmed compensation settles one element of the lease surrender. It does not, by itself, resolve broader questions raised about the original lease terms, the financial benefits of subletting or the future value of the property.

The central accountability question is how the contractual payment, repair obligations and future use of Royal Lodge fit into the Crown Estate’s duty to manage its assets in the nation’s interest.
