Paramount and CBS Agree to Pay Trump Up to $30M in Election Lawsuit Settlement—Plus Editorial Reforms

NEW YORK — In a blockbuster media and political development, Paramount Global and CBS have agreed to a settlement potentially exceeding $30 million to resolve former President Donald Trump’s lawsuit accusing the network of election interference tied to a 2024 “60 Minutes” interview with then–Vice President Kamala Harris.

The deal includes an upfront $16 million payout to cover Trump’s legal expenses and contributions to causes such as his future presidential library or charities, according to Fox News Digital. CBS has not admitted wrongdoing, but agreed to reform its editorial standards as part of the settlement.

What’s Changing at CBS?

As part of the agreement, CBS will now release full, unedited transcripts of all future interviews with presidential candidates. Insiders are already calling this policy change the “Trump Rule.”

While CBS hasn’t conceded any journalistic fault, sources say the new policy aims to rebuild trust and transparency after months of backlash.

The Numbers: A Massive Payout

$16 million paid upfront to Trump

Additional mid–eight-figure allocation anticipated for future public service announcements and conservative-aligned messaging across CBS platforms

The total amount may surpass the $15 million ABC paid Trump last year in a separate defamation case

Paramount executives dispute the additional allocation figure, but Trump’s legal team sees the deal as a resounding victory.

“President Trump delivers another win for the American people… CBS and Paramount Global had no choice but to settle,” a spokesperson for Trump’s team said.

The Lawsuit: What Sparked the Battle

Trump’s legal complaint centered on a 2023 “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris. A preview clip on Face the Nation showed Harris fumbling through a widely mocked answer about Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu — what critics called a “word salad.” A different, more concise version of her response aired during the network’s primetime broadcast.

Trump alleged this selective editing was meant to shield Harris from criticism right before Election Day — and that it amounted to election interference. CBS maintained that both clips came from the same answer and denied any intent to mislead.

Still, the FCC got involved, forcing CBS to release the unedited transcript, which revealed both parts of Harris’ answer were cut and aired separately.

Political and Industry Fallout

Trump originally sought $20 billion in damages. And while CBS avoided that number, the network was clearly under pressure — especially with Paramount Global’s pending merger with Skydance Media in the background. There were fears that Trump’s FCC could block the deal if the lawsuit wasn’t resolved.

Not everyone inside CBS agreed with the decision to settle:

“60 Minutes” producers reportedly called the lawsuit “complete bulls—”

Longtime executive producer Bill Owens resigned in April over the dispute, citing a lack of editorial independence

CBS News President Wendy McMahon also stepped down in May, stating, “It’s time for me to move on”

Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Sanders and eight other Democratic senators had urged Paramount not to settle, calling the lawsuit an “attack on the First Amendment.”

No Apology, No Personal Payout

The settlement does not include any admission of guilt or a formal apology. No money is going directly to Trump himself—the funds are earmarked for legal and charitable use.

Paramount emphasized that the settlement is unrelated to the Skydance deal and that it is simply “abiding by the legal process.” Still, the timing suggests a strategic move to clear the decks ahead of the July 2 shareholder meeting.

Trump: “They Cheated the American People”

Trump, for his part, called the CBS segment a “fraud on the American people.” On Truth Social, he claimed Harris’ original answer was so damaging it would have “cost her many of the votes she ended up getting.”

The case, Trump argued, showed that the media had gone too far in trying to influence elections—and this time, he fought back and won.

Final Take

This is more than just a legal victory for Trump—it’s a shot across the bow for mainstream media. Whether you view it as justice or intimidation, the settlement marks a pivotal moment in the evolving relationship between politics, press freedom, and accountability in the digital age.

Trump Applauds Supreme Court for Halting ‘Colossal Abuse of Power’ by Federal Judges

Former President Donald Trump wasted no time celebrating a major legal victory on Friday after the Supreme Court sharply limited the ability of lower federal courts to block presidential policies nationwide.

Speaking at a press conference just over an hour after the ruling was handed down, Trump praised the 6–3 decision as a blow to what he called the “colossal abuse of power” by what he described as a “handful of radical left judges.” These judges, he claimed, had repeatedly stepped in to obstruct policies he was elected to implement.

“I was elected on a historic mandate,” Trump said. “But in recent months, we’ve seen rogue judges try to override the will of the American people by blocking lawful executive orders nationwide. That ends today.”

Trump accused some district judges of trying to “dictate the law for the entire nation,” rather than rule narrowly on the specific plaintiffs before them.

The Supreme Court Ruling: A Shift in Judicial Power

The Supreme Court’s decision centered on the controversial practice of universal injunctions—court orders that block federal policies from taking effect across the entire country. The ruling doesn’t weigh in on the legality of Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order, which was at the heart of the case. Instead, the justices focused strictly on whether lower courts have the authority to issue such sweeping injunctions in the first place.

Writing for the conservative majority, Justice Amy Coney Barrett made it clear that lower courts overstepped:

“The issue before us is one of remedy,” Barrett wrote. “Whether, under the Judiciary Act of 1789, federal courts have equitable authority to issue universal injunctions. A universal injunction can be justified only as an exercise of equitable authority, yet Congress has granted federal courts no such power.”

Barrett also took aim at Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s dissent, arguing that Jackson’s position “decries an imperial Executive while embracing an imperial Judiciary.”

A Heated Dissent: Fears of Presidential Overreach

Justice Jackson, one of the court’s three liberal justices, issued a sharp dissent, warning that the ruling essentially grants the president unchecked authority—at least temporarily—by making it harder for federal courts to block potentially unconstitutional policies.

“This ruling creates an existential threat to the rule of law,” Jackson wrote. “It allows a president to violate the Constitution and escape judicial scrutiny unless every affected person files a lawsuit.”

Her concerns echoed those of other liberal justices, who have long warned that restricting universal injunctions could flood the courts with thousands of individual lawsuits and delay justice for people most affected by sweeping policies.

What Sparked the Case?

The case before the court involved three lower court judges—in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington state—who had issued nationwide blocks on Trump’s birthright citizenship order, a directive that would deny U.S. citizenship to children born on American soil to undocumented immigrants.

The Trump administration appealed, arguing that those injunctions were overly broad and beyond the legal scope of district judges.

While the Supreme Court sidestepped the core issue of whether the birthright order is constitutional, it instructed the lower courts to revise their injunctions to ensure they only apply to individual plaintiffs—not the entire country.

A Major Win for Trump’s Legal Strategy

Trump and his legal team see the decision as a green light to move forward with his agenda, without being repeatedly blocked by federal judges issuing nationwide bans from single courtrooms.

The ruling could dramatically change how legal challenges to presidential policies unfold going forward—not just for Trump, but for future presidents as well.

“This Supreme Court decision defends presidential authority and stops activist judges from grinding our country to a halt,” Trump said Friday.

Donald Trump Named Time Person of the Year for the Second Time

Time Magazine has named Donald Trump its Person of the Year for 2024, marking the second time the former president has received this honor.

“For marshaling a comeback of historic proportions, for driving a once-in-a-generation political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and altering America’s role in the world, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2024 Person of the Year,” said Time Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs in a letter to readers.

The Republican president-elect is set to celebrate the recognition by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, joined by several members of his family.

Trump was first named Person of the Year in 2016 after his surprising victory in the U.S. presidential election. Time’s tradition, which began in 1927 as “Man of the Year,” honors a person or movement that has had the greatest influence on global events, for better or worse.

Past winners include climate activist Greta Thunberg, former President Barack Obama, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Pope Francis, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Editors at Time select the Person of the Year, and this year, Trump was chosen from a list of 10 finalists, which also included Vice President Kamala Harris, the Princess of Wales, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk, a close ally of Trump, is set to lead an advisory board called the Department of Government Efficiency.

In announcing Trump as the winner, Time described his 2024 victory as a “stunning political comeback.” His campaign activated new voters, including young males, helping him secure a historic win. This victory marked his first popular vote win and saw him flip every swing state red.

Trump’s 2024 win is groundbreaking in several ways. He will become the oldest president in U.S. history, and he is also the first convicted felon to be elected to the nation’s highest office. Earlier this year, Trump was convicted by a New York jury on 34 counts of fraud.

Trump spoke to Time Magazine during interviews in April 2024, where he discussed his plans for a second term, which included reforming U.S. immigration and deporting millions of people.

Though Trump initially complained in 2015 when he wasn’t named Person of the Year, despite his presidential bid, he later called it a “great honor” after his 2016 victory. At that time, he shared his admiration for Time Magazine, saying it meant a lot to him, especially as someone who grew up reading it.

Despite this recognition, Trump has continued to criticize some of Time’s other choices, including last year’s selection of pop star Taylor Swift as Person of the Year.

The Struggling Anti-Trump Movement: Is There Still Hope?

The anti-Trump movement is losing ground and struggling to stay relevant in the face of his strong resurgence within the Republican Party. Following Donald Trump’s decisive victory, he quickly consolidated power and pushed his agenda forward, leaving the resistance, particularly those who once criticized him, scrambling to regain their influence.

The so-called “Never Trump” movement, which includes former Republicans and other Trump critics, is now fragmented. While some, like former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, have tried to challenge Trump’s appointees, their efforts seem largely ineffective as Trump dominates the GOP and reshapes Washington in his own image.

Recently, Haley attacked Trump’s appointments, including figures like Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., on her radio show, labeling them as unqualified for their positions. Former Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock also criticized Trump’s Cabinet choices, calling them dangerous. Meanwhile, former Vice President Mike Pence has expressed concerns about Kennedy, particularly regarding his views on abortion, attempting to rally anti-abortion conservatives against him. However, these voices of opposition have little impact as Trump’s grip on the Republican Party tightens.

Trump’s win and his swift consolidation of power have sidelined many of his critics, particularly those who once opposed him from within the party. Figures like Haley and Pence, who still find common ground with Trump on some issues, hold onto the hope that they can influence the GOP. But for many others who were part of the original Never Trump faction, the idea of reforming the Republican Party is no longer viable. Joe Walsh, a former GOP congressman and Trump critic, believes that Trump’s reelection has made the idea of forming a new party unrealistic, with few remaining options for critics—either continue to challenge his policies from the sidelines or shift toward the Democratic Party.

Despite this, Trump’s critics are attempting to remain relevant by targeting his cabinet picks and trying to maintain their political influence. Haley, for example, voiced her concerns about Gabbard and Kennedy on her radio show, criticizing their foreign policy views and lack of qualifications for their posts. However, Trump’s camp is less concerned with such opposition, with figures like Mike Davis, a former Senate GOP aide, dismissing their criticism as irrelevant.

Trump’s opponents are increasingly looking to Congress to act as a check on his power. Early signs of resistance, like Senate Republicans selecting John Thune over Rick Scott for majority leader despite Trump’s backing of Scott, offer some hope. But as Trump prepares to resume office in January, congressional Republicans may be less inclined to defy him. Public opposition risks angering Trump’s base and inviting primary challenges, making it difficult for senators to oppose him without political consequences.

The remaining anti-Trump voices in the Senate—such as Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski—are unlikely to be enough to stop Trump’s nominations. The GOP’s increasing alignment with Trump means that the last pockets of resistance, particularly in Congress, may eventually fade, leaving little room for opposition to his agenda. For the broader Trump resistance, the question remains: can they hold the line, or will they be swept aside as Trump reasserts his dominance over the party?

Although Republicans secured control, their majority is thin, with Speaker Mike Johnson able to lose only a few GOP votes on any legislation. House Democrats, who significantly outpaced their Republican counterparts in fundraising, could play a crucial role in shaping major votes. Trump’s influence did not fully extend down the ballot, leaving GOP congressional candidates underperforming and narrowing the Republican margin in the House.

Key Legislative Goals and Potential Challenges

With a unified government, House Republicans are expected to pursue high-priority policies, such as extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts and increasing American energy production. However, when it comes to essential duties like funding the government and raising the federal debt ceiling, House Republicans may struggle to gather enough votes within their own ranks—an issue they faced repeatedly in the current Congress, where Democrats often stepped in to prevent legislative gridlock.

Democratic Influence on Critical Votes

Trump’s presence may unify Republicans, but it’s likely that the GOP will still need Democratic support to keep the government running and avoid a debt default. Democrats are expected to use this position strategically, asking for concessions in return for their votes on essential measures.

The Challenge of a Slim Majority

While Trump has momentum and a clear mandate, the slim GOP majority in the House could curb the party’s plans. Despite their unified control, Republicans may face obstacles that humble them, as they work to balance party goals with the realities of a narrow margin. This may place Democrats in a surprisingly influential role over the next legislative term.

Asian stock markets showed signs of recovery on Thursday, bouncing back from early losses as U.S. stocks hit record highs following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election. Investors are now turning their attention to the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision, set to be announced later in the day.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index fell 0.4%, settling at 39,339.74, amid concerns over potential trade tensions under a Trump administration. Neil Newman, head of strategy for Astris Advisory Japan, pointed out that Trump’s tariff policies could lead to uncertainties.

Meanwhile, in Seoul, South Korea’s Kospi index rebounded by 0.5%, closing at 2,576.30. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 also gained 0.1%, reaching 8,204.80.

Chinese markets saw notable gains. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose by 0.9% to 20,729.01, and the Shanghai Composite increased by 0.9%, reaching 3,413.47. A key factor behind the Chinese market’s strength was a report showing a 13% year-over-year increase in exports for October, marking the fastest growth in over two years.

Trump has pledged to implement tariffs of up to 60% on Chinese imports, a move that could further strain the Chinese economy, which is already grappling with slowing growth. This uncertainty about higher tariffs and Trump’s tax and regulation policies is influencing market sentiment.

Zichun Huang of Capital Economics suggested that while the impact of tariffs may not be immediate, there is still a risk of escalating trade tensions. However, he added that Chinese shipments might remain strong in the short term, despite any potential drag from Trump’s policies.

In the U.S., stocks surged on Wednesday. The S&P 500 soared 2.5% to 5,929.04, marking its best day in nearly two years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 3.6% to 43,729.93, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 3%, reaching 18,983.47. All three indices hit fresh record highs.

The long-term effects of Trump’s second term on the U.S. economy will depend largely on whether Republicans gain control of Congress, a development that is still uncertain. Investors are betting that Trump’s policies could stimulate economic growth, which could result in higher bond yields. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury bond rose to 4.43%, up from 4.29% the previous day.

Trump’s pro-business policies, including tax cuts and deregulation, could lead to faster economic growth, but they might also contribute to higher inflation and costs for U.S. households. Trade tensions and restrictions on immigration could add to inflationary pressures, as businesses may raise wages to address labor shortages.

Wall Street’s recent rally has been fueled by expectations of interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve, as inflation has moderated. However, with the economy showing signs of strength, traders are now revising their expectations for how many rate cuts the Fed will make next year.

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to announce an interest rate cut on Thursday, although traders have begun adjusting their expectations for the number of cuts throughout 2024.

In other markets, the U.S. dollar weakened slightly against the Japanese yen, falling to 154.46 from 154.62. The euro rose to $1.0740 from $1.0730.

Crude oil prices were up, with U.S. benchmark crude increasing by 45 cents to $72.14 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, was up 55 cents, reaching $75.47.

Bitcoin saw a slight decline, dropping to $75,780 after hitting an all-time high above $76,480 on Wednesday. Trump has expressed plans to make the U.S. the “crypto capital of the planet,” promising to create a “strategic reserve” of bitcoin.

As markets adjust to Trump’s victory and look ahead to the Fed’s decision, the path forward remains uncertain, with many factors—domestic and international—set to influence global economies in the months to come.

Asian shares regained momentum on Thursday after early losses, as investors focused on how Donald Trump’s victory might influence the economy and global markets. Attention is also turning to the Federal Reserve’s upcoming decision on interest rates.

Stocks in Asia bounced back following a strong performance in U.S. markets, driven by optimism around Trump’s return to office. As global investors assess Trump’s economic policies, all eyes are also on the Federal Reserve’s interest rate announcement.

After early market dips, Asian shares recovered as Trump’s win spurred hopes of stronger economic growth. Investors are now looking ahead to the Fed’s rate decision, with expectations that it could influence market trends.

Stocks in Asia saw a boost after Trump’s victory, with optimism around his economic policies and potential tariffs. As investors digest these factors, the Federal Reserve’s decision on interest rates remains a key focus for markets.

In the wake of Trump’s win, Asian markets rallied as investors placed their bets on how his presidency might impact the global economy. Now, market attention shifts to the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision later in the day.
